RISING PHOENIX - LIFE FROM THE ASHES OF DREAMS

Remember the bird Phoenix that rises from its ashes to glory once again. Similar is the story of fighter
pilot Anil Kumar who was incapacitated neck-downwards in a motorbike accident and yet used his
available abilities to rise again as an inspiration for the school children of Maharashtra.
It was a freak motorbike accident at the Air Force Station, Pathankot, Punjab on June 28, 1988 that
became the turning point in the life of Anil Kumar, Chirayinkeezhu. The accident wasnt serious but
the way he was lifted into a car afterwards caused serious injury to his spine.
The next day he was shifted to the Army Hospital at Delhi. Even after an operation there, his condition did not improve. So after two weeks, he was shifted to the Military Hospital at Pune. Here he was
under treatment for two years. His relatives and friends could only hope and pray for the former
Flying Officer whose body had been paralysed below the neck.
In the meanwhile another shock awaited him. On April 12, 1990, he was discharged from the Air
Force. And with that his stay at the Military Hospital too came to an end.
With the help of friends and relatives, he then moved to the famous Paraplegic Home at Pune.
Life then was like a hazy cloud for the 26 year old Anil Kumar. He had studied at Sainik School,
Kazhakoottam and National Defence Academy, Pune. In the 65th course of the Academy, he had
been selected as the best Air Force Cadet. In the passing out parade held at Secunderabad, he had
been selected as the best pilot in aerobatics. This brilliant pilot who had been promoted thrice in four
years was now lying on his bed like a bird clipped of its wings.
But Anil was not prepared to give up.
With a pen stuck between his teeth, he slowly learned to write. And sent beautifully autographed
greeting cards to friends and relatives.
In the meanwhile, Citizen magazine of Pune conducted a contest on Turning Point of Life.
Anil Kumar wrote about the tragic moments of his life with a pen held in his mouth.
His article Airborne to Chair-borne amazed the magazine. They came to Paraplegic Home to verify
whether he had himself written those beautifully calligraphed pages.
The magazine not only awarded the prize to Anil, but also published the story with much prominence.
His story received much acclaim. A lady professor who was a member of the textbook revision committee too saw the article. She recommended that Anil Kumars life story be included in the curriculum as
an inspiration for the students.
Thus from 1995, in the English Text Book of 10th standard, his story is being taught in Maharashtra.
It is inspiring to the students to learn that the person whose life they are studying, is alive at Pune.
They come in groups to meet him and share their joy at his remarkable will power.
Anil Kumars life again took a decisive turn when he was introduced to computers. With a special
mouse and keyboard as well as a battery-operated trolley for the computer made available to him, he
learned very fast Web Designing, VB and C++. He later opened a charming website for the Paraplegic Home.
With his many contacts in cyber world and real world, Anil Kumar leads an inspiring and busy life.

SSKZM-GET TOGETHER AT NEWCASTLE, U.K.

This was the occasion of Mr.K.K. Muthanna and Mrs. K. Gowri Muthannas 3 weeks tour
of England, particularly to an idealistically modern typical English Grammar School turned to High
School meant for 18 years plus (which is equivalent to Indias PUC or Higher Secondary plus one
year). In England the Government School which caters to the needs of a student upto nineteen year
olds are given free education. The Government Schools where we observed the working conditions
The Kazhakian Bulletin

are excellent in the infrastructure. It cannot be compared with any of our Indian counterpart whether
it is Private or Government run school. The schools are superb. They are simply rich and well catered
to the needs of the students. Every classroom is computer aided with TV, Video, overhead projector,
overhead camera with smart white boards.
The brighter side for us was the get together of Sainik School, Kazhakootam old boys
and thier families all the way 8000 Air Kilometres from India up at NewCastle Upon Tyne in
England. Dr. Paul Antony (Roll No. 630) Prof. in Economics in the famous Corpus Christy College
of Cambridge University, drove up all the way from Cambridge to New Castle with his smart wife
Mrs. Mary who is a librarian there and their bright son Anthony ( 6 years old). Yadunath Tekale (Roll
No. 1459) who is Vice President of Computer Hardware company in England, London drove up on
the same evening of Saturday, the 10th May 2003, along with his beautiful wife Mrs. Archana, who
is a teacher in London, and their precocious child Ameya (31/2 years old). Both the families called on
us. We decided to have the get together of SSKZM old students at the Italian restaurant Amecci at
Gosforth. We spent a glorious 2 hours eating delicious dishes, taking photographs, recalling the
ever enchanting episodes of Sainik School days.
Can you imagine Paul Antony recalling, his VI std. days in SSKZM when his English Master Mr. Muthanna, in the interactive English class, putting him in a class cupboard as he had to act
like a cat, and repeat the cats words in the dialogue. Now he says, he was thrilled as he was selected
for that acting and tells his son with great alacrity.
Yadu recalls his day with Madam Mrs. Gowri Muthanna and his playmates, Nisha, Nidhin,
Mini, Mangesh .......... any number, with whom he spent the golden days in Sainik Nursery Schools.
The refreshing telephone calls from Prof. Ajith Shenoy (Roll No.218) Southhampton University,
London, Ajith P. Menon (Roll No. 490), Dilip Mathew (Roll No. 573) from Swissbank, London,
made the get together complete in England. It was perfectly memorable trip to Britain.
Thanks to Mr. Jayakumar (Roll No.892) and Rajoo Krishnan (Roll No.563) who made this
wonderful get together possible from their remote control e-mails.
(Mr. K.K. Muthanna, Ex-master 1963-77)

KAZAKS CLUB
(Fraternity of the Old Boys, Sainik School, Kazhakootom)
Thiruvananthapuram
21-05-2003
Dear Kazhakian,
The KAZAKS CLUB is two years old. Over the past couple of years, it has grown from strength to
strength, in terms of both quantity and quality; thanks to the co-operation and dedication of our Old
Boys.
As the Club celebrates its second anniversary on June 22, 2003, and as we look back, we can only feel
proud of its present stature. And we hope and pray, the Club reaches greater heights in the years to
come.
With more Old Boys enrolling as members of the Club, there is the imperative need to improve the
facilities. Together, we can do it.
Welcome to the KAZAKS yet again; come and find that your dreams have come true in the shape of
the KAZAKS. An unforgettable experience of getting Back To School
When the last Kazhakian Bulletin was published, the Club had a membership of 106. By the end of
this year we hope to have a strength of over 200.
We the KAZHAKS wanted something that was completely different from anything the city had ever
seen. The name and theme of the Club had been thought of in advance and we were determined that
the theme Back to School would come through the KAZAKS Club.
As you walk into the Club you are awe struck by its ambience and the tremendous feeling of space.
Just two years past its official opening, it is being called the favourite haunt of the Old boys of Sainik
School.
One enters the lobby from where one can walk in different directions into the Library, Office, Dining
room, Pantry and the living room. A regal staircase with a solid teak railing leads upto the first floor
where we have the bedrooms. An ideal place to relax, retire and recharge.
Hardly 15 minutes drive from the Railway station, a stones throw away from the Airport, Veli Tourist
Village, Boat club and the Shangumugham Beach.
