RAMADAAN
R

amadaan is a month of reflection,

prayer and fasting.

During the month, observers gain a

better understanding of and appreciation
for the suffering of impoverished
and hungry people around the world.
Ramadaan also serves to remind
Muslims of the importance of charity,
and their obligation to be charitable
during the month and all throughout the
year.
Islamic Relief teams distribute food
packets in impoverished communities
to provide relief during Ramadaan. Each
food hamper holds essential food items
that is important to the local diet of the

SYRIA CRISIS

YEMEN APPEAL

ver 4 years of unrest have created the worst

humanitarian crisis in the modern history of the
Middle East region.
Over 12 million Syrians are in need for humanitarian aid,
around 6 million people have been internally displaced,
and more than 3 million refugees have fled to neighbouring
countries.

Working with Syrians since 2011

Four years on from the beginning of the conflict, Islamic
Relief has implemented more than 223 projects to support
vulnerable Syrians in Syria, and neighbouring Lebanon, Iraq
and Jordan. These projects have varied from providing food
aid, non-food items, education support, shelter assistance,
psychosocial support, Water and Sanitation Health projects,
and medical assistance.
Islamic Relief has reached 7,126,795 people in Syria and
neighbouring countries since 2012 through its humanitarian
and urgent assistance in various sectors.

n already devastating humanitarian situation in Yemen

has been severely worsened by increased fighting.

In 2014 alone, more than 500,000 Syrians benefited from

Islamic Reliefs Winter programmes, with over 11,000
Syrians in Lebanon receiving items such as blankets, clothes,
vouchers, gas heaters, gas cylinders and mattresses. Inside
Syria, over 44,000 blankets were distributed, as well as
thousands of mattresses and sheets.

At least 900 people have been reported dead, 2,000 injured

and more than 100,000 have been displaced from their
homes.
Islamic Relief has launched an emergency appeal, aiming
to reach 700,000 people in the worst affected areas with
food, water and sanitation, trauma and first aid kits.

We intend to carry on our work inside Syria in 2015,

so please donate today to make this work possible.

According to Mohamed Salah Eldin, Country Director for

Islamic Relief in Yemen, urgent action is required.
We need to act before we have an acute humanitarian
disaster on our handsThere is a massive need for
medical supplies and clean water in Aden and our contacts
on the ground are telling us there are huge queues of
people everywhere desperate for water.
Food distributions began on April 9 in Sanaa and will
continue into six other governorates. Every day, 200 families
will receive flour, rice, sugar, beans, noodles, peas and
cooking oil, which normally last between two weeks and a
month.
Islamic Relief has been working in Yemen since 2004 and
is working through offices run by local staff in Sadah,
Hajja, Amran, Sanaa, Marib and Dhamar.
To support our efforts in Yemen, donate to the Yemen
Emergency Appeal today. This fund allows us to respond
quickly and effectively to those affected by the conflict.
We will be using this fund to support the worst affected
in Yemen.

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE
APPEAL

he last escalation of conflict in Gaza, which began in

July 2014 and killed more than 1,900 Palestinians
over seven weeks, has worsened an already grave
humanitarian crisis within the enclave.
Successive outbreaks of conflict have deepened suffering in
Gaza. Even before the most recent fighting, poverty fuelled
by years of blockade and restrictions forced 80 per cent of
the population to depend on humanitarian or government
assistance.
The most recent conflict affected around 1.8 million people,
as essential infrastructure such as power stations, water
treatment plants, hospitals and schools were damaged or
destroyed. Almost 11,000 homes were ruined.
Months later, the blockade continues, hindering attempts to
reconstruct schools, hospitals and homes. Around 100,000
Palestinians remain displaced and emergency shelters still
house hundreds of thousands of people, with many others
sheltering with friends or family.
Most residents cannot source their own food and are reliant
on aid to survive.

devastating earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, hit

Nepal on the morning of 25th April.

Islamic Relief has been working in Gaza for almost

20 years, and was on the ground providing life-saving
assistance throughout the recent conflict.

Strong tremors were felt as far away as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and

India, with the earthquake triggering avalanches in the Himalayas.

We are calling for urgent support for our work to rebuild

lives and deliver long-term positive change for the people
of Gaza. Donate today.

The death toll from the earthquake has surpassed 6,600 and
approximately 14,000 injured.

UPDATE AS FROM 5 MAY 2015

AT A GLANCE :

Islamic Relief has distributed food to more than 500 families in Nepal.

1.2 million people now have

reduced access to water
Damage to health sector will cost
USD $19 million to address

Experts from our Disaster Response Team provided food parcels

to the villages of Bhimtar and Shipapokhari in the Sindhpal Chowk
district following assessment.

Scores of schools damaged or

out of use

Many homes in the villages have been completely destroyed. With the
monsoon season imminent, the need for shelter is increasing.

Nearly 11,000 homes destroyed

More than 22,000 farming and fishing
families have lost their livelihoods

Haseeb Khalid, from the team, said: The community was horrified by
the devastation. New mothers and children are the most affected by
the earthquake and already lack the nutrition they need.

At least 373,000 children require

specialist psychosocial support.

Families are asking for clean water, food, blankets and shelter. But
they are also concerned about their futures.
Islamic Relief will be carrying out more food distribution shortly, and
plans to return to the villages to distribute tents and plastic sheeting.

ORPHAN AND CHILD WELFARE

Islamic Relief South Africa is supporting orphans and vulnerable children from previously
disadvantaged communities with high levels of unemployment, high rates of HIV infections and where
opportunities to earn an income and education are low. Majority of these children are either infected
or affected by HIV/Aids.
The orphans and vulnerable children project by Islamic Relief looks at the development and
empowerment of the orphan family as a whole. The target areas for this intervention are previously
disadvantaged communities, which lack enabling conditions for social and economic empowerment.
These areas are in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

The specialized wing forms part of a strategic partnership worth USD $10 million and is being hailed as a
fitting part of the legacy of South African political icon, Nelson Mandela.
According to CEO of Islamic Relief Worldwide, Dr Mohamed Ashmawey, the oncology unit will enable more
children across Africa to beat cancer.
The Islamic Relief Oncology Centre of Excellence will provide intensive paediatric and specialist care,
and serves the last wish of Nelson Mandela to build this hospital in Johannesburg. No child will be turned
away because they cannot afford to pay.

We were informed last year about the massive backlog of

800 children waiting to receive therapy. Islamic Relief has
since sponsored the appointment of a Speech and Hearing
Therapist at the hospital, Programmes Coordinator,
Minhaj Jeenah said.
Since her appointment, Chantal Du Toit has seen a total

also conducted 398 follow up sessions.

Islamic Relief contributed R300 000

We would like to commend Chantal Du Toit and the Red
