Zvzeda continue to expand their series of snaptogether 1:200 kits, intended for wargaming,
but also ideal for those with restricted storage
and display space. The latest is the Junkers Ju
88 (#6186) and it is a neat little kit, with good
levels of detail and even things like a separate
clear canopy and front nose glazing; in all there
are eighteen grey-coloured and three clear
plastic parts plus a two-part display stand.
The snap-together nature of the kit may put
some off, which is a shame because the parts
are nicely moulded, plus you get decals and a
display stand. The kit should be available from
all Zvezda stockists for just 2.99, or in case of
difculty contact the UK importer, The Hobby
Company Ltd.

Amberley Books have just released

a new title in their series entitled
The Second World War in the Air in
Photographs and it deals with the 1940
period (ISBN: 978-1-4456-2239-2). The
23.5x16.6cm title has 128 pages and
a laminated card cover. Inside you will
nd a nice selection of period images
showing all aspects of the air ghting
around the globe during 1940, not just
the actual aircraft, but the effects on the
civil population as well. Each month is
covered in turn with good captions and
one or two images per page, so they
are nice and big.
Although not intended as some ultimate
guide, this is a useful title offering a
lot of inspirational images if you are
into building dioramas etc. Most of
the title is in black and white, but the
centre 16 pages are full colour. It is
available for 15.99 and should be in all
good bookshops as well as numerous
Internet outlets, and the coverage of
1939 in this series is also available from
Amberley (ISBN: 978-1-4456-2234-7)

The world above Cars

Zvzeda released various snap-together kits from the rst Disney Planes animated movie, well
now they are doing the same with the second one (Planes: Fire & Rescue). For this movie the
collection includes three aircraft, Dusty Crophopper (see here), Blade Ranger (#2077) and
LilDipper (#2076) along with three vehicles (Avalanche #2079, Ryker #2078 and Drip #2081).
Each kit is intended as a rst for many future model makers and in that Zvezda have to be
commended, their choice of such a movie for such kits is also inspired, as youngsters will want
to y these models just like we did with various Airx, Matchbox and Revell kits way back
when! The aircraft kits mentioned should be available from all Zvezda stockists from 4.99 for
Dusty through to 7.99 for Blade Ranger and LilDipper, or in case of difculty contact the UK
importer, The Hobby Company Ltd.

Valiant Wings - New & Future

Having announced their next title in the Airframe Album
series (Bristol Blenheim) last month, Valiant Wings are about
to launch a new series, entitled Airframe Detail. This series
will major on the technical aspects of specic aircraft types,
with their usual high quality coverage via period images and
diagrams plus photos of modern preserved examples and
this will be combined with a detailed section on camouage
and markings, with artwork by Richard J. Caruana, and
(where applicable) builds of some of the best kits in popular
scales. All of this will be supported by appendices listing
kits, accessories and decals as well as a full bibliography.
The series will be covering those subjects that while of great
interest and historical importance do not have sufcient
variants and/or production to allow inclusion in the existing
Airframe & Miniature or Airframe Album series. To start the ball
rolling the rst title in the series will be on the very odd-looking
asymmetric Blohm & Voss Bv 141.

have been well served recently
with new kits from Tamiya and
Pacic Coast, and now Revell have
joined in with an all-new kit of a
Mk IIa. The big difference with the new kit is
price. Where the Tamiya kits are well over a
hundred pounds each now, the Revell kit is
well priced at just over twenty here in the UK.
Test shots of this new kit were rst shown quite
a while ago and at the time sparked some
controversy over certain parts and surface
details. The worst error was the instrument
panel, which had been reversed, probably on

the computer at the design stage. Well I can

safely say this has now been corrected on
the production kit. The other big talking point
was the surface detail. Some parts are very
heavily overdone, in particular the control
surfaces. The rivets and panel lines are nicely
engraved but the problem is with the rivets.
They are everywhere! Although strictly correct
in their positioning, on the real airframe at the
factory most of these were lled and sanded
ush on the nished aircraft and so were not
visible. The worst of these are on the engine
cowlings, forward fuselage sides and the
leading edge of the wings. Moving along the

cockpit is nicely detailed but is let down by

the seat, which doesnt look quite right and is
ddly to assemble. The armour panel behind
the seat is missing altogether but wouldnt
be too difcult to make from some plasticard.
There are a few other points that have been
raised regarding this kit, for example there
shouldnt be a crowbar on the door, and is the
oil cooler correct? After looking through my
many reference books it would appear that Mk
II Spits were built with both the early half-round
Mk I and later the round Mk V oil coolers. The
other possibility is of course retro-tting of the
later-style oil coolers on earlier aircraft. I shall
get this one out of the way now. The biggest
disappointment with this kit is the wheels. It
doesnt matter if they are three-, four- or vespoke wheels from the Mk I right through to the
Seare 47. They are all dished wheels, so why
have Revell made them domed? These were
replaced with some spares from a Hasegawa
Mk V kit although there are many suitable resin
replacements already on the market. The rest
of the package is completed with a typical
Revell instruction sheet with references to their
own paint range and mixes of them. Decals
are provided for two aircraft from Nos.19 and
65 Squadrons circa 1941. These are nicely
printed with good colours and register. If youve
read some of my more recent builds youre
probably thinking Oh no, not another one but
despite the apparent problems I was still keen
to get on with this one.
The rst job was to deal with some of the
rivets. I decided to ll the fuselage ones but
leave the wing to see how they looked under

some paint. After looking through some photos

I set about the fuselage and cowling rivets
with a pot of Mr Dissolved Putty and an old
brush. This wet-sands very easily once dry and
after a couple of rounds of lling and sanding
I was satised they were pretty much gone. I
could now get on with the actual build starting
in the cockpit. The sub-assemblies all came
together very quickly so it was time for some
paint. The cockpit parts were all given a coat
of Mr Colour 364 BS283 Aircraft Grey Green.
A decal is supplied for the instrument panel
but for this one I decided to paint it black and
add the dials using the excellent MDC RAF
Instrument decals. The seat was dressed up
with a back cushion made of foil and an etched
brass harness, once again by MDC. With the
detail painting done and a few other placard
decals added the fuselage was closed up and
set aside to dry. Moving onto the wings these
built up quickly although a word of advice
here is not to add any glue along the rear
edge in the ap bays if you are going to have
the aps closed. It is a lot easier to get them
correctly positioned with this seam loose and
then applying some extra thin cement along
the seams. The wing could now be added to
the fuselage. After a quick go around with the
sanding sticks the only place any real ller
was needed was on the underside of the wing
tips, typical of just about any Spitre model
there, then. Before adding the tail feathers
the overdone surface detail on the rudder and
elevators was reduced with a sanding stick.
With the addition of the radiator, oil cooler, front
screen and a few other details it was more or

less time for some paint.

With some masking on the screen and the
cockpit plugged with a piece of foam, some
thinned black paint was sprayed around the
panel lines as a pre-shade. This was followed
by the underside colour, in this case GSI
Creos (Gunze-Sangyo) H74 Sky not forgetting
to carry this round the rear of the fuselage
for the tail band. The following evening the
fuselage band and undersides were masked
with Tamiya tape. Next up was the upper
camouage starting with GSI Creos H72 Dark
Earth, with a lightened mix dusted over the
centre of the panels. The H73 Dark Green
was then applied freehand and once again
a lightened mix dusted on as per the brown.
With the underside masking removed the
whole model was given a coat of Johnsons
Klear to seal the paint and prepare for the
decals. These went on well needing just a
touch of Micro Set/Sol to bed them down.
With the decals dry any excess decal solution
was wiped off and wash of grey ink applied to
the recessed detail with the exception of the
wing leading edges. Some wear and tear was
applied with a combination of Citadel Boltgun
Metal paint and a Pentel pencil. While that
all well and truly dried, the undercarriage,
propeller and exhaust stubs were built up
and painted before they were added to the
airframe. The whole model was nally given a
coat of Vallejo satin clear to even everything
up. The oil stains on the underside were added
leaving just the lights and aerials to complete
the model.

FINAL VERDICT
Despite the criticism this kit has received it doesnt take much to get a nice model out of the box. It builds nicely and most importantly, looks right. A
big factor in todays market is of course price and even if you factor in replacing the wheels and getting a harness set for it a 1:32 Spitre Mk IIa for
about 30 cant be bad.
Was it worth the effort?
Would I build another? Ive already bought one!

Cold War

ICON

Sword is one of the few manufacturers that instead of relying upon bestsellers like
the Bf 109 or P-51 are continually filling gaps among less frequent types in 1:72.
Recently RAF fans have enjoyed the release of the two-seat Harrier T Mk 2 and
T Mk 4 kits and now another British icon of the Cold War is here, the English
Electric Lightning in either T Mk 4 or T Mk 5 training versions.

ere I am building the T Mk 5 and it

consists of two blue/grey-coloured
plastic sprues with approximately
100 parts, some pre-painted
photo-etched, four resin parts
and a two-part canopy. The larger plastic parts
are typical for Sword, being moulded with an
extremely glossy surface, and although some
of the smaller parts suffer slightly from ash
or visible tooling dividing lines, the overall
quality of the plastic parts is very good indeed.
The panel lines are delicate but too shallow
and inconsistent at places, especially on
the fuselage. The control surfaces are well
separated with thicker lines, and it is nice to
see that the ailerons and landing aps are
moulded separately to allow them to be posed
in a deected position. The tooling is designed
to cover both T Mk 4 and T Mk 5 versions,
therefore the n is moulded separately, plus
you get both types of air-to-air missiles carried
by the Lightning, the Firestreak and Red Top.
The etched fret, apart from the usual cockpit
parts, includes various antennas of the various
electronic systems, and there were many of
them in the Lightning! The resin parts are
excellent, especially the ne exhaust nozzles,
although in my kit I could not nd the pitot tube
that is shown in the instructions; fortunately
this part is included in the plastic anyway.
The separate canopy is nicely transparent,
however it may be a little bit on the thick side

in this scale. The individual building steps are

pretty well drawn in the instructions, but at
some points you do not get the exact position
of parts like the landing gear or antennas on
the underside, so it is essential to have a good
set of drawing or photographs to hand. The
camouage schemes are only given as general
colours without any specic paint call-outs, but
it is clear enough; additionally, the coloured
proles are printed on the reverse of the box.
The instructions contain the stencil placement
guide, which is obviously taken from the T.4
kit but works for most of the stencils, however
some I could not nd on the decal sheet or their
numbers did not correspond to those quoted
in the instructions, so take care. Included are
markings for three options: XS452 of No.226
OCU in natural metal, XS458/DY in grey-green
camouage and XV328/DU wearing the late
camouage of two tones of grey; these last two

both came from the Lightning Training Flight in

the late 1980s.
Before commencing the build I spent en
evening rectifying the shallow panel lines with
a UMM scribing tool; on the fuselage I also
used pieces of electricians tape to help the tool
keep on track. The build starts with assembly of
the nose cone that also forms the front wheel
bay. Inside the cone you can insert some lead
ballast, but the volume is obviously too small
to prevent tail sitting, so I added approximately
7 grams of shing plummets behind the lower
engine bulkhead. Anyway, the correct position
of these parts is not marked inside the fuselage,
so some trial tting was needed to align them
correctly. In my opinion the fuselage intake
opening is slightly undersized, and additionally
it would be necessary to ll the fuselage joints
visible inside, so I eventually addressed this
issue with a scratchbuilt FOD guard made
from thin plastic sheet, as that hides the inlet
and makes the smaller front opening less
obvious. The combination of the resin seats
and etched parts resulted in a ne looking
cockpit, but once again it is mandatory to trial
t the cockpit tub with the fuselage as mine
spread out the fuselage a little at the front,
so the side consoles needed to be sanded
down. Next I joined the fuselage halves and
cleaned up the cast exhaust nozzles. This part
eventually became the most difcult step of the
build because its t into the fuselage opening
was not satisfactory. It helped a bit, however,

to reduce the fuselage wall thickness with a

motor tool so that the curvature of the nozzles
obtained a better position inside. I still had to
ll the resulting joint with thicker cyanoacrylate
and then sand it all smooth. The separately
moulded n did not conform to the spine and
needed adjusting with the resulting joint once
again lled with cyanoacrylate. The instrument
panel decking and the front canopy, however,
perfectly matched the fuselage prole at their
chosen positions.
I continued with the wing assembly which
required only a little cleaning up here and there,
then the landing aps were added before I
eventually glued each wing to the fuselage. The
Lightning wing had negative dihedral of -6, so
this needs to be checked and the wing aligned
accordingly. I could not avoid lling at the wing
root, especially underneath. I recommend you
attach the all-moving elevators via a brass pin
because that helps to keep the right 90angle
in relation to the fuselage plus, if you want, you
can deect them slightly to add some interest to
the model. Once all the smaller air intakes and
etched antennas were glued to the fuselage I
airbrushed the kit with base coat of Mr Surfacer
1000 primer and added the rivet lines.
Despite the good selection of markings in
this kit I eventually obtained the Xtradecal
sheet #X72201 EE/BAC Lightning T.4/T.5 Part
2 because it offers the markings of XS419 with
its red stars as a Soviet penetrator during an
air exercise in the mid 1980s. The plane wore

late camouage consisting of Medium Sea Grey

and Barley Grey with visible tonal variation of
some of the fuselage panels and air brakes.
I selected the paints from the GSI Creos Mr
Aqueous Hobby range as follows: H317 with a
touch of blue for Medium Sea Grey and H308
for Barley Grey. Photos of this particular aircraft
clearly show that the right paint demarcation
line was placed approximately on the fuselage
centre axis and not at the bottom as shown
in the Xtradecal instructions. The parts left in
natural metal were oversprayed with Alclad II
Duraluminium and after a coat of gloss varnish
I applied the decals. From the kit I utilized only
the stencils, but I was fully satised with them
as they worked perfectly and did not silver; the
rest of the sheet appears to be of high quality
as well.
More attention and time was needed for the
landing gear assembly, though, especially as far
as the right angles and positions of the auxiliary
struts are concerned, so I recommend that you
work from photographs. Anyway, the complete
gear after adding some brake pipelines looked
very effective and well detailed. I decided to arm
the kit with a single Red Top missile, but the
front control surfaces were too thick, so these
were replaced with new ones cut from 0.13mm
Evergreen sheet. At the end I added the fuel
probe, antennas and the rear canopy, which
was supported with a hydraulic ram scratchbuilt
from Albion Alloys micro tubing, as was the
nose pitot tube.

FINAL VERDICT
This new kit complements the existing single-seat Lightning versions already available in 1:72 and for fans of the type becomes an unavoidable
addition to their collection. The kit is well detailed with well thought out etched and resin parts that are really a bonus from the level of detail point
of view and are not just a useless addition. However, the build itself is not an easy matter of a few sessions, it was a pretty laborious project and
if you want a pure natural metal nish you will have to consider the extra time required to prepare the surface to obtain a reasonable result. The
nished kit is worth the effort, though, and personally Ill be adding the T Mk 4 to my collection as well. Recommended to all determined builders or
modellers with experience of short-run kits.

BIG FIN

This kit was announced last year, and although a set of test shot sprues was on
display on the Revell stand at Telford they were so tucked away it was very easy
to miss them altogether

ortunately I spotted them and

after careful study it looked like
we were in for a treat. Most of
the European kit manufacturers
have had a go at the Tornado in
1:48 scale, and of these Italeris offering
was the best. Revell actually had this kit
in their own range for a few years until
finally deciding to create their own tooling
which makes sense considering they have
already done it in 1:144, 1:72 and 1:32
scales. The other option of course is the
kit by HobbyBoss, which is very nice and
builds very well but it is almost twice the
price of the Revell kit. The question you

will be asking will be Is it another budget

simple kit, though? Well, lets take a
look, shall we. In the usual end-opening
box youll find fourteen sprues, thirteen
grey and one clear. The parts count is
large at over 270. When you consider
that in this first issue of this kit the only
weapons included are a pair of Sidewinder
missiles that is quite an impressive parts
count. One reason for this is that Revell
have taken a different approach to the
breakdown of the airframe to previous
kits enabling them to add certain details
that would otherwise require the use
of expensive slide tooling. The other is

14 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - November 2014

TORNADO.indd 2

03/10/2014 10:14

A pointer towards a future release of an RAF machine is the

inclusion of all the aerials, a Sky Shadow ECM pod and most
of the parts for the GR.1/4 under-nose targeting gear
that this is a very comprehensive kit
which includes a usable cockpit and
the option of open or closed canopy,
landing gear, flaps, slats, spoilers,
airbrakes and thrust reversing buckets.
A pointer toward a future release of
an RAF machine is the inclusion of
all the aerials, a Sky Shadow ECM
pod and most of the parts for the
GR.1/4 under-nose targeting gear. All
of these parts are marked as not for
use, obviously. The surface detail is

all engraved and very fine to the point

where a lot of it doesnt really become
apparent until you add a coat of paint.
Another point worth mentioning is
that this is the first Tornado kit Ive
built that gives you not just full length
exhaust outlets but full length intake
trunking as well. The instructions
are to Revell's usual standard,
comprehensive but complicated,
spread over 94 steps, with the usual
Revell-only paint chart. The decal
sheet covers only the one box art
anniversary scheme, and appears well
printed and usable. Unfortunately the
decal sheet was misplaced between
the preview and my build so I had
to source a replacement set. So as
not to hold up the build I bought the
Printscale Panavia Tornado Part 2
sheet from Hannants that covers RAF
aircraft from Operation Telic 2003. The

reasoning behind this sheet in particular

was that it included all the stencilling for the
airframe and most of the stores. So, how
does it build?
The instructions would have you start with
the ejector seats so obviously these were
ignored for now with the build starting with
the cockpit. This is pretty well detailed so
nothing was added here apart from some
paint, in this case Gunze-Sangyo H308 Grey
FS36375 overall. Because of the lack of decals
I had to paint everything so working from
some reference the details were picked out
with Games Workshop acrylics and a White
Karisma pencil for the switches. Step 3 has
you opening a few holes in the lower fuselage.
This is ne if you are building a stock German
aircraft but as I was building it as an RAF GR
Mk 4 a good study of the references showed
me which, where and where not to drill.
With the cockpit sorted next to go on are the
undercarriage bays and the intake trunking.
As the intake trunking is pale grey I got away
with leaving them in the bare plastic. Assembly
moves onto the fuselage now and time for a
word or two of advice. The breakdown of the
fuselage is quite complex so before committing
to glue, test t everything and adjust where
needed. It does all go together with very little
in the way of ller needed, just be patient with
it. With the lower fuselage built up we move
onto the wings. Here you need to make a

few decisions about optional positions for the

aps etc. I built mine with everything open
but before sticking anything together the
parts were test tted in the closed positions
and it all seems to t nicely. If like me you
decide to have everything dropped it's time
for another case of patience. In this case its
because there are a lot of small, delicate parts
involved. The wings are then dropped into
position and the top of the fuselage added
along with the intakes. While the rest of the
airframe sets solid we turn to the rear end with
the tailplanes, n and jet pipes. The optional
thrust reversing buckets make this area quite
busy but as you can see it does all t very
well. The nosecone had some weight xed
into it and then it was added to the fuselage.
The scheme I had chosen is for an RAF
machine ying in Iraq during Operation Telic.
These aircraft were sprayed with an overall
temporary nish of Barley Grey so before I
reached for the paint all the pylons, doors
and drop tanks were prepared and mounted
ready for spraying. With the cockpit masked
and the compressor red up on went a couple
of coats of Gunze-Sangyo H334 Barley Grey
BS4800 18B21. When that had dried the
wheel bays were masked and along with the
undercarriage parts and door inner faces
were sprayed H338 Light Grey FS36495. The
bare metal parts of the airframe were brush
painted with Games Workshop Chainmail and

Boltgun Metal acrylics. The main paintwork

was nished with a coat of H331 Dark Sea
Grey on the radome. A coat of Johnson's Klear
overall sealed everything up and prepared the
surface for the decals. The Printscale decals
worked well but great care was needed as
they are very thin. A touch of Micro Set and
Sol bedded them all down well. A wash of grey
acrylic ink made all the surface detail pop out
along with a dusting of thinned Tamiya X-19
Smoke around the hot parts and up the n.
The undercarriage bays and legs were given
a wash of MIG Productions Dark Wash tidied
up with odourless thinners. While everything
dried fully the ejector seats were built up and
painted. The basic harness is moulded into the
cushions but in reality these are quite busy so
a raid of the photo-etch spares box turned up
a set of Eduard Hawk belts. As they both use
the Martin Baker Mk 10 seats, on these went.
I now had a painted and decaled airframe
and large pile of parts so it was time to put
it all together. With everything on except the
canopy and screen the whole model was given
a coat of H20 Flat Clear rather than my usual
satin nish. Being a temporary nish it lost its
sheen and got grubby very quickly. Getting
close to the nish line the screen and canopy
were added leaving just the various lights and
beacons to complete the build.

FINAL VERDICT
So, now its built what do I think? If you want a simple, quick build go for the Italeri kit. If you want something that builds like Lego, its HobbyBoss
all the way. If you want a comprehensive, well-detailed model more or less from the box, this is it. Its not an easy build by any means but
with patience its the best 1:48 scale Tornado out there. The added bonus is the price as it is currently among the cheapest so the cost of the
aftermarket stuff is more justiable. Although I wasnt able to use the kit decals for the purpose of this review I feel the scheme I chose actually
shows the detail better than the multi-coloured kit scheme would. Well done Revell, another winner as far as Im concerned.
Was it worth the effort?
Denitely. Would I build another? Denitely.

Avia S-199 in Israeli Air Force Service 1948-1950 by

A. Yofe & L. Nyveen (White Crow Publications 2007
ISBN: 0-9774627-1-4)

Built & Written by Libor Jekl from the Czech Republic

THE MULE

Kovozavody Prostejov (KP, later KoPro) was a brand that produced traditional
plastic models since 1962, however from the mid-1990s it tended to focus only
on re-issues and in more recent times the original tools have been leased to
other firms. Anyway, thanks to the activities of AZ Model the KP brand is back
once again on the modelling scene, but thats where the similarities with the
original products end.

ll of the kits now labelled under

this brand are completely new
toolings, having nothing to do
with the older kits, and the
new Avia S-199 released in
either Czechoslovak or Israeli markings
is no exception. The latter kit is the one
I am building here and in keeping with
KPs traditional look, the box layout is
prevailingly red and yellow inside which
are three sprues containing almost 100
parts. Two sprues we already know from
the previously-released Bf 109G kits
from AZ Model (see Issue 103), although
this time a light grey-coloured plastic is
used instead of tan, and there is a new

sprue featuring the specific S-199 parts.

Therefore for the most part what has
already been said about the Bf 109G kits
still applies here and that means that it
is well moulded with extremely fine panel
lines and surface detail but there are no
locating pins on any of the parts; this did
not prove an issue as the fit of major parts
was really outstanding. Newly moulded are
the fuselage halves, propeller with spinner,
gun covers plus a few smaller parts for
the cockpit; all done to the high standard
we have recently come to expect from AZ
Model. However, with the Israeli Air Force
version I would have liked to see the
inclusion of the bomb rack that was often

18 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - November 2014

Here you can see the gap

and also wheels with smooth
tyres (hopefully these may still
appear in future reissues or via
the aftermarket?). The singlepiece canopy (Erla type) is
cleanly moulded without visible
distortion and has finely defined
framing. The instructions,
which have a nice layout and
are in full-colour, seemed to be
sufficient at a first glance but the
build revealed many omissions
and misleading information
(more on this later). The
camouflage scheme depicts two
machines from No.101 Tasejet
in overall light grey/green dating
from 1948, and an example in
brown-green camouflage over
light blue undersides from a
military exhibition in 1950.
The build commences with the
cockpit assembly, which offers a
good number of parts and nice
sidewall detail. The interior of Avia
was not like wartime Bf 109s as it
was sprayed in a blue-grey colour
that approximately corresponds
to GSI Creos (Gunze-Sangyo)
Aqueous H337 Bluish Grey; all

the smaller details such as the

trim wheel, throttle box and control
stick were brush painted with
Vallejo acrylics. Despite the closed
canopy that the kit provides there
is enough light on the interior
and with the lighter colour used
this further accentuates things,
so careful brush painting paid
dividends here. The instructions
do not show the position of the
gunsight, but as with the Bf 109,
it was set slightly off to starboard.
The seat belts I cut from Tamiya
tape and painting a light beige
colour while the instrument panel
was again brush painted and then
gently drybrushed with white oil
paint. The interior assembly tted
into the fuselage with negligible
trimming on the instrument panel
edge and the halves could then
be joined. The upper gun cowling
insert was glued in place, however
there are just plain openings with
no provision for mounting the gun
barrels, so I cut sockets to take
2.5mm brass tubing into which the
barrels were later attached. The n
required a little trimming too, but
once the joint lines were levelled

You can see the

slight gap at the
leading edge of the
starboard wing root;
all this needed was
a little filler

Overall fit is very

good, but those
bulges on the nose
look just too big?

Even before the overall

scheme is applied, the lighter
interior shade used in the
S-199 does help to make this
area much more visible than
the wartime Bf 109 series

KWIK BUILD
SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

I replaced the wheels with those

that had smooth tyres from a Revell
Bf 109G-10 kit

with at sanding sticks it matched the fuselage

without trouble.
Onto the wing now, I assembled the radiator
interiors and glued the halves together. The
large wheel bay doors perfectly matched the
wing surface and the joint was secured with
only a small amount of extra thin cement.
Nice features include the separately moulded
bottom radiator aps, which I recommend you
glue in at the end of the build as they could
be easily broken off. Despite the trial tting at
the beginning of the build that showed almost
awless t between the fuselage and the
wing, the installed cockpit interior and wing
radiator interiors probably caused a slight
displacement, so the resulting gap at the port
wing root was sorted out with a thin wedge of
plastic sheet, while that on the starboard side
was easily corrected with a smear of ller.
Now for the confusion with the instructions, to
overcome this I recommend you check your
references, or ideally photographs of the real
thing. While the elevator part numbers 50
and 51 are shown in the sprue layout as not
for use, they should be installed. Similarly,
the tailwheel with canvas cover is shown
whereas the other type (#23) should be used
instead. The instructions state that all these
details and other optional parts such as the
head armours, cowling bulges and drop tanks
depend on the selected camouage option,

but the drawing is not very informative and

does not help. Additionally, the building parts
of the instructions are common with the other
version, which uses a different canopy and
other specic parts and this is again a source
of confusion. Anyway, I continued with the
canopy that needed trimming at the bottom
edge as both front and rear parts exceeded the
fuselage aperture and I eventually used ller to
smooth out the joint to the spine. The positions
of the prominent gun breech bulges are not
precisely shown either, but here you can follow
the fuselage panel lines. The manufacturer
tried to correctly depict the metal seal that ran
across the bulge and this is therefore slightly
raised but I feel this detail looks soft and
unconvincing. In my opinion the bulges seems
to be slightly oversized because the one on the
starboard side almost touches the compressor
intake, while on the real aircraft quite a gap
can be observed. In the fuselage underside
the original Bf 109 spent ammo chutes needed
lling with a piece of scrap plastic and then
the primer could be applied. This time I did not
attempt to rivet the built model because the
Avias surface was lled and sanded smooth;
actually, even the panel lines in the fuselage
rear part were lled in as well.
The Israeli machines wore the original Avia
production colour that was similar to German
RLM 02 and so the instructions suggest

you use the corresponding shades with the

Humbrol or Agama paint ranges. I went for
my own mix of GSI Creos (Gunze-Sangyo)
Aqueous H70 RLM 02 with 20% white and
touch of rich blue. The surface was then
slightly post-shaded with a darker colour
and weathered with a dust overspray on the
fuselage lower sides (H318). The decals
are printed by BOA Agency and worked on
a gloss surface well without any need for
decal solutions and they appeared to have
perfect register and nice colours. However,
the instructions showed certain errors in the
proportions of the marking, such as the wing
underside roundels are almost twice as big as
those on the decal sheet. I had trouble tting
the No.101 Tasejet emblem on the limited
space on the front fuselage as well.
The correct position of the landing gear
legs is xed via tapered pins and I replaced
the wheels with those that had smooth tyres
from a Revell Bf 109G-10 kit. The DF loop
on the spine I scratchbuilt from thin copper
wire, then I attached the antenna mast onto
which I secured a wire cut from Uschi van den
Rosten superne thread. At the end I added
the propeller unit, installed the machine gun
barrels and replaced the wing cannon with
Albion Alloys ne tubing.

FINAL VERDICT
This new kit successfully follows up the previous Bf 109G kits released under the AZ Model label and sets the bar pretty high for the re-established
KP brand. The kit is not without faults though, especially the instructions, which are the obvious weak point and the manufacturer should consider
doing them in more user-friendly fashion. Otherwise this is a quality kit that I believe has the potential to re-establish the traditional KP brand in the
market and send the old and tired original S-199 tooling for well-earned retirement.

AFTER COUNTLESS SPITFIRE MODELS OVER THE YEARS,
THE PROTOTYPE OF THIS FAMOUS AIRCRAFT SEEMS
TO REMAIN THE ONE THAT IS FORGOTTEN, MAYBE
BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE THE APPEAL OF A COMBAT
AIRCRAFT OR IS JUST NOT ATTRACTIVE ENOUGH FOR
MODELLERS? IN MY OPINION THE PROTOTYPE IS THE
MOST ELEGANT MODEL OF AN AIRCRAFT THANKS TO
THE PURITY OF ITS LINES AND ITS SIMPLE PAINT SCHEME
THAT FURTHER ENHANCES THE SILHOUETTE.

lleyCat has provided modellers

like me with a gorgeous kit
that is finely crafted entirely in
resin. The parts of the kit are
well made without imperfections
such as air bubbles disturbing the surface
and with a fairly good fit considering the
composition of the parts. The kit in my
opinion is fantastic with the opportunity to
build the type in one of several schemes
and configurations that the prototype
underwent as it developed during flight
testing. To be honest, the real problem

in my case was actually choosing which

version to make. AlleyCat offer several
different parts such as the cowling/nose,
exhausts, propellers and windshield; the
latter I must say, although of resin, is of
excellent clarity. Another detail that I really
liked was the fact that the fuselage is cast
as one piece, so it saved me a lot of work
joining two halves together but has the
disadvantage that the sides of the cockpit
interior have to be painted within the narrow
confines of the fuselage width. Working in
these conditions the painting, although not

very complicated, tends to be a little more

laborious. Like the fuselage, the wings are
made as one piece, which saves a lot of
time and components in comparison with
the usual way of approaching this element
in a kit, and it also reduces the amount of
sanding and filling required, as well as the
actual chances of misalignment occurring
in the first place. As you can see, the part
number is minimal but this makes it quick
and easy to make. The cockpit interior parts
such as the seat frame and the seat itself,
instrument panel and control column all

The interior is limited to the three elements you can see here, plus the detail moulded into the
fuselage. Overall detail is very good and all components will benefit from careful painting

All the interior parts carefully painted using a mix of colours with high- and low-lights achieved
with washes

Assembly is that quick, honestly, the limited number of

main components goes a long way to making this one

I especially like the moulded-on harness in
the seat because such detail goes a long
way to enhance the interior, which can
be further improved with careful painting,
washes and other effects. Obviously you
have to sand some of the parts to get a
good fit within the (thick) resin fuselage,
but the work is small in comparison with
converting a plastic kit with resin parts
With the interior nished and the correct
nose in place for the version I wanted to do,
which in this case is for the very rst option,
I proceeded to glue the wings in place. Here
there are some t problems, but truthfully they
are no better or worse than any other model

enamel paint range because it is tough enough to

The engine cowlings were highly polished aluminium at this stage, so they

on the market made from injected plastic and
personally, when sanding and replacing the
surface detail, I actually prefer working with
resin. Thankfully the separate elevators and
rudder have a good t with the fuselage. I do
recommend that you study the instructions
very carefully before you start any assembly,
though, as there are various minor changes
for each stage of the prototype's life that
are depicted in this kit and any oversight by
the builder could lead to mistakes that only
become apparent once the model is nished.

The last parts I added were the clear ones,

and I opted to pose them in the closed position
because I did not think they would t well open
which would disturb the smooth lines of the
airframe. Be careful not to damage or scratch
the surfaces of these clear parts, although with
care any mishap that may occur can be ground
and polished out, then sealed with a coat of a
suitable varnish (e.g. Johnsons Klear)
At this point, with the model fully assembled,
I went over it with very ne grade sandpaper
to ensure that all the joints of the major parts

matched and to deal with the orange peel

effect that is common in resin kits. This session
helped me to ensure that everything was
smooth and all joints secure before I nalised
everything by rescribing some lost panel lines
and adding rivets.

Paint

Using Tamiya masking tape I could mask

up all the transparent parts and start the
painting phase. The scheme for the prototype
that I chose had a kind of varnish with a

The same process is used for the undersides

The finished effect

transparent greenish-yellow tint to it

over the natural metal airframe. To start I
applied a layer of aluminium overall using
Tamiya X-11 enamel paint, which is hard
and thick enough to deal with any slight
imperfections in the resin parts and to
withstand subsequent masking. To create
the effect of the almost transparent primer,
after much thought I decided to mix the
greenish-yellow using Tamiya XF-4 with
95% alcohol or solvent. This would be
applied over the entire surface of the
model, adding more layers in some panels

The propeller is added, along

with the tailskid, both of which
are also painted aluminium

because in photos there are certain ones

that look darker and that in turn gives the
model more variety to what could be a very
bland scheme.
With a soft 2B pencil all the panel lines
were highlighted, then the whole process
was sealed with a layer of gloss varnish
that would form the basis for applying the
decals. The kit decals are excellent and
once thoroughly dry I applied a coat of gloss
varnish and removed all the masking, then
it was time to nish the model by adding all
the small parts.

Final Details

The decals are superb and

add the extra bit of vintage
colour to the type

I decided to start with the landing gear,

which being made of resin and in this
small-ish scale you would expected to be
very fragile, but AlleyCat have solved this
by casting a length of copper wire within
the oleo legs to give rigidity to them. In
this case, the prototype did not have any
undercarriage doors tted, so I put those

A dark wash is applied with
a fine brush along the panel
lines bisected by the decals

and that helps to blend them

into the overall scheme instead of
their being stuck on top

in the kit aside for potential use in another

project. The wheels, as with the rest of the
kit, have great quality, however my model
was missing one, but a quick call to the
manufacturer saw replacement parts winging
their way to me quickly and for free - well done
AlleyCat, superb customer service. The nal

job was to attach all the pieces such as the

landing gear, wheels, tailskid (you also get
the tailwheel in the kit so you can build it
later in its life) and to paint and install the
two-blade wooden propeller.

With the model now complete I was very

taken with the transparent green and yellow
colours over the metallic base, as well as
the other details unique to this airframe such
as the lack of undercarriage doors and the
tailskid, all of which give a very vintage air to
a type that was so advanced at that time.

FINAL VERDICT
Given its competitive price, quality and ease of building this is a resin kit that anyone can build. I enjoyed it so much that I will be purchasing
another copy soon to complete my collection of Spitres of all ages.

K, so we all know that it fell

never living up to its potential
and it was beset by all sorts of
problems due to being rushed
into service, but whats not to love about
this thing? Its twin-engined, single-seat,
massively armed and was a real hoot to fly,
apparently. Not so good against the more

nimble single-engined aircraft but what

a great strike aircraft it could have been
and what a great subject for modellers.
The Classic Airframes version of it is the
most well known in this scale, with Special
Hobby making the best of it in 1:72, so its
really great to have a new one in modern

what Im about to tell you is nothing short

of heroically bad that it defies belief. Harsh

the idea of just how disappointed I am with
this kit. Now dont get me wrong, Im not
knocking Trumpeter, because that company

The vertical tail is too tall, too pointy and has a

is also backwards slanting instead of vertical, the
bullet is too skinny and too pointed and theres
no aerial lead in clear Perspex. Not a good start

The wings are no better, being too big in chord and span, there are no raised reinforcing strips and
the back edge of the fuel cell seems to be lifted up for some reason and there are only two filler
caps on show instead of the four on the real thing

The wing leading edge has the wrong profile, with the angle a little too shallow

Modified area shown in black again. Theres not much room to play
with here, as the plastic is quite thin

Thats the modified wing, better but not perfect, itll have to do

Modifications marked in black: rounding

off the tip, rescribing the rudder hinge and
trimming back that trailing edge

The reinforcing strips need to be added to both top and

bottom wing halves

The engine nacelle is nearly there but not quite. Its a little too short and the
trailing edge has the wrong contour, so does the hinge line for the flaps

Tiny adjustment at the back end gives it a better shape

Construction starts with the cockpit and

the detail thats included is nicely done. The
instrument panel is reasonably accurate even
though the decal for it is horrible. The missing
parts are: the throttle quadrant and elevator
trim wheel on the left, with the compass and

ap control levers (early version) on the right.

Worst of all, of course, is the complete lack
of a gunsight and the roll-over bar for behind
the seat (such an obvious pair of bits). The
canopies are nicely clear and t well, even
though the knock-out panel is also missing,

and if you do the early version the aerial mast

sits on the back of the canopy and not on the
nose. The plastic parts t very neatly and its
certainly an easy kit to build with no vices
whatsoever. All the joint lines are free from any
serious amounts of ller and the t of major
sub-assemblies such as the wings is excellent.
The problem comes when you begin to get
bogged down in trying to sort out just about
every single bit that you t. You can see from
the accompanying images the things are pretty
bad on the shape/accuracy front, and it must
be bad for me to make such a fuss over it. All
scale kits have inaccuracies, its the nature of
the scaling process, but when it comes down
to just about every bit being wrong to some
degree, thats where I draw the line. Im not
much for rivet counting but Id like at least
some of it to be right. This article seems to be
one long moan about it all and to be honest,
Id run out of patience and love for this kit
on the very rst day of the build when I fully
realised how inaccurate it is. So maybe I am
being a bit harsh but its really difcult to be
subjective when you get your hopes up, only
to have them dashed against the hard plastic
of reality. How poetic, but Im really struggling

There are two versions in the kit and both are

classic RAF early and late schemes, in green/
brown and green/grey respectively. As the
kit decals are unusable I begged the set of
markings from the Classic Airframes Whirlwind
kit from a mate of mine (thanks, Simon).
Luckily he wants to do the early scheme so I
got to do the classic Dieppe raid one with the
white nose and wing bands. Humbrol 30 for the

The classic RAF colours are instantly recognisable; the Sky band is just so British

striping it was looking neat. The temporary

raid markings were heavily chipped
and scuffed up, while the rest of
the paint got some panels of
lightened versions of the
base colours as well as
the usual paint chips and

The Dieppe Raid special markings can be applied in just about any standard from pristine to
pretty mucked up. Mine heads for the mucked-up end of the scale every time

line accentuation. I opted to do it a bit dirty

and unloved looking because by this time of
the war, the Whirlwind was getting perilously
close to its demise and replacement as a
frontline ghter. All of that was then sealed in
under Humbrol Clear and we were ready for
the decals.
The sheet in the Classic Airframes kit was

produced by Microscale, so its very nice and

works well too. They respond well to their own
brand setting solutions and settle down nicely
for minimum silvering. The only kit decals I
used were the upper wing roundels as there
was only one set on my alternative sheet. I
modied the kit roundels by scrubbing them

multiple coats of Tamiya Smoke to darken the

colours and reduce their contrast. This seemed
to work well enough so no real
complaints there.

Final Details

After that it was a litany of modication of

kit parts to get some of the details right.

These included adding the undercarriage
legs prominent lifting lugs, the gun barrels
with recoil buffer springs, bomb rack details
and replacement of the square section sway
braces, addition of 500lb bombs from an old
Hasegawa Typhoon kit and scraping 90%

of the raised detail from the inside of the

undercarriage doors.
At least with the paint and markings on it
was beginning to look OK and the nal XDFF
at varnish nish toned it all down, needing
only some detail painting and the multiple
aerial wires to make it complete.

FINAL VERDICT
This kit has problems. Problems with sizes, shapes, panel lines, spurious details and worst of all, missing details that should so obviously be
incorporated, that it cannot be good enough. I mean, come on, no gunsight? Really? This could be acceptable if the kit was an easy assembly
version aimed at the beginner/youngster and was priced accordingly, but we all know that it isnt and it costs nearly 30!
If all you need is a fair representation of the basic shape of the Westland machine then this kit is ne but if you want any kind of accuracy with it
then youll have a lot of work to do. All of this means that even though its getting rarer and more and more expensive, the Classic Airframes kit is
still the Whirlwind kit of choice in this scale.
Worth the effort?
Sadly, not even close.

Having covered the 1:72 version of this model in 2007,

ICM have finally offered us a new tooling of the type
in 1:48. Knowing how historically popular Luftwaffe
subjects are, this seemed to be a good choice with it
seemingly being warmly welcomed when revealed.

he big question on which it

would be judged would have to
be whether some of the niggle
issues concerning general parts
fit and glazing component clarity
on the smaller version had been now
addressed with its big brother. A quick peep
at the new glazing revealed crisp, crystal
clear parts with nice sharp framing; always

welcome and a big bonus when the time

comes for the dreaded masking! The plastic
components were nicely engraved with
good surface detail with quite bold panel
lines, which will be most welcoming to a
good old fashioned weathering wash. Two
basic engine units are provided coupled
with removable engine cowls for those
wishing to spice up the build. So far it was

very impressive and coupled with what

looked like detailed subsections, would
surely provide the right criteria for a good
model. All that was now needed was userfriendly assembly

Interior

It is always a good start to see a well catered

for cockpit area as it usually means that this

rich vein of detail will run through

the whole model. Well, we would
have to wait before we could
conrm that, but quite obviously
the cockpit area was crammed
with parts replicating all the major
components such as radio and
camera equipment with all the
aircrew stations and gun positions
nicely covered. Since this whole
area will be very visible through the
extensive front glazing, all effort put
into this section will not be wasted.
In fact, I was so impressed by the
layout that I chose to add a bit
more to the look by gluing in some
ne wire sections here and there,
to replicate the mass of wiring that
lined the walls of the cockpit. These
would be painted yellow and would
provide a splash of colour visible
through the glazing. Incidentally, the
colour call-outs in the instructions
include the ofcial German RLM

names and numbers, which does

help the modeller match the colours
when using their preferred model
paint range. The assembled parts
were sprayed with what would have
been RLM 02 Grau, the standard
interior colour for these early war
machines, with some thinned white
sprayed in for highlights along the
faces of the control boxes. When
this had dried, a dark grey oil wash
was allowed to work its way around
the units to provide shadows and
depth and help lift the detail. I didnt
worry about being too subtle with
the effect as what I was after was
a high contrast between light and
dark areas, which at this point could
seem too stark but when viewed
through the glazing would be
visibly toned down and balanced.
The two-piece instrument panel
has plain raised dials onto which a
decal could be added. I would have

preferred raised dial faces that could have

the face detail drybrushed, but to be blunt,
the decals were simple at best and just about
bedded down onto to the dials to provide a
passable but very lacklustre effect. To round off
the sequence, the detail painting was added
with a ne tipped brush and the seats were
treated to some seat belts from the spares
box. Overall the completed cockpit had come
together well and was looking very impressive.
Moving past the cockpit, the mid-section of
the fuselage has all the bomb bay bulkheads,
rack structures with bombs and the fuel tank
all squeezed into the bomb bay. You are also
provided with optional open or closed bay
doors to allow you to show off all that lovely
detail if you so choose.

Assembly

There was a lot going on in that interior so I

was a bit worried as to how well the fuselage
would come together, considering that the
big slab of a top wing would also have to slot
neatly across the top of the fuselage. The
fuselage halves aligned perfectly and a few
dry runs showed that the assembled wing was
also going to be a good t, but would need a
bit of a tidy-up at the top front and rear panel
lines where the fuselage kissed the wing. A
little bit of ller was just needed to level up
these joints and the panel lines here were
rescribed along the ller to provide a crisp

look to the top decking. The engine nacelles

incorporate provision for the optional open
engine covers along with all the undercarriage
bay detail so the sub-assemblies look quite

complex, but in reality build up very easily

requiring just a little ller on the joints around
the oil cooler lower panels. I have a few bad
memories of past builds where the nacelle-

to-wing joints had been a weak point in the

kit requiring lling and correction, but not in
this case, ICM have got it right and the t was
commendable. The undercarriage assembly
was also sturdy with good detail and t but with
un- weighted tyres, so I attened these myself.
I wanted to leave one engine panel open to
show off one of the engine units and to keep
the other engine bay closed up to highlight
the lines of the aircraft. The version depicted
by the model, was powered by the liquidcooled DB601A which, being inline, provided
that distinctive sleeker look as opposed to
the radial powered versions seen later in the
Battle of Britain. Two engine units are provided

that provide the basis for further detailing if

you so desire, but even then are not too bad
straight from the box. I didnt go the whole hog
with extra detail but added a little more to my
exposed engine by gluing in a few cooling and
breather pipes made from lead wire to improve
the nal look. Painted up and weathered with
an oil wash and paint chips the visible unit
provides an additional point of interest on
the model.
The glazing is an integral part of the lower,
front fuselage and camera bay, and some of
the airframe parts used here are clear plastic
so that the relevant glazed portions can
be masked off. Care must be taken so that

the joints at the clear parts can be blended

smoothly into the airframe without spoiling
their clarity. All of the upper and lower glazing
sections revealed good t but before nal
gluing, I had to make a decision about the
machine-guns sticking out at all angles from
the cockpit. They had to be glued from within
the glazing but as such would pose a problem
by getting in the way during the masking later
on. To get around this, the protruding barrels
were sliced off to simplify the masking process.
These would then be glued back after painting
and removal of the masking, taking care to
align them properly. The glazed sectors were
quite extensive and required some care and, at

a quick and effective way to do the masking
was to stick Tamiya Tape across the clear

Two of these options, one of which I chose,
also included some unusual green mottles
on the sides and looked attractive and very
different from the standard bomber nishes

work and which allowed a quick check up
on the sharpness of that work. Satised with
that, some pre-shading of the underside with
thinned NATO Black was carried out. I didnt
bother pre-shading the upper sides as I have
found in the past that the shading is easily
lost and not as effective under dark colours.

The wash can be smeared for weathering effects

To kick off, the yellow tail band marking was

sprayed on and masked up, safe for now. First
acrylic camouage colour to go on was the
underside blue, being applied in light passes
of much thinned paint to allow the pre-shading
to show through. When dry these areas were
masked off before the lighter of the two greens
was sprayed on freehand roughly following

the scheme, again with thinned down paint.

The shading effects around the panel lines
were simply enhanced by a couple of extra
passes of the airbrush along these lines. The
splinter scheme could now be marked out with
strategically placed tape masks before the nal
black-green was applied in a similar light coat
fashion to the other colours. It was then time

to remove and discard the masking and make

a mental note to restock my depleted masking
tape stash. The mottle was airbrushed on
freehand before a blanket coat of acrylic clear
gloss was applied in readiness for the decaling
and oil wash stages to come.

Decal Woes

On rst impressions the decal sheet looked

OK with good register. Swastikas were not
included but you do get some stencilling. I
didnt like the look of the large areas of carrier
lm around the code letters and decided to
trim these away before applying the codes.
My heart sank when the rst of the large
wing crosses cracked up as I was positioning
it. Being a bit more cautious, I managed to
get the upper wing crosses on well enough
but just as it looked like the sun was going
to shine after all, the codes and fuselage
crosses collapsed and spoilt the outlook

Pastel dust effects are brushed in

again. I added the crosses and swastikas from

my spares box but had to persevere and do
some jigsaw repairs on the codes. I sealed
in my hard earned work with another gloss
coat before quickly moving on to my oil wash,
which consists of tube oil paint thinned with
Humbrol Enamel Thinners. A light grey shade
was used for the undersides and a stronger
dark grey-brown shade for the topside. I like
to use oils for this stage as they can provide
some interesting weathering effects depending
on how much of the excess wash you choose
to remove. Smears, air-ow stains and
shadowing can all be incorporated into the
nish by simply manipulating the extent of the
clean-up of the oil paint from the panel lines
using cloth or cotton buds as wipes.

Final Touches

Before the nal weathering was started,

Tamiya acrylic matt varnish was applied to

give the nal nishing look and blend in all the

other stages. I also like to have a matt base
for the pastel dust weathering, nding that it
supplies the surface grip and adhesion that
helps the method. Some MIG pigments black
smoke dust was worked into the engine outlet
grills and exhaust stacks and brown/black
dust was lightly brushed into the little nooks
and crevices around the engine panels. The
exhaust stains were sprayed in behind the
outlets with a mix of greys followed with a dirty
brown/black mix. Dark grey and silver paint
chipping was touched in around the front of the
wings, airframe and engines with watercolour
pencils to give an overall well weathered look
to the aircraft. These watercolour pencils are
very versatile as the effects can be left sharp
or diffused with a moist cotton-bud. With the
cockpit masking removed, the aerial was
nally added from stretched elastic.

FINAL VERDICT
Overall this was a most enjoyable build resulting in a model that moved along effortlessly and looked good at the nish line. The only
disappointment for me was the trip-up with the decals, which I found were very poor. The overriding big plus was the good build t coupled with the
lovely detail throughout. Hopefully we will be treated to the radial engine versions too.
Was it worth the effort?
Very much in build, great on price too.

Built & Written by Alan Price from the UK

Amazingly, Eduards 1:32 Bf 109E-1 came onto the market some

five years ago and it featured for the first time in MAI Issue 49.
Steve Evans built the kit straight from the box and found it to be a
very nice build indeed. In the intervening four years we have had
the Trumpeter and Dragon examples. I purchased this kit as soon
as it was released and had been waiting for a chance to build it.
When the Editor asked me what my top kits were for the 100th
edition, this was my number one choice. The Battle of Britain
period is without doubt my favourite period for modelling and this
kit is an excellent representation of one of the key players.

ot wanting to repeat
Steves article, my build
is not quite straight from
the box and I wanted a
closed-up version, no
engine on show here. I had already
sourced some Quickboost resin
exhaust and Aires Resin wheels
because the Eduard individual
stack exhausts are good but these
Quickboost ones are very nice
and a lot easier to fit. The Aires

wheels are a worthwhile upgrade

as the kit wheels are one of its few
weak areas. For decals, I turned to
EagleCals and found a very colourful
set of markings from the fall of
France period, just prior to the Battle
of Britain.
So, with everything in place and
just a few weeks to build the kit, it was
time to get cracking. First off was the
cockpit, and this being the ProPACK
version, Eduard provided lots of nice

photo-etch. I made a few additions, some

pipework and wiring evident in photos was
added from lead wire. Gunze Sangyo H070
RLM 02 is the colour for the interior and I
applied a dark brown wash to this which works
well on RLM 02. With the cockpit dealt with,
attention turned to the oil cooler. Though
Eduard provide photo-etch parts for the grills,
the sides of the inlet and exhaust for the cooler
are missing. Both the Dragon and Trumpeter
kits make a better job of this (though the shape
of the Trumpeter one is all wrong). A bit of
scratchbuilding was called for and the sides
were built up with plasticard before gluing
the fuselage halves together and then gluing
the oil cooler in place. The result looked a
lot better and matched the photos of the real
aircraft. The fuselage seams were cleaned

up, plenty of Mr Surfacer was needed on the

underside of the nose, and any lost detail was
re-scribed.
The wings posed little problem, thanks
to the clever way Eduard split the top and
bottom, there is only a small area of seam

along the front to clean up. The slats were

glued closed, as they normally would be on
the ground. Attaching the wing to the fuselage
needed a bit of care, the join at the rear can
end up being pushed in too far, but a bit of
careful trimming here and there ensured that

Stage-by-Stage - Construction

The cockpit is nicely detailed with plenty of photo-etch. I added a few extra details with lead wire

The sides of the oil cooler were built up with plasticard; if this
isnt done then its possible to look up into the open engine
area above

There was more lead wire used on the starboard side of the cockpit and this dressed up the
sidewall nicely

There were some sink marks on the wings of my kit and these
were dealt with using some Mr Surfacer

The wings are a good fit but do need carefully taping

up to ensure the dihedral is correct

First off was the cockpit, and this being the ProfiPACK version,
Eduard provided lots of nice photo-etch

Copious amounts of Mr Surfacer were applied round the oil

cooler to ensure a nice smooth finish

the front tted well and this helped align the

rear seam. The wings needed careful taping
up to get the dihedral correct but the t is good
and apart from some Mr Surfacer on the rear
seam, there was little clean-up needed. The
tail surfaces went on next; these have support
struts so they should attach perfectly square,
but this proved not to be the case, they point
down very slightly when viewed against a
straight edge. This is not really visible on
the nished kit so its probably not worth
worrying about.
With the addition of all the control surfaces,
amazingly, it was almost time for paint. So far
it had taken just over two weeks elapsed time
and about 20 hours work to get to this point,
which for me, someone not really known for
building quickly, was a miracle! The airframe
was next polished with 3600 Micro-mesh
then the canopy front and rear sections were
attached. The kit-provided masks were used
on the canopy and the rest of the interior
was masked off, as were the wheel wells and
radiator openings.
The rst coat of paint was a base coat of
Mr Surfacer 1000 from a spray can. Once
dry, this was polished with 3600 Micro-mesh
used wet, leaving an incredibly smooth nish.
The surface detail is so ne that the Mr
Surfacer can ll it in if used heavily, I had to
re-rivet a couple of small areas where this had
happened. A pre-shade with black followed

48 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - November 2014

BF109E.indd 4

03/10/2014 10:23

next. Pre-shading
seems to have taken a
bit of a bashing recently
but if used carefully it can
deliver a very pleasing
result. I have to also add
that walking down the ight
line at work, our stateof-the-art jet ghters
certainly do look like
they have been preshaded in places,
particularly round the
engines and removable
hatches. I always paint
the lightest colours rst so
the underside colour of RLM 65 was
airbrushed rst. Using Gunze Sangyo H067
RLM 65, the underside and the fuselage
sides were all airbrushed using a fairly thin
mix until the pre-shading was just showing.
After 24 hours the RLM 65 was masked off in
preparation for the high demarcation RLM 02/
RLM 71 upper surfaces. The RLM 02 went
on rst, just on the areas requiring the colour.
The Gunze Sangyo H064 RLM 71 was then
airbrushed on freehand giving a soft edge to
the demarcation between the colours, which
seems to have been usual on these aircraft.
After removing all the masking, I then
left the build for another 24 hours before
returning to make any adjustments. I decided
the underside needed a bit more blue, the
pre-shading was too prominent and the upper

camouage needed a little tidying up, rening

the edges here and there and increasing
the paint density in places. Happy with the
nished effect, the next job was to gloss with
Microscale Micro Gloss ready for the decals.
I chose a very colourful scheme form
EagleCals sheet EC#121, Red 16 of Oblt. Fritz
Losigkeit from 2.JG26. The EagleCals decals
went on very nicely over two sessions with
them settling down into the surface detail using
Microscale setting solutions. The next stage
was to seal the decals with another coat of
Microscale Micro Gloss ready for a pin wash.
I used Flory Models Black and Dark Dirt for

the wash, applying all over with a big brush

then wiping off once dry with kitchen towel
used dry or with just the slightest dampening
from a drop and I mean a drop of water. If
you use too much water it will just lift the wash
right out of the ne details. I then went over
all the access panels with thinned Humbrol
Black 33 to give a stronger outline to these
areas. Exhaust stains were added using well
thinned Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black before a
coat of Microscale Micro Flat was airbrushed
on, and I then started to add the nal parts.
The undercarriage had already been painted
but I now added the brake hoses which were

The wing-to-fuselage join underneath is tricky and needed quite

a bit of Mr Surfacer and then quite a bit of work rescribing lost
detail

The oil cooler has now been added along with the exhausts;
the area needs to be airbrushed with RLM 65 before adding the
painted exhaust because it wont be possible to paint with the
exhausts in place

The completed oil cooler is airbrushed with RLM 65 to check

for defects

The rear seam is also airbrushed to check if it is OK and the

radiators are painted as once the flaps are in place this area
wont be accessible

Almost there now the final parts are added before painting

The canopy front and rear are added and masked off and the
build is sanded with Micro-mesh to prepare for paint

After the decals are applied, a second gloss coat prepares the

detail in the surface is brought out very nicely

The exhaust stains have now been added using Tamiya XF-69

The undercarriage parts benefit from the lovely Aires wheels

and the extra detail of the flexible brake pipes added to the

made from lead wire. The oleo legs were then

tted using a cardboard template made up
from scale drawings to ensure the angles were
right (how often do you see 109s and Fw 190s

then the wheels and doors were added. The
prop went on and it was now time to do some

things. The aerial lead was a
ddly job, in this scale you really
need to add the ttings so a small

were made by heating a sheet of

then added using blobs of Kristal
Klear. The tiny pennant on the

was nished.

FINAL VERDICT
A great kit without a doubt. Its well worth xing the oil cooler area, though, and the Aires wheels are far better than the kit wheels. The join of the
wing to the fuselage is tricky at the back but otherwise its a pretty simple build.
As a nished item I am extremely pleased with it, it really captures the look of the Bf 109 in the early war period. Now I just need to build a nice Mk
I Spitre to go with it!
Was it worth it?
Most certainly, a great 109!

irfix first did the Spitfire Mk Vb in this scale back in 1977

(#04100), but this is nothing to do with that example, this
is all new. Inside the box you will find one clear and four
grey-coloured sprues containing 151 parts. Surface detail is
via fine, sharp recessed lines, there are no rivets to be seen,
although you do get the fasteners on the cowls as raised detail; hooray
for no rivets, but that does mean some of the access panels actually lack
detail? The interior is made up as a separate tub, a bit like Hasegawa
approached this area, and construction of this assembly takes the first
sixteen stages of assembly. You get a good decal for the instrument
panel, just offering the dial faces, plus the base of the early reflector
gunsight is moulded to the front upper cowling, with a separate clear
section to go on top - very nice. Talking of the upper cowling, Airfix have
approached this differently to everyone else, with the area under the
windscreen and over the forward tank as a separate part, seems odd, but
this does mean the flange base of the windscreen to take the armoured
glass is moulded to this piece and the clear upper section is just that,
resulting (we hope) in a better joint at a point that is notorious for
problems. Ailerons, elevators and rudder are all separate, but the flaps
arent. We do like the undercarriage leg attachment, with the separate
top casting fitted into the spar before the wing halves are joined, as this
allows you to finish the whole model, paint, decal and weather it, before
you add the lower leg and wheels; very clever. Airfix also include angles
for the undercarriage from both the centreline of the fuselage and the
underside of the wing, which should help everyone get this bit right. A big

slipper tank is included, along with two styles of oil cooler, you get two
styles of fishtail exhaust stacks, Rotol or de Havilland propellers, and the
option to have the canopy opened or closed; this latter option requires
the rail side to be removed early on if you go with the closed option.
The kit offers two decal options: AB624, GNH, No.249 Sqn, Ta Qali aireld,
Malta, 1942 (Dark Earth/Sea Grey/Sky); BM597 owned by Historic Aircraft
Collection Ltd and in the colours of JHC, No.317 Sqn [HAC helped Airx with
access to their machine to do measurements etc]. The decals are well printed
with good colour and register, but
are slightly matt with visible carrier
lm around the codes and serial
numbers especially.

Scale 1:72 / Airx, UK / Materials: IM / Kit No.: A05042 / Availability: Airx
(Manufacturer) and Airx stockists worldwide / Price Guide: 16.99

aving given us the new F Mk 2A kit at the end of last year, Airfix have now
updated that kit to offer you the F Mk 6 version, probably the most popular. The
extra parts needed to make this version mean that it has gone up a series in
relation to the Mk 2A, so it also costs 2 more. Inside the box you will find one
clear and five light grey-coloured sprues containing 112 parts. anyone who has
built the F Mk 2A will be familiar with the assembly, as much is the same. In this version
you have the option of the standard front to the belly tank or the cannon armed version
and because of the similarity with the F Mk 2A, you have those annoying inserts in the top
and bottom of the nose; take care and dry-fit these before going anywhere near them with
cement because they will need fine tuning or you will end up filling the gaps and sanding
away the detail! Other airframe options in the kit include flaps up or down, undercarriage up
or down, airbrakes open or closed, Firestreak or Red Top missiles, canopy opened or closed
and the option of adding the overwing tanks if you so choose. Things missing still include a
blanking plate for the engines, as you get the FOD guard for the intake and, considering how
well Hornby have developed the instructions for the Airfix range, its about time it had sprue
diagrams at the front - come on guys, everyone does that nowadays and it saves so much
time when you cant locate a part by number alone.
The kit offers two decal options: XS927, No.74 Sqn, RAF Tengah, Singapore, 1970 (bare metal scheme); XR728,
No.11 Squadron, RAF Binbrook, 1988 (in the grey scheme). The decals are well printed with good colour and
register, but are slightly matt with visible carrier lm. There are masses of stencils included, just like the Mk 2A, so
these take quite a while to apply.

as we have waited a long, long time for a new-tooled 1:72 Lightning. Recommended to all, regardless of
experience.

t is good to see the Kovozvody Prostejov

brand back once again and we all recall
their neat little Avia S-199 and CS-199 in
the 1970s, that were often brought through
the Iron Curtain and traded by modellers
worldwide. Those kits look dated now, but at
the time were the only option to make the Mule
in any scale. Since then we have seen various
limited-run and resin kits of the type but it is
only now that Legato, the new owners of the KP
brand, have rightly added this new tool of the
type to the range. Inside the box you will find
typical Legato/AZ Model plastic comprising three
sprues and 90 parts, however a large number of
them are not used in this version because the
two sprues with the wing parts are, we assume,
from the AZ Model late-series Bf 109 kits; the
type being the amalgamation of the G-14 with a
Jumo 211F engine after all? All the interior etc.
looks typical Luftwaffe, so some mods may be
needed and there are optional parts such as open
radiator doors and drop tanks (not sure on these,
cant recall seeing IAF machines with Luftwaffestyle tanks fitted?). The instructions also show
two canopies, the initial (Luftwaffe) and later
(Czech) styles, but in fact this is just down to the

generic nature of the instructions

because only the initial one is
included in this kit, the later
one comes with the late Czech
version reviewed below; note that neither version
can be posed open.
The kit offers three decal options: D-120, 101st
Squadron, IAF, Herzliya AB, Israel, 1948; 1901
seen during a display of military equipment in
Mugrabi Square, Tel Aviv, Israel, 1950; D-117. 101st

superb print and register and you even get a set of
seat belts, which we feel will be perfectly adequate
in this scale. The sheet also has a complete set of
airframe stencils

Verdict: At last, a modern tooling of the Mule to put

in your 1:72 collection. Although the nature of the
tooling means that this is not a kit for the novice,
it should be within the scope of most and certainly
anyone who could make the old KP versions!

aving already covered the basic tooling above, let us

just confirm that this is the same kit, same parts and,
with only the replacement of the one colour option on

point!
The kit offers three decal options: A-784, Military Air Academy, Hradec Krlov

Czechoslovak Air Force, Plzen-Bory aireld, summer 1952. Options 1 and 3 are in

n the box, as usual, you will find a

current MPM/Special Hobby product,
with nicely moulded parts in a medium
grey-coloured plastic that features fine
engraved detail. In all there are 205
grey and six clear plastic plus five resin and
27 photo-etched components. The resin
has been used to create those parts that
either require high levels of detail, or are
too complex for the limited-run technology
to allow; thus you get the gunsight, filter
screen and exhaust collectors. Detail is
excellent throughout, with the interior built
up as a framework and separate flaps and
control surfaces for the wings, tail and
rudder. The engine looks very nice, with
etched used for the ignition etc. and those
resin exhaust collectors. The only problem
we can foresee with the engine are all
the tiny cowl gills, which are all separate
etched parts, so getting them all in situ,
aligned and level may be a bit of a test.
All undercarriage parts are plastic, feature
good detail and the propeller is made up of
spinner with separate blades.

his new tooling offers any of the Lycoming-powered versions, the 91A being
powered by the Gypsy Major 1C engine. In the box you will find just injected
parts, no resin or etched, with the plastic moulded onto one sprue of medium
grey-coloured plastic that contains 55 parts plus each fuselage half is on a
separate sprue. Surface detail is a mixed of engraved panels and raised ribs
and the whole thing once again looks like the work of Sword. The three clear parts are
on a single sprue and comprise the single-piece canopy and the two landing lights; its a
shame the canopy is only offered in this manner, as there is no way of displaying it open
without major surgery. There is a neat interior, but with it all in plastic, detail is limited
for things like the instrument panels which have just the dials and no detail, or the seats,
which have cushions but no belts. We fully understand the economics behind this, as it
keeps the end price down, but we mention it as some may assume a limited-run product
such as this relies on resin and etched to reproduce such details.
The kit offers three decal options: 91B, S/No.50025, Black 25 of F5 wing at Ljungbyhed,
Swedish AF; 91C, S/No.91385, Black 132 of the Ethiopian Air Force; 91D, Black SF-24 of the

with No.803 NAS, that scheme belongs to WP286 of No.800 NAS, HMS Eagle
(101/J was also carried by two other Attackers, both from No.803 NAS, but
neither had the red nose depicted here). The fonts used for the fuselage and
underwing serials are wrong, the latter are also way too small because they
should cross the undercarriage doors, while the badge on the tail of 101/J is
wrong and too large. Luckily Hannants do a sheet for the FB.2 (#X48117) in

Verdict: OK, so the base kit still has the wrong undercarriage legs as per
the F Mk 1 kit and the decals are best consigned to the bin, really, but
this is a lot easier to build than the Classic Airframes one (and cheaper)
and only bettered if you can work with the old Falcon vac-form. With
some extra effort, because there are shape problems around the nose
to deal with, plus the u/c of course, this
can be made into a nice model, but it is
not a shake and make kit. Recommended

New tooling
111 light grey-coloured and ten clear plastic components (plus a display
stand)
Three decal options, all depicting Aeroot machines, registrations VP-BLL,
VQ-BEH and VQ-BCN. The decals are beautifully printed with real metallic
effect.

Verdict: Excellent, a neat and well moulded kit of the well-known

type with loads of potential schemes other than the ones in the
box. Talking of boxes, well done to the continuation of their super
box-within-a-box style of packaging, other manufacturers could do
with taking a leaf out of Zvezdas book on this! Recommended to all
airliner modellers, and our thanks to The Hobby Company Ltd for the
review sample.

Boudard, No.340 Squadron Groupe Ile-de-France; Mk IXc, Pierre Clostermann, No.602 Squadron; Mk
IXe of No.341 Squadron Groupe Alsace.

Verdict: The Italeri Mk IX is a sound basis for the type in this scale, OK its more expensive
than the new Airx one, but has a lot more nesse in the moulding, and it is certainly cheaper
than Hasegawa if they reissued theirs; it just may seem expensive for those who remember
1998 and its original 3.50 price tag, but I remember fuel under 5 a gallon back then too - all
things change! Recommended to all Spitre fans, and our thanks to The Hobby Company Ltd

Verdict: Good to see this one out, marking 50 years of the Reds as it is a worthy
anniversary. Being based on a kit that has been out before means there is no
shortage of upgrade parts should you feel that way inclined and you could
even get alternative markings if you so wish, so this one has lots of potential.

Verdict: Yes, you certainly get a lot in the box, all of superb quality and certainly for a
combined price that is probably less than trying to buy it all separately? The overall concept
is intended for the experienced modeller, and this is certainly one we would recommend quite
highly to that group because they will get the best from what is in the box. Our thanks to

NEW RELEASES / ACCESSORIES

ALLEY CAT, UK

[www.a2zeemodels.co.uk] / Available worldwide from: A2Zee Models

#AC32037H Bf 109H Conversion

This set is intended for the Revell Bf 109G-6 kit and

allows you to make the long-span projected H-series.
In the stout box you will find sixteen resin components,
plus die-cut vinyl masks or the Stammkenzeichen (code
letters) and swastikas, the crosses can come from the
kit or the spares box. Included in the set is A2Zees
corrected upper cowl section, which puts right the
major error with the Revell kit and if you want to base
your H on the G-10 kit, you can get the update set for
that kit (#AC32035C) from Alley Cat separately. The
main components are the new centre section, complete
with separate radiators and a new aft fuselage/vertical
tail complete with separate rudder. The other bits in the
kit are the blanking plates for the radiator positions in
the base kit, now that these are technically inboard.
Designed for: Revell kit
Material: R, Ma
Price Guide: 20.00

Verdict: An excellent conversion, which

I just had to purchase as the big-span H
in this scale is going to look great. It is
a neat touch to include the swastikas as
masks, as they are missing from the base
kit anyway due to that rm being German, and the symbol being banned there.
Highly recommended to all, I am now
looking forward to getting their Ta 154
conversion, as they seem to be having
a spate of Luftwaffe-related subjects of
late - well done guys!

Inc: 45 resin parts consisting of a full interior update

fret of etched, containing 43 parts and this offers
various screens, covers etc., as well as the revisions
to the instrument panel and tail rotor blades and
the supports for the FLIR camera that comes as a
resin part. The decals included in the kit are for a
pretty complex overall scheme, so to help masking
things like the bat on the tail, you also get a set of
die-cut self-adhesive tape masks. the decal sheet
itself contains numbers to allow airframes 882, 885

Material: R, PE, Dec

Verdict: These are all well cast with excellent levels of detail. The Dauphin conversion is impressive and the instructions use a lot of
clear colour images of the real machines to show you how various bits t as well as photos of a model being converted, so that should
make assembly clear for most people; some clearer C&M guide would be useful though, as that is entirely down to photos and FS numbers for the colours. Both sets should be within the scope of all bar the complete novice, although the conversion by its very nature is
better suited to those with a few such conversions under their belts. Highly recommended and our thanks to Wingman Models for the

EP#62-32 Fw 190A-5/U14 Conversion

This is the torpedo-carry update on the base A-5 airframe and

in the large clear box you get the LT 5Fb torpedo, ETC 502
centreline rack, extended tailwheel and the enlarged vertical
fin and rudder. Only two machines were thus converted (TD+SI
and TD+SJ) and dont forget these machines had no IFF FuG
25 fitted, so dont install the rod antenna for that under the rear
fuselage. The decal sheet includes markings for TD+SI and
you get the full works, national markings (including swastikas),
codes and a complete set of stencils all printed by Cartograf, so
they are superb.
Designed for: Hasegawa kit
Material: R, PE, Dec
Price Guide: 34.99 ($38.50)

Verdict: Having just done a book all about the

BMW-powered Fw 190s this little set came to me
for that, but I thought it would be nice to also share
it with readers of MAI as well, as it is great set and
will make a model that is different in any scale, but
will look great in 1:32. Most highly recommended
to all Luftwaffe modellers and I can only guess
what version they will do next, maybe a Neptunequipped A-6 or an A-8 with Kurt, Germanys
version of the bouncing bomb!

#PE24 DET - Etched Brass Cockpit Parts

This large (10cm x 13.75cm) fret offers numerous types

of cockpit detail including switches, dial knobs, lever
circuit breakers and electrical components. There are
also faces for Luftwaffe FuG 10 and RAF R.1155 radios,
although strangely not the T.1154 transmitter that goes
with the R.1155 receiver in all cases? All the parts are
finely etched with good relief that should make them
look excellent under a coat of paint.

#PE24 BEZ - Etched Brass

Instrument Surrounds

This 9cm x 13cm fret offers a mass of diameters

and styles of instrument bezels that will suit types
from WWI right through to modern jets. Each bezel
type is supplied in multiple diameters and versions
and you also get single, dual and triple mounted
instruments, which were commonplace in multiengine types.
Designed for: Various kits
Material: PE
Price Guide: 17.95

1:24
#AS24 TIFF - Hawker Typhoon Mk Ib Cockpit Instrument Decals

Designed for the new Airfix monster, this sheet offers two styles of decal for the instrument panels in the type. The first allows the
individual instrument decals to be laid over the kit part (clear plastic is included should you wish to stamp out new glass lenses!),
while the other is designed to be placed under the clear plastic panel to give the dials depth, the choice is yours. Great care has
been taken in researching these dials and the manufacturer has not fallen into the trap of thinking that the colours of preserved
dials are correct, they are not, that is just radioactive luminous paint degrading over time to a light coffee (or amber) colour, when
new the dial characters and pointer would have been white [Note: as a trained radiological officer, I have dealt with quite a few
old aircraft instruments!].
Designed for: Various kits
Material: PE
Price Guide: 10.95

Verdict: These are all excellent items,

extremely valuable when you build
in the bigger scales because things
like instrument dials can actually be
read in 1:32 and 1:24. Airscale offer
a vast selection of such sets and a
visit to their website will probably
have you stocking up big time! Highly
recommended to all, and our thanks to

#AC32001 Have Glass II
Canopy for F-16B/D/F
Designed for: Academy kits
Material: IM
Price Guide: 11.99

Note: The Have Glass II range offers kit canopies that have been treated with a reective coating to replicate that seen on the real thing. The coating
is hard to see in the accompanying images, as it only catches the light at certain angles and a camera does not pick that up too well, but the effect is
extremely realistic. Now, many will think, how do I deal with canopy seal lines? well the answer is simple: just as you usually do because the coating is
inside the canopy, so you can scrape, sand and polish the outside to your heart's content.

Verdict: This is a neat range, with the effect rst seen, I think I am right in saying, on periscopes for AFVs. Going by these two they will
certainly add a great deal to the completed model because it is extremely difcult to reproduce the coloured tint correctly with paint,
even using clear colours. The entire range is highly recommended to all, and our thanks to Pocketbond Ltd for the review samples.

This set basically offers two

you need add is the brass tubing
for the push rod covers.

Verdict: Verdict: I just had to purchase these sets because the kits are sitting on my workbench, so I thought I would show you all just
how good they are. The quality of the casting and the level of detail in both sets is superb and they are just so much better than the kit
parts, which is good because a radial engine is always a focal point on a model. Highly recommended to all.

Decal website and download the instructions

as a PDF le, then print them yourself. We fully
understand the reasoning behind this, but it does
rather impose on the buyer that extra cost, you
cannot print at home to the quality of an actual
printer and we found the instructions, although
full of photos and other images, lacked any actual
data on the subjects depicted. A little extra work

to make these instructions more user-friendly

would thus be appreciated by all, we suspect.
Oh, and dont be confused, because the header
card on the 1/48th sheet is marked LM48003,
but in fact it is LM48001 when you look for the

Verdict: It is always good to see new names and products in our hobby, so these two sheets are very welcome because they cover some
unusual subjects. They are recommended to all Huey fans, and our thanks to LM Decals for the review samples.

NEW RELEASES / MATERIALS & TOOLS

MASTER TOOLS

This is the name for the range of tools and display stands etc. produced by Trumpeter and here are some of
the latest in this range to reach the UK
#09950 Sandpaper
This pack contains 20x6cm sheets of
600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit
sandpaper, which is of a type that is
bonded to a plastic backing, so it can
be used wet or dry. Also in the pack
is a 20x12cm sheet of double-sided
foam-backed tape (made by 3M), that
allows you to secure the sandpaper
to handles including those already
offered in the Master Tools range
(#09929 4.99), or their Sandpaper
Grip set (#09919 3.99).

#09951 Model Kit Tool Set Clamps

This is an extremely useful set,
which it rst glance may seem a
little odd, but the various clamps in
this set are very ingenious.
Clap A - This is your typical peg
clamp with a spring tensioner
between the arms, but it has circular
clamping jaws, so is ideal for round
objects where at jaws just slip off
Clamp B - This is similar to the
above in that it is intended for
tubes etc., but it is a simple spring
construction and you also get four
more circular holes in the handle
area that will allow you to hold

things like tubes for cutting, or by

putting two in either side of the
split in the middle, you can actually
use them as clamps by opening
up the gap, sliding the tubes into
place either side of the item, then
releasing the clamp, which will
spring back into place holding the
item with the tubes; the limited
pressure of this type of clamp
makes it ideal for sensitive and
complex joints
Clamp for elastic bands A - These
are 10mm diameter circular spring
clamps, which on their own can
just be used as clips along edges
etc., or by combining them with

elastic bands, you can use them

as long clamps around wings etc.
by clipping the clamp on the edge,
then slipping the elastic band over
the top curved hook and running
it round to the other hook on the
underside
Clamp for elastic bands B These look like Lego, but basically
comprise plastic blocks that
interlock and that have notches
in the ends. You lock a number
together, depending on what you
need to clamp, then run elastic
bands from one set of notches
round to the other. The neat thing is
that the X shape of the unit adds

tension in the band and also allows

you to securely notch them in place
on sharp corners as well as over
things like llets and other shapes
that will often just have an elastic
band slipping off
Bottle opener - An odd one, as it
does open Gunze and Tamiya paint
bottles, but the plastic nature of the
item is such that I would not want to
trust the blade elements to prise up
a really stuck-down tinlet lid! That
said, this too has one of the circular
clamp elements see in Clamp B, so
it is also useful as a clamp.
Price Guide: 6.50

Verdict: Neat, simple and effective, plus they will not break the bank so what more can you ask. I think that the clamps especially will be one
of those tools that you take a while to think of and use, but once they get into your mind set, you will use them all of the time. Everything
featured here is highly recommended to all, and thanks to Pocketbond Ltd, the UK importer for Trumpeter products, for the review samples.

REVELL
Revell has quite an extensive range of
paints, glues, brushes etc., but it has only
been recently that they started to add
other model nishing products to their
catalogue. We featured their rst masking
tapes back in Issue No.92, with the 6mm
(#39694) and 10mm (#39695) sizes, well
now they have added 20mm (#39696)
to the catalogue. As with the previous
sizes, this comes as a yellow-orange
coloured tape reminiscent of Kabuki,
Tamiya, Tristar etc. Each roll contains 10
metres, so 2 metres more than standard
Tamiya rolls and the centre tube is plastic,
so it should not distort or atten (always

annoying, that!). Performance is good

and it conforms well to complex curves
and allows little if any seepage of either
enamel or acrylic paints.
Comparisons will be made with the
previously-mentioned tapes, but this is
just another way of obtaining a specialist
modelling tape, and hopefully with Revells
national and international coverage, it
should be more readily available in toy and
hobby shops. The previously mentioned
6mm and 10mm sizes retail for 2.25 and
2.99 respectively, while this new 20mm
version retails for 4.99 and you should be
able to nd them in all Revell stockists.

NEW in the HOW TO BUILD... series

HOW TO BUILD...
REVELL 1:32 SPITFIRE MK.IIA
The name Spitfire has now become synonymous with
an entire island people, and their battle to maintain their
freedom in the shadow of the Nazi jackboot. The very
shape and sound of the Spitfire seems to still invoke and
embody the usually reserved pride of the British person.
It is probably true to say that Reginald Mitchells beautiful
aircraft design is one of the most easily recognised and
much-loved shapes that ever took to the skies.
When actual mass production of the Spitfire ceased in
1948, over 20,000 machines had been built, and operated
by over thirty countries around the world.
This iconic series saw service with the RAF right up
until the mid-1950s. It also saw service with the Irish Air
Corps as late as 1961; a full 26yrs after the flight of the
prototype K5054.
Revell has now released an all-new 1:32 scale
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa. With some minor
modifications, this model may also be built as a Mk.I
or a Mk.Va.
Over the course of five Chapters, James Hatch examines
the kit contents in detail, describes construction of the
model with lavish illustrations, and points out the areas of
the kit that may be improved and corrected.
This new book features an exhaustive step-by-step guide
to construction; plus a painting and weathering tutorial.
A number of essential reference
resources are also included.
More than 200 photos, a reference
guide, and photos of the kit sprues
are all included - a must have before
you build the model!

by K. Stenman & K. Holda / MMP Books /

ISBN: 978-83-63678-07-4 / Price Guide: 35.00 /
208-page, hardback / English

his new title starts MMPs look at Finnish C&M and

in it there is in-depth analysis of the following types:
Bristol Bulldog, Fokker D.XXI, Gloster Gladiator, Fiat
G.50, Morane-Saulnier MS.406 (including the MrkMorane) and Brewster Model 239. Each type has
its own section in which the narrative charts the operational
history of the time in Finland during WWII and this is supported
with a mass of clear period images. After this, there is a
separate section for each just on camouflage and markings
with a clear narrative supported by colour side profiles created
from the period images. Coverage within this section in in
chronological order, so you can see how the C&M evolved and
changed through the war.
VERDICT: A STUNNING TITLE AND KARI IS WELL KNOWN FOR HIS SUPERB
IN-DEPTH COVERAGE OF FINNISH AIR FORCE SUBJECTS, SO THERE CAN BE
NON-ONE BETTER TO DO THIS TITLE FOR MMP. OUR THANKS TO MMP FOR
THE REVIEW SAMPLE, WE CANT WAIT TO SEE VOLUME 2.

laminated card cover / French

his publisher continues to cover specific aircraft

types from their nation and here covers the French
Gannet. The narrative, all in French, charts the
development of the type from the first prototype
in 1956, through all the various changes and
modifications made to it before it finally went into production
in 1959 and then its use on French Naval carrier from then
right up until retirement in 2000. Throughout there are lots of
period images in both black and white and colour, plus in the
earlier sections about development, there are diagrams and
other technical images from the flight manual. A whole section
is devoted to each Flotille that operated the type, plus there is
another at the end that looks at camouflage and markings and
along with this are some superb colour side profiles.
VERDICT: AN EXCELLENT TITLE, THE FRENCH TEXT MAY PUT SOME OFF, BUT
THE INFORMATION CONTAINED WITHIN THE IMAGES IS WORTH IT ALONE
AND YOU CAN ALWAYS USE A TRANSLATION PROGRAMME IF YOU NEED
SPECIFICS TRANSLATED. OUR THANKS TO CASEMATE UK FOR THE REVIEW

Listening In
by D. Forster & C. Gibson / Hikoki Publications / ISBN:
978-1-902109-38-1 / Price Guide: 29.95/$49.95 / 192page, A4, hardback with separate dust jacket / English

his is a detailed account of RAF electronic

intelligence gathering since the end of WWII. The
detailed narrative charts how this was undertaken
by the RAF right from the early days and the radar
calibration role undertaken by the likes of the
Lancaster/Lincoln and Washington, trough the jet era with
the Canberra, Comet and on to the Nimrod, with a look to
the future and the RC-135W. Each section deals with either
a specific development in equipment, or in the overall role
of listening. Throughout each section you get a good
selection of images, although you have to understand how
secret this type of mission was, so images are hard to come
by. Each section does include excellent official images of
the equipment used, as well as a few showing their fitment
within specific aircraft types. Some of the projected types are
included as well, with some excellent 3D art depicting what
might have been, from the skilled hand of Adrian Mann.
VERDICT: THIS IS A VERY INFORMATIVE TITLE, PACKED WITH TECHNICAL
DATA AND, FOR SOMETHING SO SECRET, QUITE A LOT OF IMAGES; WE
ESPECIALLY LIKE ALL THE WASHINGTON IMAGES, AS YOU DONT GET TO
SEE MANY RAF B-50S. A USEFUL TITLE FOR THE MODELLER AND ONE WE
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL. OUR THANKS TO CRCY FOR THE REVIEW

Mezek & Turbina;

Czechoslovakia
by B. Kudlicka / MMP Books / ISBN: 978-83-63678-08-1 /
Price Guide: 19.99 / 112-page, A4, laminated card cover
/ English

his is the latest addition to the White Series from

MMP and comes in an A4 format. Inside the narrative
charts the development, production and service use
of the Avia S-199/CS-199, a Czech-built Bf 109G-14
with a Jumo 211F engine, and the Avia S-92/CS-92,
Czech-built Me 262s. For each type the coverage looks at the
development and service use in the Czechoslovak Air Force, as
well as giving a technical description of each and even a list of
those that survive in museums. The Turbina section even has
an account from Frantisek Kraus, who flew the S-92. This is all
followed by a eight pages of colour profiles, with side and top
views given nice and big on the page. Once through this you will
find that operation of the S-199 in Israel is not forgotten, with a
nice section of the Mezek in the IAF along with a good section
of images and, again, colour profiles.
VERDICT: A VERY USEFUL TITLE, AS IT FILLS SOME OF THE GAPS IN
AVAILABLE COVERAGE OF EITHER TYPE, AS WELL AS CONCLUDING THE
HISTORY OF THE BF 109 AND ME 262. THE EXCELLENT PHOTOS, PLUS THE
PROFILES WILL HELP YOU MAKE THE VARIANT, THE IAF MATERIAL BEING
EXTREMELY USEFUL FOR THE NEW KP KITS OF THE S-199. OUR THANKS TO

Tiger! The De Havilland

D.H.82 Tiger Moth
by S. McKay MBE / Specialty Press / ISBN: 978-0-85979182-3 / Price Guide: 29.95/$49.95 / 412-page, A4, hardback
with separate dust jacket / English

his is a revised and updated version of the title first

produced by Midland Publishing back in 1999. It is a huge
undertaking and the 400+ pages attest to that, but this
is a big subject to cover. The 26 chapters cover specific
eras in the life of the Tiger Moth, from the issuing of the
specification that led to the design, through to the Jackeroo and
finally a look at modern display flying around the world using the
Tiger Moth. Each section has a very extensive narrative and this is
combined with a mass of period images in both colour or black and
white. We quite like the section entitled front page news, which
deals with various events involving the Tiger Moth over the years,
including one being landed in the main street at Middelbeers in the
Netherlands in 1948 when the pilot was overcome with air sickness
- hopefully he gave up flying!
VERDICT: WE KNOW JUST HOW POPULAR THE TIGER MOTH WAS AND STILL IS,
BUT ITS NOT UNTIL YOU GO THROUGH A BOOK SUCH AS THIS THAT YOU REALISE
JUST HOW MUCH. THE SCOPE FOR MODELLERS IS HUGE HERE, YOU COULD BUILD
AIRFIXS ENTIRE PRODUCTION OF THEIR NEW KIT FOR THE NEXT DECADE AND
PROBABLY STILL NOT RUN OUT OF POTENTIAL OPTIONS, AND MOST OF THEM ARE
IN THIS BOOK SOMEWHERE! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, AND OUR THANKS TO CRCY

Modelers Guide to the Hercules Part 1

by J. Sherlock / Aero Research / ISBN: 978-0-9851154-2-5 / Price Guide: $26.95 / 140-page, American A4, spiral bound with
card covers / English

s the title says, this is a guide purely for the modeller and this first part covers the C-130 from YC-130 prototype through to the
EC-130E. There are thirty variants in all covered in this first part, with 48 line drawings showing the various airframe differences
between each and on top of this, these are supported by 64 colour and black and white images of specific aircraft, or specific
things about that aircraft. The title actually begins with reviews of thirteen kits from 1:144 to 1:48 that are of variants covered by
this volume. The author then also gives comprehensive lists of accessories and decals for the Hercules. The title is concluded
with a list of all relevant serial numbers, operating units and surviving aircraft.
VERDICT: WITH SO MANY HERCULES KITS OUT THERE THIS IS GOING TO BE AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR MANY MODELLERS, ESPECIALLY AS IT SORTS OUT ALL THE
CHANGES FOR EACH VARIANT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL HERC FANS, AND OUR THANKS TO AERO RESEARCH FOR THE REVIEW SAMPLE.
