NEXT GENERATION INSULATION

Low Energy
Low Carbon Buildings

Introduction
The Challenge
Energy efficiency is key to delivering so many of Europes
economic, energy, environmental and social policy objectives.
Buildings have the biggest role to play as they consume more
energy than any other sector. They account for 40% of Europes
energy use and a third of its greenhouse gas emissions.

The demands of regulation are increasingly requiring higher levels

of thermal insulation in the building envelope. And thats a good
thing, as higher levels of thermal insulation reduce a buildings
demand for energy. But increasing insulation levels will lead to
more complicated and deeper / wider constructions unless we
can find new solutions to comply with tomorrows demands with
todays constructions.

The goal for the European Union and its member states is to
halve their carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. If we want to
transform our society into one that is energy efficient and
decarbonised, energy-intelligent buildings will play a vital role.
By using energy saving materials and technologies, most
buildings could reduce their energy consumption and carbon
dioxide emissions to a fraction of current levels, and therefore
reduce the impact buildings have on our environment
throughout their lifecycle.

Premium performance insulation products, that will do this in

many constructions, are already available. However in certain
constructions, for example when renovating existing buildings,
a new, thinner, product is needed. And these technologies are
now available.

The Next Generation of Insulation

The Solution
Kingspan
is manufactured at Kingspan
Insulations Pembridge, UK, facility where panels are routinely
tested as part of a comprehensive quality control programme.
is manufactured to the highest
Kingspan
standards under a management system certified to
BS / I.S. EN ISO 9001: 2008 (Quality management systems.
Requirements), BS / I.S. EN ISO 14001: 2004 (Environmental
Management Systems. Requirements) and BS / I.S. OHSAS
18001: 2007 (Health and Safety Management Systems.
Requirements). Manufacturing excellence, first class customer
service and unrivalled expertise in meeting the needs of the
market are just some of the many strengths that Kingspan
Insulation offers to designers, engineers and contractors.

To help solve these problems Kingspan Insulation has

developed
. The exceptional level of thermal
efficiency with minimal thickness, achieved by Kingspan
, provides solutions for applications where
space is an issue.
Kingspan
is a vacuum insulation panel (VIP),
and provides an insulating performance that is up to three
times better than existing high and premium performance
materials and up to five times better than other commonly
available insulation materials. This is a significant improvement
and marks a radical step change in thermal performance:
the Next Generation of Insulation.

The History of Vacuum Technology

First laboratory
vacuum produced
Evangelista Torricelli produced
the first laboratory vacuum in
1643, and other experimental
techniques were developed as
a result of his theories of
atmospheric pressure.

First Vacuum
Insulation Panel
(VIP)
The first vacuum insulation
panel (VIP) emerges. A patent
is filed on a rubber enclosed
porous body. Research continues
into different materials.

1643
1930
1892
1970
First commercial
applications for VIPs
Vacuum insulation panels are
developed for use in refrigerators,
freezers and cold shipping boxes.
The outstanding thermal performance of
VIPs is able to provide the thinnest possible solutions
to a number of temperature-controlled applications.

Vacuum flask invented

The Vacuum Flask is invented
by Sir James Dewar.
Vacuum insulated panels
are based on the same
principles as the vacuum
flask the vacuum ensures
that convection and
conduction cannot occur,
resulting in an outstanding thermal
performance.

Kingspan Insulation
introduces
Vacuum insulation technology is introduced
to the building industry by Kingspan.
With a declared (aged) thermal conductivity of
0.007 W/m.K, Kingspan
provides a high level of thermal efficiency with
minimal thickness.

VIPs receive approval

in USA
The US Department of Housing and Urban
Development began research to evaluate the
market potential for the use of vacuum insulated
panels in residential buildings. The research took
place over 3 years and concluded that VIPs have
become a feasible and important means for
designing energy efficient buildings.

New
production line

VIPs become
popular in
Europe

The installation of a new,

revolutionary,
production line is commissioned to
fulfil demand for projects worldwide.
The new production line will manufacture vacuum
insulated panels, which can provide an insulating
performance that is up to five times better than
other commonly available insulation materials.

VIPs become
increasingly popular in
Germany, Switzerland and Scandinavia, where
they are used in a number of applications
including flooring and faades.

Product Details
Kingspan
comprises a micro-porous core,
which is evacuated, encased, and sealed in a thin, gas-tight
envelope, giving outstanding thermal conductivity and the
thinnest possible solution to insulation problems. With a
declared (aged) thermal conductivity () of 0.007 W/m.K, it
provides an insulating performance that is up to five times
better than other commonly available insulation materials.
