Lab Exercise 1 PS Series Initial Configuration Using the Console Port Setup Utility

Preparation
At the completion of this lab each group will be comprised of a single member.
Using the information in Tables 3 from the Lab Configuration and Setup module, each student
team is assigned to a specific group by the instructor. Use the configuration parameters shown in
that table to configure your member array for the remainder of the lab exercises.
Caution: Because there are multiple arrays and groups, use care to ensure that your group is
configuring the PS Series Storage Array assigned to your student team and that you are not
using another groups array or configuration parameters.
1. Identify which of physical PS Series Storage Arrays is the one you will be configuring.
a. Using the table of the set assigned to your group by instructor in the Lab Configuration and
Setup section record the serial number of your groups array.
Your arrays serial number: _______________________________, eg SHU0943824GECCD.
b. Using Tables 2 in the Lab Configuration and Setup module, identify and record below your
groups information; refer to Tables 3 for all IP addresses for your Group, eth0, eth1, and eth2
interfaces :
____________ SET (Mark the set you will be using provided by the instructor)

Setup Utility - PS Series Storage Array Quick start configuration

This section of the lab describes the steps you need to quickly perform the configuration of the PS Series
Storage Array. Care should be taken to ensure that your group is configuring the proper PS Series
Storage Array correctly.
1. Login to the PS Series storage array serial console port. If necessary, refer to the Lab Configuration
and Setup module procedures on how to connect and login to the active control module.
a. At the User ID prompt enter grpadmin.
b. At the password prompt enter grpadmin. This is the default logon information for the PS Series
Storage Array, you will change it during setup.
2. After logging in you should be automatically prompted by the program if you want to configure the
array now, answer yes to continue to launch the CLI-based setup utility.
Note: The setup utility can be run manually by using the CLI setup command.
3. Using the information that you recorded in List 1, answer the questions provided by the Setup Utility,
ask the instructor if you need to verify the correct information.
Note:

Subnet Mask = 255.255.0.0 (do not use the default of 255.255.255.0)

Default Gateway IP address = 172.168.0.1

a. Configure Member information:

i.

Member name choose your member name from List 1 above.

ii.

Network Interface [eth0] leave at default, eth0.

iii. IP address for ethernet0 use the IP address from List 1 above.
iv. Subnet mask use 255.255.0.0 as defined in List 1 above.
v.

Default Gateway leave at default IP address of 172.168.0.1.

b. Configure the Group information.

c.

i.

Group name choose your member name from List 1 above.

ii.

Group IP address use the group IP address from List 1 above.

Password configuration
i.

Membership Password use eql Do not use the quotation marks. You may need to enter
eql several times but it will be accepted by the system.

ii.

Administration Password use eql Do not use the quotation marks. You may need to
enter eql several times but it will be accepted by the system.
Note: The administrative password changes the default grpadmin login credentials, the arrays
login = grpadmin, password = eql, you will need to use this login the next time you attempt to
connect to the CLI or GUI.

4. Once the Setup Utility completes, the next step is to specify the RAID Policy for the array.
a. To view the effects of setting the RAID policy for the array, at the command prompt issue the
show command and record the information shown for each of the following parameters:
i.

TotalCapacity: __________________________

ii.

VolumeReportedSpace: __________________________

iii. SnapReservedSpace: ____________________

b. To specify the RAID type for the array enter the following command syntax,
i.

At the command prompt enter show and record the following information:
> show
What is the arrays member name ______________________________

ii.

At the command prompt select that member to configure and configure the RAID policy:
> member select <member name>
member name> raid-policy <choose the raid you wish to use raid10, raid50)
For example:
> member select edu01
edu01> raid-policy raid50

c.

Use the exit command to return to the top level.

d. To view the changes due to setting the RAID Policy, at the command prompt issue the show
command again and record the following information below.
i.

TotalCapacity: ________________

ii.

VolumeReportedSpace: _________________

iii. SnapReservedSpace: ____________________

What was the effect on the array after setting the RAID Policy? __________________________

Observing and recording the PS Series Array status

This section of the lab describes the initial boot steps of the chassis and gives you the opportunity to
record the status of each component.
1. Open a web browser and enter the Group IP address of your array to connect to the Group
Manager GUI, login with your new credentials that you created previously, the credentials should
be:
Login = grpadmin
Password = eql
2. From the navigation tree located on the left, expand the Members and click on the member you
configured.
a. Select the Status tab located to the right and choose the Rear View and mouse over
available Ethernet ports of your array.
eth0: Current Status_________

Speed_________ MTU Size__________

eth1: Current Status_________

Speed_________ MTU Size__________

eth2: Current Status_________

Speed_________ MTU Size__________

eth3: Current Status_________

Speed_________ MTU Size__________

b. Select the Enclosure tab to view both Power Supply 0 and Power Supply 1 Status.
c.

Click the Versions tab and record the Backplane serial number, this is the array serial
number. ______________________________________________________________

d. Click the Maintenance tab, what tasks are available:

_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
3. Determine which of the two control modules (CMs) is the active module and which is the
secondary module by clicking the Controllers tab and record the results below.
Active CM slot: _____
Secondary CM slot: _____

Reset the PS Series Array to Factory Settings

1. Now prepare the array for the next lab by resetting the array. Enter the reset command at the
prompt to reset the array back to factory defaults.
2. When prompted, acknowledge that you want to reset the array by responding with
DeleteAllMyDataNow, and then hit enter.

Caution: The reset command irretrievably removes all group, member, and volume configuration
information and any volume data on the array. The array will not be useable until it is setup again.
Before resetting an array, be certain that you have backup all data that is needed.
Never run reset on an array that is a member of a multi-member group, instead use the member delete
command to remove the member from the group, which migrate data on to other members and then
automatically run the reset command.
If the array is the only remaining member of a group, then run the reset command. (You cannot use the
member delete command on the last member of a group.)
