Some Ecumenical Events

Joint Service for Pentecost - next Sunday 24th May at Mancetter Rec, 3 pm.
Revd Tony Tooby to preach.

Future Plans
Prayer Group - Scripture Group - We have decided to hold a series of
meetings on a Tuesday evening for a few weeks up until the summer
holidays. Since most of those who expressed interest put their names down
for both groups, it is thought that, initially at least, we should hold just one
meeting each week and combine teaching and discussion on Sacred
Scripture and a time also of prayer. The style of the prayer time will be
focused primarily on worship of God - learning about vocal praise,
sometimes using the Prayer of the Church (the Divine Office), which
provides a useful model for a structure of prayer.
The first meeting will take place on Tuesday 26th May after the 7.00pm
evening Mass in the Hall. We would aim to finish at about 9.00pm.

Eastertide
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord. The Ascension
marks the end of the period during which the apostles enjoyed the visible
presence of the Risen Jesus. Jesus spoke of returning to His Father. The
Gospel illustrates this by describing Jesus rising into the air and disappearing
from their view. We are not meant to think that Jesus just kept going on into
space - like a rocket - but rather that he moved into another dimension, the
presence of His Father (heaven). For us the primary revelation is that Jesus
has taken our humanity into the very heart of the Trinity. In a real sense, the
whole human race has begun to share in the heavenly life of the Trinity.
From our perspective, it seems that nothing has really changed. Life and
history continues as before the Ascension. When Jesus ascended,, the full
number of human beings had not yet been born - even today, the full total of
human beings is still growing. Only when the number is complete will we all
enter fully into the new dimension of Trinitarian life.
In the meantime, Jesus makes himself present among us through the
sacraments. The awesome nature of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist,
is that, by receiving them, we are lifted to a share in the heavenly life of Jesus.

More Items
Bible Alive - May issue - available at the back of the Church - please take one
Unused Rosaries: Do you have unused rosaries tucked away in the cupboard
or drawer, we are collecting rosaries to send out to various missions around the
world, this appeal is being made by The Catenians who have so far sent out
135,000 rosaries. It would be good if we could give this initiative our support,
spare rosaries can be given to Brian Ingram.
Confirmation Candidates - During May and June, children from Year 6 at St
Benedict's School will be assisting with the weekend Masses as part of their
preparation for Confirmation. Please support them in their roles and keep them
in your prayers at this important time in their spiritual lives. To accommodate this
there have been some changes to the Readers and Offertory Rotas (new rota is
on the notice board in the porch). If this affects you, we hope that you will
understand. Thank you!
First Holy Communion Mass - will take place at 12 noon on Sunday 7th June.
Congratulations to the children who made their 1st Confession last Thursday!
The Sacrament of Confirmation - Bishop William Keaney will be here at St
Benedict's to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on the children on Thursday
17th.
