PHASE II 2x300MW PUTTALAM COAL POWER PROJECT

1.0 General

The Puttalam Coal Power Plant is located near the village of Panaiyadi on the
Kalpitiya Peninsula, approximately 12 km west of the city of Puttalam. The Project is
a coal fired Power Station in stages with an ultimate planned capacity of 900 MW. The
scope of the phase II covers the installation of the first condensing turbo generator and
coal fired Units with a capacity of 2x300 MW, along with the associated power
transmission system, site infrastructure and auxiliary systems. The project also
includes coal supply facilities as well as coal storage and ash disposal.

4.0 Design criterion


This project is an expansion project (phase II). Phase II covers two units with a capacity of 2x300MW. The
total capacity of phase I and phase II will be 3x300MW.

4.1 Brief introduction of power plant main building


4.1.1
Phase II is on the right extension side of phase I
a) Longitudinal arrangement of steam turbine generator. Turbine towards fixed side.
b) Boiler house is all steel structural, hypaethral placement above operating floor (12.6m)
c) Turbine house is concrete structural
d) Central control building between unit2 and unit 3
4.1.2 Turbine house platform
a) Feed water pump, OCCW pump, main oil tank, main oil cooler, CCCW heat exchange
device, vacuum pumps etc. are on the ground floor (0m).
b) Ground floor (0m), middle floor (6.3m), operating floor (12.6m) in turbine house
c) Steam turbine generator on the operating floor.
4.1.3 Deaerator building (RC frame)

4.2.3 air-flue gas system and auxiliary equipments

4.2.3.1 Primary air system

4.3 Thermal system and auxiliary equipments
4.3.1 Main reheat & bypass steam system

4.3.2 Extraction steam system
The turbine has eight (8) pressure stages of non-regulating extraction steam. The No.1,2&3
extraction steam stages supply steam to three (3) HP heaters respectively. The No.4 extraction
steam stage supply steam to auxiliary steam header and deaerator. The No.5,6,7&8 extraction
steam stages supply steam to four (4) LP heaters respectively.
4.3.3 Auxiliary steam system
The Auxiliary Steam System (AS) is designed to provide steam for the following services
under various operating load condition of the thermal power plant.
a) Steam for deaerator preheating, load rejection and cutting off
b) Back-UP steam for turbine seal system
c) Steam for air preheater soot blowers
d) Steam for coal mill fire fighting
e) Steam for boiler heating
f) Steam for boiler system (standby connection)
4.3.4 Feed water system
The function of the boiler feed-water system is to deliver feed-water from the outlet of
deaerator feed-water tank to the inlet of boiler economizer inlet header. In the process of
handling the feed-water is heated by the extraction steam from the steam turbine to improve

the cycle efficiency.


The system also supplies the feed-water to the boiler super heater, attemperator to moderate
the superheated steam temperature. Besides, feed-water tapped from the feed-water pump
intermediate stage is sent to the two sides of attemperator before the steam repeaters to protect
the reheater from overheat.
The feed-water system also supplies feed-water to turbine HP. By-pass system, acting as
attemperator water to reduce the main steam temperature.
4.3.5 Condensate water system
The main function of the system is that pumping the condensate from hot well to the deaerator,
controlling, heating, deaerating of the condensate and taking other necessary actions in
delivering in order to ensure the safe and operation, increase the efficiency of heat circulation.
Two condensate pumps (one operation and one standby) each with 100% capacity, 3 LP
heaters and one gland seal condenser are equipped in the system. There are several of
desuperheater spray and miscellaneous water upstream of gland seal condenser. The control
valve controlling the water level of deaerator, recirculating piping of min. condensate flow are
equipped downstream of the gland steam condenser. In addition there is a control valve
controlling the make-up water entering into the hot well, one condensate storage tank and one
condensate transfer pump completed in the system to guarantee the operation water level in
the condenser.
