STM8L, STM32L Ultra Low Power Microcontroller

Ultra-low-power MCUs are THE key component in developing
state-of-the-art portable healthcare devices. Remember, this
is also true for clinical devices. They need ultra-low-power
controllers despite the fact that they are usually powered
from mains. The reason for this is that they must be able to
work even when mains power fails and the device has not
been charged for months.
STM8L
16 MHz 8-bit CPU
Supply voltage: 1.65 to 3.6 V
Ultra-low-power modes: down to 350 nA with SRAM
and context retention

All of these very different medical devices still have some

Run mode consumption down to 150 A/MHz

basic concept in common. ST has a broad portfolio of

semiconductors to match the needs for all of the devices.

STM32L

The table below shows a selection of ST components that

32-bit ARM Cortex-M3: up to 33 DMips

can be found in most of the devices. Some outstanding

Power supply: 1.65 to 3.6 V

components are highlighted on the following pages.

6 ultra-low-power modes: down to 300 nA

Run mode: down to 230 A/MHz from Flash

The heart of each system is the microcontroller unit. ST

Run mode consumption down to 185 A/DMips

offers not only the perfect fit MCU, but provides also the
relevant firmware libraries. This includes for example the
Continua certified PHDC (Personal Healthcare Device Class)
USB driver, self-test routines for EN/IEC 60335-1 Class B and
efficient motor control libraries: a large range of application
notes is available.

REMOTE ACCESS TO DEVICES WITHOUT POWER
The M24LR64 provides the flexibility to remotely program
or update electronic products anytime during their lifetime
and anywhere in the supply chain. It is used to read
measurements from portable healthcare applications and
update the configuration data of clinical devices without
powering on the device.

supply a patient with his personal drug mix at the correct time
and monitor if the drug has been taken. An ultra-low-power
microcontroller like STM8L152 with LCD drive is the heart of
such a system. Programmed via USB or by buttons it gives an
alarm when the drug must be taken and reads from sensors if
they are really leaving the container. In sophisticated systems
even the pill can give feedback to the box to indicate if it has
been swallowed or simply put in the trash.

Blood-pressure monitors

LIS3DH Ultra-Low-Power and High

Performance Accelerometer
The LIS3DH is a three axes linear accelerometer of the nano
family. This means a 90% reduced power consumption down
to 2 A, a FIFO buffer for reduced host processor intervention
and an ultra small LGA16 package. Key Features are:
Wide supply voltage, 1.7 to 3.6 V
Ultra low-power mode, down to 2 A
2g/4g/8g/16g selectable full-scale
I2C/SPI digital output interface

Blood-pressure monitors (BPMs) are devices used to monitor

16 bit data output

the pressure of the blood in the human body (the force or

Free-fall detection

pressure that is exerted on the bodys arteries as blood flows

Motion detection

through them).

Embedded temperature sensor

Embedded 96 levels of 16 bit data output FIFO

The measurement is performed by using the oscillometric

method, which measures the fluctuations in pressure.
Mounted inside the cuff is a sensor that is capable of sensing
the small oscillations (fluctuations) in pressure which are
then converted into a digital value.
In order to get a precise measurement, the device must
be at the same height as the heart, especially for wrist
measurements. For this reason, the latest generation of
BPMs is also equipped with accelerometer sensors (MEMS)
which provide the correct position of the device during the
measurement.

digital medical monitors have automated numeric readouts of
the peak and/or average parameters displayed on the screen,

parameters are outside their set range. The connectivity to
different networks, using physical link or wireless technology,
is also a key feature for these devices.

The STHV748 is a monolithic, high-voltage, high-speed pulser
generator. It integrates also a TX/RX switch that guarantees
strong decoupling during the transmission phase and
minimizes the overall needed application area. It is mainly
designed for medical ultrasound applications although it may
be also used as driver for other piezoelectric, capacitive or
MEMS based transducer.
Features:
Output voltage: 90 V
Output current: up to 2 A
max 0.6 A during continuous wave mode

An ultrasound scan is a painless test that uses sound waves

to create images of organs and structures inside the body.
Since it uses sound waves and not radiation, it is considered
harmless. Today there are many breakthroughs occurring in
ultrasound imaging. The advent of true high-quality volumetric
imaging has greatly improved the diagnostic usefulness of
ultrasound. Portable ultrasound systems have expanded
the application of ultrasound into emergency medicine,
anesthesia, and faster detection/diagnosis of medical issues
during a routine checkup. Other developing applications for
ultrasound technology include high-intensity ultrasound for
cancer treatment, body sculpting, and cauterising of internal
blood vessels.
