A furnace wall is made up of three layers of thicknesses 250 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm with thermal
conductivities of 1.65, k and 9.2 W/moC respectively. The inside is exposed to gases at 1250 oC with a convection
coefficient of 25 W/m oC and inside surface is at 1100 oC, the outside surface is exposed to air at 25 oC with convection
coefficient of 12 W/m2 oC. Determine:
The unknown thermal conductivity k.
The overall heat transfer coefficient.
All surface temperature.
2.
A hollow spherical form is used to determine the conductivity of materials. The inner diameter is 20cm and the
outer diameter is 50cm.A 30W heater is placed inside and under steady conditions, the temperature at 15cm and 20cm
radii were found to be 80 and 60o C. Determine the thermal conductivity of the material. Also find the outside
temperature. If the surrounding is at 30o C, determine the convection heat transfer co-efficient over the surface.
3. In a double pipe counter flow heat exchanger, 10,000 kg/h of an oil having a specific heat of 2095 J/kgK is cooled
from 80o C to 50 o C by 8000 kg/h of water entering at 25 o C. Determine the heat exchanger area for an overall heat
transfer coefficient of 300 W/m2K. Take Cp for water as 4180 J/kgK.
4.
A thick walled tube of stainless steel with 20mm inner diameter and 40mm outer diameter is covered with a 30
mm layer of asbestos insulation (k=0.2W/m0C).If the inside wall temperature of the pipe is maintained at 6000C and
outside insulation at 10000C,calculate the heat loss per meter of length.
5. A copper wire 5mm dia. carrying current generates 66.76W/m length
a. If the surface is exposed to air at 30oC with h=25 W/m2K. Determine the surface temperature.
b. If a very thin coating of varnish like insulation with a constant resistance of 0.02 m 2oC/W is added, determine
the surface temperature.
6.
Water at the rate of 4 kg/s is heated from 38 oC to 55oC in a shell and tube type heat exchanger. The water is to
flow inside tubes of 2 cm diameter with an average velocity of 35 cm/s. Hot water available at 95 oC and at the rate of
2.0 kg/s is used as the heating medium on the shell side. If the length of tubes must not be more than 2 m, calculate the
number of tube passes, the number of tubes per pass and the length of the tubes for one pass shell, assuming U o = 1500
W/m2 K.
7.
To reduce frosting it is desired to keep the outside surface of a glazed window at 4 oC. The outside is at -10 oC
and the convection co-efficient is 60 W/m2K. In order to maintain the conditions a uniform heat flux is provided at the
inner surface which is in contact with room air at 22oC with a convection co-efficient of 12 W/m2K. The glass is 7mm
thick and has a thermal conductivity of 1.4 W/mK. Determine the heating required per m2 area.
8.
A mild steel tank of wall thickness 12mm contains water at 950C. The thermal conductivity of mild steel is
50W/m0C, and the heat transfer coefficients for the inside and outside tank are 2850 and 10W/m2 0C, respectively. If the
atmospheric temperature is 150C, calculate:
(i)The rate of heat loss per m2 of the tank surface area;
(ii)The temperature of the outside surface of the tank.
9.
Water enters a counter flow, double pipe heat exchanger at 15 oC, flowing at the rate of 1300 kg/h. It is heated
by oil (Cp = 2000 J/kgK) flowing at the rate of 550 kg/h from the inlet temperature of 94 oC. For an area of 1 m 2 and an
overall heat transfer coefficient of 1075 W/m 2K, determine the total heat transfer and the outlet temperature of water
and oil.
10.
Two slabs are placed in contact, but due to roughness, only 40% of area is in contact and the gap in the
remaining area is 0.02mm thick and is filled with air. The slabs are 10cm thick each and their conductivities are 15.5
W/mK and 200 W/mK. The temperature of the face of the hot surface is at 250oC and the outside surface of the other
slab is at 35oC. Determine the heat flow and the contact resistance. The conductivity of the air is 0.0321 W/mK.
