DC MOTOR AND GENERATOR REPORT
PREPARED BY:

PREPARED FOR:

1.INTRODUCTION
A rotating electric machine which delivers a unidirectional voltage and current. An a

rmature winding mounted on the rotor supplies the electricpower output. One or mo
re field windings mounted on the statorestablish the magnetic flux in the air gap. A
voltage is induced in the
armature coils as a result of the relative motion between the coils and the air gap
Rectification is accomplished by a commutator mounted on the rotor shaft.Carbon b
rushes, insulated from the machine frame and secured in brush holders, transfer the
armature current from the rotating commutator to the external circuit.
This is a report to examine and test the given dc generator

2.OBJECTIVE
This is report to identify some parts and the function of the dc
generator. The main part of dc generator that student should
know is the yoke, field winding, salient poles, both the end assy,
the commutators, the armature windings and the armature core.
This practical also teach student how to inspect and method to
inspect the dc generator. This will make sure student will now the
condition of the dc generator that it is in good condition or bad
condition.
3.SAFETY PRECAUTION

Student must always:Wear proper workshop attire such as, safety boot, workshop jacket and
proper pants.
Must always wait and follow the instruction from the instructor.
Do not play with all the probes. Especially with the growler probes that
generate electric.
Take care all the instrument properly.
Make sure follow the correct procedure when doing the inspection

4. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Set of dc generator
A multimeter to check continuity of current
The growler to test armature
Hacksaw blade to check short circuit

5. Identification of the generator parts

Stators part

Parts
Yoke

Function
It holds the magnetic
pole cores of the
generator and acts as
cover of the generator

Field Winding

A field winding is
an electromagnet used to
generate a magnetic
field

Salient poles

The rotor is a large

electromagnet with poles
constructed of steel
lamination projecting out
of the rotors core.[7] The
poles are supplied by
direct current or
magnetized by
permanent magnets

Carbon Brush

A carbon brush is a
device which
conducts current betwee
n stationary wires and
moving parts, most
commonly in a
rotating shaft. These
carbon brush collect
current from the
commutator

The End Assy

Both of the front

and back end essy
holds the shaft of
the roatating
armature and
secure the yoke
and dc generator
assembly.

Function
A commutator
consists of a set of
contact bars fixed to
the rotating shaft of a
machine, and
connected to the
armature windings.
As the shaft rotates,
the commutator
reverses the flow of
current in a winding.
The armature winding
is the main currentcarrying winding in
which the
electromotive force or
counter-emf of rotation
is induced. The current
in the armature
winding is known as
the armature current.
The location of the
winding depends upon
the type of machine.
The armature windings
of dc motors are
located on the rotor,
since they must
operate in union with
the commutator

Armature core

The purpose of
armature core is to
hold the armature
winding and provide
low reluctance path
for the flux through
the armature from N
pole to S pole.

Inspection/methods

Carbon brush
assembly

Virtual check on the

condition of the winding
Check for insulation to
ground using resistance
meter/multimeter
Check for the armature
short circuit with the
growler on , put the
hacksaw blade parallel
to the shaft near the
winding . the hacksaw
should not vibrate

Virtual check and

measure the thickness
of the carbon brush

The winding
found to be in
excellent
condition and
high resistance
indicating good
insulation
between winding
and ground
The hacksaw
blade did not
vibrate indicating
the armature
winding is in
perfect condition
All in normal
condition

Yoke

Virtual check the yoke .

check for any corrosion
and burnt mark

The
commutators

Virtual check .look for

any damages
,overheating
Count the numbers of
commutators segment
and numbers of slots in
the core
Check the mica
insulators between the
commutators , it should
be below the height of
commutator
Using an ohmmeter or a
multimeter , check the
resistance between to
adjacent commutators
Check the resistance of
commutators to the
shaft

There was a
slight burn
mark
High
resistance
between
commutator
and shaft
indicating it is
in good
working order

Using suitable range of

ohmmeter check the
resistance of the field
and insulation of the
yoke.

There is a
slight burn
mark.
The insulator
is broken and
need to be
replace
The field
winding is in
perfect
working
condition

Field windings

Check the continuity of

the field winding

No corrosion. No
burn mark

Salient poles

Virtual check the salient

poles . check for any
corrosion and burnt
mark

Both the end

Assy

Virtual check the Both

Armature core

Check for the

armature open
circuit , put the
armature on a
growler , switch it on
and check the ac
voltage/current
between adjacent
commutators

the end Assy. check for

any corrosion and burnt
mark

There are no
pitting and
burn mark

There are no
pitting and
burn mark
There is no
armature open
circuit and it is
working fine.

7.Conclusion
The yoke is is good, field winding needed to be replace as the insulator is broken,
salient poles, both the end assy ok ,the commutators are working good but needed
to be service as there is a slight burn mark ,armature windings and the armature
core is also working fine . Some of the dc generator parts that my group inspected
needed to replace.
