1. Introduccin

aquellos ms retrados o reacios a participar.

enfermedades respiratorias planteadas inicialmente.

THE LIVER
The liver is not an excretory organ,
but produces many products which
are excreted elsewhere.
! Ammonia (NH 3 ), a waste product
from proteins really poisonous is
converted in Urea in the liver
which the kidney will eventually
filter, creating urine.
! Liver also helps to detoxify the blood by
removing and transforming some
chemicals that are potentially hazardous.
URINARY SYSTEM
The kidney is not one large filter. Each kidney is made up of about a million filtering
units called nephrons.
Each nephron filters a small amount of blood. The nephron includes a filter, called the
glomerulus, and a tubule.
The nephrons work through a three-step process.
HERE'S HOW IT HAPPENS
1) Arteries bring blood to the nephron so that material dissolved in the plasma can be
FILTERED.
2) There is a ball of capillaries (small blood vessels) in the nephron called the
glomerulus. This FILTERS OUT water, salts, amino acids, glucose, urea and other
waste products. However, it prevents blood cells and large molecules, (mostly proteins)
from passing into Bowman's capsule, which is a collecting tube.
3) As the materials move through the many tubes of the nephron, minerals, nutrients
and water (good stuff) are all REABSORBED BACK IN.
PATHWAY OF URINE
a) Kidneys: place of filtration, reabsorption and secretion
b) Ureter: urine flows from the collecting tubes in the kidneys to the ureter (a pipe)
c) Urinary Bladder: urine flows from ureter to this place where it is temporarily stored
d) Urethra: periodically, urine is EXCRETED from the bladder through the urethra

THE NEPHRON
!T he kidney is not one large filter. Each kidney
is made up of about a million filtering units
called nephrons
!E ach nephron filters a small amount of blood.
The nephron includes a filter, called the
glomerulus, and a tubule.
!T he nephrons work through a three-step
process.
!Glomerulus is a
cluster of
capillaries
protected by
Bowmans capsule
1.FILTRATION
!The blood plasma is full of nutrients, proteins,
ions, water, and other dissolved particles, some
of which the body needs, some of which the body
must remove. To remove the wastes, a large
portion of the plasma is FILTERED from the blood
and then the substances the body needs are put
back into the blood.
Substances in glomerular filtration: Blood plasma without
protein molecules which includes:
! Useful substances water, glucose, amino acids, vitamins,
hormones, and ions.
! Waste substances e.g. nitrogenous waste such as urea, and
other toxic components as drugs,
FILTRATION
2. REABSORPTION
Everyday, about 180 Liters of plasma are
filtered through the kidneys in the millions
of Glomerulus.
But we only produce 1.5 Liters of urine
This is possible because 99% of filtrate is
reabsorbed (mostly, water)
As the materials move through the many
tubes of the nephron, minerals, nutrients
and water (good stuff) are all
REABSORBED BACK IN.
3. SECRETION
! In a final step called SECRETION any susbstances remaining in
the capillares that were not filtered out originally, but our
body needs to remove, are secreted to the filtered:
! - drugs
! - some ions
! - colorants
Attention! Secretion excretion
PATHWAY OF URINE
a) Kidneys: place of filtration, reabsorption and
secretion
b) Ureter: urine flows from the collecting tubes in the
kidneys to the ureter (a pipe)
c) Urinary Bladder: urine flows from ureter to this
place where it is temporarily stored
d) Urethra: periodically, urine is finally EXCRETED
from the bladder through the urethra
URINE COMPOSITION
! About 96% of urine is
water.
! 1.5% is salts , mainly
sodium chloride.
! Urea makes up 2%
! Small quantities of drugs,
colourants, hormones
and preservatives.
ACTIVITIES
! Activity 1: Inside the nephron, there is an exchange of
substances between the blood and the filtrate (which will
become urine). Can you relate this structure with one of the
respiratory system? Can you tell some similarities and some
differences?

RENAL FAILURE
Treatment:
Medication and dietary restrictions
At final stages:
Hemodialysis: A machine does the
function of kidneys: removal of
waste products and water from the
blood when the kidneys are in
state of renal failure.
Kydney transplantation: Organ
transplant from a donor.
RENAL CALCULUS
Depending on the
material, they vary
in size and shape
Treatment:
- Shock wave: A special machine is used to
crush the kidney stone. Is applied from outside the
body
- Ureteroscopy: a tubelike instrument is used to
find and retrieve the stone with a small basket or to
break the stone up with laser energy.
Prevention:
- Prescribed medication for susceptible
people.
- Drinking enough fluids (water)
- Dietary recomendations

Breathing
During the inspiration we inhale air that contains O2. To make it
happen our diaphragm contracts and the thoracic cavity expands to
leave space for the lungs that contain a lot of oxygen, in a few
seconds, the gas exchange takes place in the alveoli and oxygen is
passed into the blood and it is exchanged for CO2. During the
expiration process we expel the C02 as a residual element.
Remember that external intercostal muscles act during this process
too; its contraction acts during the inhalation, and has the same
function as the diaphragm, the thoracic cavity becomes bigger. During
exhalation externals intercostal muscles relax, and thoracic cavity size
becomes smaller and the air moves out of the lungs.
Change of pressure is a important characteristic of this process too.
When the thoracic cavity expands pressure in the thoracic cavity is
lower, and the air can flow into the lungs. When it doesnt the
pressure is higher, the lungs are squeezed and the air leaves the lungs
Renal Failure:
- What is it
-Kinds and differences
! Renal failure is an disease that means that our
kidneys dont work well. Toxins can accumulate in
our blood because it is not filtered well. It can be
acute (days/hours) or chronic (during or the life).
Differences between:
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchi
Bronchioli
! The larynx is part of the upper respiratory tract that has two
main functions: a passageway for air to enter into the lungs,
and a source of vocalization
! Trachea filters the air we inhale and branches into the bronchi.
The trachea has like small circles. It is made of hard cartilage
to avoid it collapse. Divides into the right and left bronchus.
It is normal that we
accumulate salts in our
kidneys?
! No. Accumulation of salts can develop a disease
called kidney stones or renal calculi.
If they are too big they can block the urine flow and it
can be very painful. If they are not excreted with the
urine doctors have to break them using ultrasounds or
remove it using ureteroscopy.
What is a nephron?
Characteristics
! Is the filtering unit in the kidneys.
! Each kidney has millions of them
! It is surrounded by capillaries
! It has different parts
! Glomerulus, protected by Bowmans capsule
! Different tubules
!
