CD Package

Materials
Any medium or combination of media, Bristol board,
pencil, eraser, x-acto knife, ruler, CD case.

Directions
1. Exercise care when taking the plastic CD case apart.

2. Create an exciting design for the case, including both

the front and back covers (don’t forget the spine!)

3. Don’t be overly concerned with minutia details like

song titles, production credits, etc. If you choose to use
text it must work on a visual level.

4. Ideas? Your design can be based on a favorite genre of

music (classical, jazz, reggae, rap, hip-hop, blues, a sound
track, etc). You cannot recreate an existing design or use
an existing band logo.

5. It is extremely important that you measure carefully to

insure that both the front and back cover fit into the CD
case properly.

6. Don’t neglect the thin little spine space. What can be

creatively squeezed into that space?

7. Media? You may use anything, but concentrate and

focus on pattern and texture. What kind of texture can
be created through image? Use textures you create, find
existing textures in a magazine or use found objects.

8. If you choose to use collage, the final product should be

a Xerox color copy of your work. This way the design will
fit nice and flat into the CD case.

9. Put your name in pencil on the inside cover.

Texture Assignment

In design, texture is both physical and virtual. Tex-

tures include the literal surface employed in the mak-
ing of a printed piece or physical object as well as the
optical appearance of that surface. Physical textures
effect how a piece feels to thehand, while virtual tex-
tures are optical effects or representations of textures.
In may cases, two-dimensional form uses texture as a
visual element that adds richness and dimension to
work. Texture can also refer to pattern, which can be
used as a background or as a more prominent role.

The goal of this assignment is to create patterns or

textures through the interpretation of music and
use those textures to communicate the genre. Think
about the physical elements of music you choose
(piano, b&w keys, guitars, strings, ribs, hammers,
wires, etc.) as well as how the music makes you feel.
If you were to show what your favorite genre of music
looks like, what would it be? What kind of line weight
would you use? What kind of materials would you
use to create that line? Explore the use of repetition,
contrast, balance (symmetrical & asymmetrical) and
rhythm. Texture and pattern can create an incredible
sense of movement and activity which should reflect
your chosen genre.
