The McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre, will be home

to four horses year-round. The exhibit will include
a barn, carriage shed, paddocks, and pastures.
Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy wagon
rides in summer and sleigh rides in winter.
Starting next year, the Zoo plans to bring in a
mare and foal as seasonal additions to the exhibit
for the summer months.
Many Manitobans have never had the
opportunity to see a heavy horse team in action,
so I expect this to be a very popular exhibit and
memorable experience for our visitors, said Dr.
Brian Joseph, Director of Zoological Operations,
Assiniboine Park Zoo.

is in the process of identifying a second pair of

horses for the exhibit.
In the meantime, select Zookeepers will continue
with special training, learning how to harness,
drive, groom, and feed the horses so they are
ready to care for these gentle giants in their new
home at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.
The McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre is expected
to open later this summer. Please watch the Zoo
website and our Facebook page for updates.

Did you know?

In 1901, there were over 1.2 million heavy horses
hard at work on over 200,000 farms in Canadas
Prairie Provinces. By 1951, only 304,000 remained,
as horses were gradually replaced by gasolinepowered machinery.

Flame and Ice, a pair of Percherons, are the first

two horses selected by the Zoo for the exhibit.
Percherons, a breed traditionally used as both
freight and farm horses, were one of the first
breeds brought to Canada and are known for their
strength, stamina, and tireless work ethic. The Zoo
