Detail of Duties:
During my first weeks at Whitman-Walker Health, I spent the
majority of my day producing images and copy to promote National
Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, as well as WWHs mobile testing unit.
Through this, I learned to schedule posts on Facebook and Twitters
Tweetdeck. Now, I have posts scheduled for as late as September this
year. I will provide images of my posts.
By my third week, I was spearheading the writing and editing of
the Human Rights Campaign and WWHs jointly published Safer Sex
brochure. Additionally, as WWH continues its growth as a leading
community health provider, our Communications Director sought out a
PR firm to aid in the organizations publicity. I had the privilege of
reading media proposals from firms like BeeKeeper, Havit, the Raben
Group and more. My supervisor even asked for my opinion on the
proposals! We disliked the same proposals and agreed on the
frontrunners. This Friday, Ill be sitting in on Havits presentation and I
cant wait. I will offer my notes on some of the candidates and a copy
of my edits to the brochure.
Finally, I worked on a lot of social media promotion for the
Washington City Papers Best of D.C. As a previous winner of the best
non-profit award, I made numerous posts inviting our followers to vote
for us on the WCP website. My voting bitlink received 38 clicks and
hopefully 38 votes! I will provide a screenshot of the bitlink graph.
Professional Value:
The bigger-picture effect on the organization is increased
knowledge of their work and a stronger online presence. Additionally,

because the organization just acquired Metro TeenAIDS, it will be


beneficial for them to have a youths point of view in the office.
This experience is also granting me more hands-on multitasking
application and practice writing copy for multiple social media
platforms. I have also been introduced to how large advertising
budgets are and how the portions are allocated. This makes me
marketable because I efficiently juggle tasks, possess diverse writing
skills and have experience with media budgets.
Personal Value:
Ive noticed that Im excelling at prioritizing work. In a given day,
Ill have multiple deadlines to meet. Some are long-term, like Twitter
post for September, while others are due at the start of my workday.
This skill is useful because even during kindergarten, there was never
just one deadline.
Major Connection:
One of the main components of communication theory is
transmitting a message from a sender to a receiver. Furthermore its
realizing the most efficient way to communicate that message.
Interning at WWH has allowed to practice tailoring my messages for
higher effect. It comes down to knowing my audience, something I
learned in my first PR class here at UMD. It is much different putting
practice to application, but Im learning a lot about the message
catering process.
