By Aaron Retherford
Last year, the Department of Veterans Affairs
estimated 413 World War II veterans die each day.
With each death, our connection to that era dwindles.
One longtime Graniteville resident recently
experienced just how far younger generations are
willing to go in order to preserve that bond.
Cecil Pete Tucker was drafted into the military
on Sept. 3, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air
Corps. He was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska for
two of his three years of service, where he worked
on airplanes. He never saw combat, but he did work
side by side with the Soviets, who took the planes
to Siberia to be used in the war.
Tucker remembered those days as one of 22
veterans on the Honor Flight New England trip in
April. Honor Flight New England honors WWII or
terminally ill veterans by flying them to Washington
D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to those who
served in the military.
While Tucker didnt know much about the program before a neighbor brought him information,
he now believes any veteran who has the chance to
experience an Honor Flight should do it.
Four days after turning 94, Tucker and his
daughter, Jane who acted as his guardian for the
day headed to the VA in
Manchester, NH for 5 a.m.
meeting. Thats where the experience of a lifetime began.
While the veterans traveled
by school bus, a group of 70
motorcyclists led the way to the
airport. Waiting there were two
fire trucks with ladders extended high into the air. Hanging
from the ladders was a giant
American flag, spanning over
the highway as the bus drove
underneath. The airport corridors were lined with people,
eagerly waiting to greet the veterans before most people wake
up on a Sunday. After landing in Longtime Graniteville resident Cecil Pete Tucker (seated below far

For military servicemen abroad,
mail call was a welcome distraction. As part of the Honor
Flight, each veteran received a
manila envelope filled with
mail, wishing them a good trip.
Tucker said he received over 30
cards.
Once the veterans arrived in

they never waited in traffic.

Flight group drove by the Naval Memorial, visited the Marine Corps
War Memorial, and toured the Air Force Memorial near the Pentagon. Tucker, a lifelong airplane buff, said the architecture of the Air
Force Memorial was stunning and impressed him even more than
the WWII Memorial.
Tucker also watched the changing of the guard at Arlington
National Cemetery. While he appreciated the sanctity and tradition of
Arlington National Cemetery, it wasnt his favorite part of the trip.
Theyd have to pay me about $10,000 a day to do that, he
joked. It was the most boring job.
After a buffet dinner, the trip concluded with a flight back to
Manchester, and a school band was there to play for the veterans at
10:15 p.m., capping off the more than 17-hour trip.
It was really nice to be able to spend the day with him like that,
Jane Tucker said. The reception of the people was phenomenal.
I cant believe how many hands I shook that day, Pete Tucker said.
However, none of this could have happened without Joe Byron, a
retired police officer from New Hampshire and a Vietnam War vet.
Toward the end of his career in law enforcement, Byron investigated crimes against the senior population. He heard a story from a
vet dealing with survivors guilt, which inspired Byron to do more.
Byron founded Honor Flight New England in 2009 and completed
his 37th Honor Flight on Sunday.
I think there are a couple of goals in mind when we do these
trips, Byron said. One is to ensure their (the veterans) service will
never be forgotten and to let them know America still loves them.
The other goal is to show them how much we appreciate how much
theyve done for us and if need be, to possibly bring some closure
to some of the experiences they lived.
They treated us like royalty, thats for sure, Pete Tucker said.
If you are a veteran or know of any veterans who might be interested in taking an Honor Flight, check out www.honorflightnewengland.org or call Byron at 603-518-5368 for more information.

The Onion River Century Ride to benefit the Kellogg-Hubbard
Library is a beautiful ride through the heart of the Northeast
Kingdom of Vermont. The ride takes you through one of the most
scenic areas of Vermont, provides beautiful views and a fun and
challenging ride. Riders can choose from the 110k (68 miles)
Metric Century or full 111-mile Century or the 40-mile Cruiser.
All proceeds of the Onion River Century Ride, raffle, and

Library. We try to inspire the love of reading and writing with our
youngest patrons. More than any other skill the ability to read well
allows a child to succeed in school, learn about the world around
us and function well in our society. The Kellogg-Hubbard Library
has the books, materials and programs to support children as they
take their first steps as a life-long learner.

Gambill said he is excited by this program, which features new

Finishing my time with the MCO by presenting a world premiere by a local composer that features local soloists, feels like a

supporting our local pool of gifted musicians with exciting performing opportunities, he said.
Gambill is leaving the MCO to devote his attention to the

the air and look more green than they actually are. If you think
the Vermont renewable power industry is leading the way, ask
yourself, leading the way where? And for whom?
Carbon taxes and RECS are just one struggling industrys
attempt to get state government to rescuethem from having a
financially weak product by handing them their competitions
money. Real carbon reduction will come when New England
energy planners prioritize existing high-volume, low-carbon generators like hydro and nuclear. Until then, we will just add tiny
amounts of renewable power every year while burning more and
more fossil fuels. This is not a problem solver for global warming
or for fixing the out of control spending in Montpelier.

Editor,
We are very proud of the way that the citizens of Barre went
about cleaning the roadsides and parks in the city. Participants
filled over 400 green up bags last week and covered over 20 miles
of streets that desperately needed help. Spaulding High School
itself had about 100 student volunteers and more than 60 community members selected streets and picked up bags at our bag
pickup sites! A special thanks goes to the city workers who collected the bags around the city. Though Green Up Week was a
tremendous success, it is important to remember to continue to
clean up these streets on our own time and to keep Barre as clean
and healthy as we can.

Editor,
Once again some legislators want us all to pay a carbon tax so
Vermont can lead the way in carbon reduction. Missing from this
rhetoric is the fact that Vermont once DID lead the way. When
Vermont Yankee was operating, we had the lowest carbon emissions per capita for electricity production.
Then Vermont Yankees power contract expired in March 2012
and the plant closed in December 2014. Vermont went from enjoying a healthy, affordable, steady diet of low-cost, carbon-free
power to a brownish admixture of nuclear, hydro, natural gas, coal
and oil power, with a garnish of in-state renewable. Research
shows that in-state renewable power has grown by just six percent
of the total power load since March 2012. That six percent solution is really no solution at all climate-wise, because the renewable industry sells its renewable energy credits to out-of-state gas,
coal and oil power producers so they can keep pouring smoke into

ligament or any of the other well known knee problems, what you
have is severe arthritis in your knee and you are old! I have to tell
you I wasnt sure if I was relieved or not. I just could hardly believe that the excruciating knee pain that I had was primarily Old
Age. She also told me, are you ready for this, that I had to exercise
every day and come to the pool twice a week or I would be in a
wheelchair by next winter. Needless to say I am doing everything
that she said and even made arrangements to continue at the Cape.
What a good woman, right?
Well, that is what I thought, too. And not even just good but
because I was so wonderful, I had reached the end of problems.
What a dope! First, I should tell you that I have the most wonderful
dentist in the world. I would walk (!) a million miles to see Steve
Zonies because he had gone far and above what is expected to keep
a few teeth in my mouth. Before I went to St. Lucia, he came down
the night before I left at 8:30 to repair a chipped front tooth. And
then about a week ago, he came down on Sunday afternoon to repair the same tooth, another chip. Now, a few days later I went in,
during his work hours, thank God, and he looked at still another
chip. This time he told me that it was no longer able to be repaired
because he had repaired it over nine times! So, we decided that a
cap was the only way to go. Remember this is my front tooth. So
he ground down that old tooth to a tiny little pointer and glued on a
temporary cap. Now knowing me you must know what is coming.
Of course, the cap has fallen off, oh probably nine times in less
than a week. And as I sit here, right now, I have no front tooth, just
a little fang! It is Sunday and I refuse to call him again. I did go to
our local drugstore and bought some tooth glue and I am waiting
for Malcolm to come home in order to glue that cap in, just one
more time.
As I sit here, I have a bad back, a very bad old knee and just a
fang in my mouth. And I hate to think that I dont think that there
is nothing else that could go wrong. Of course, my toes are killing
me too and I know the answer, just arthritis and this time I am not
telling Malcolm, my doctor or even Steve Zonies. I now believe
the old adage, Old Age is a B*tch!
n 1868, General Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued an order naming the 30th day of
May, for the purpose of strewing with flowers
or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense
of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie
in almost every city, village or hamlet churchyard in the land...
Vermont first celebrated Memorial Day in 1876. In New York
State, each town must provide veterans an appropriate parade on
Memorial Day.
Originally, May 30 was devoted to those who served in the Civil War.
Memorial Day is now dedicated to those who served in all wars. It is not
a day of celebration, but a day of mourning and remembrance.
Because the original purpose of Memorial Day was to honor
those who fought in the Civil War, it seems appropriate to write
about Vermonts contributions to the war. Throughout the Civil
War, Vermont backed up with action its long-voiced sentiment
about freedom.
Gov. Erastus Fairbanks called for a special session of the Vermont General Assembly on the day of President Lincolns proclamation of emergency, relating to the impending fight between the
states. In 1861, the Legislature responded by voting $1 million to
the war effort.
When President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation,
the Vermont General Assembly passed the following resolution:
Resolved that we cordially approve of the recent Emancipation Proclamation of the President of the United States,
as just in principle and wise in policy as a measure of the
suppression of the rebellion. And that Vermont will cheerfully
respond to any call for material and to assist in a vigorous
prosecution of the war until the authority of the general government is fully established throughout the entire country.

New Waits River Country Store Hosts
Successful Grand Opening Celebration
The weather held out and the community turned out last
Saturday to officially welcome Heather Paye and her staff at
the recently opened Waits River Country Store.
The store had been closed for almost 1 year before Paye
re-opened last fall. Weve been very well received by the
community since the first day, reports Paye who is aided by
a great staff of 10 and will be open seven days a week.
Paye has added some nice touches and renovations.
Basically, were more open and brighter inside, she notes
adding weve got bread, milk, juices, beer, wine, groceries
and even some local crafts and antiques (more coming), plus
the best deli (deviled eggs are a specialty) and meats
around.
It really helped this winter to have VAST re-route their
nearby snowmobile trail to come by our store and take advantage of the non-ethanol gas we offer.
The Waits River Country Store is open Monday-Thursday
5:30 am 8 pm; Friday and Saturday until 9 pm; and Sunday
7 am 6 pm. -GH

Special thanks this month to all our community volunteers who have provided their expertise in our Financial Literacy Workshop Series!
Already, we have learned about fraud and identity theft, budgeting, internet security, and reverse

Caccavo will present on estate planning, on June

131 South Main St., suite 4 in the Wall Street
Complex. Workshops are free to attend, but a
head count is appreciated so please call 479-9512
to sign up.

E.T. Wristwatch
Q: I have an E.T. wristwatch.
What is it worth?
-- Carl, Salt Lake City, Utah
A: Steven Spielbergs E.T.
The Extra Terrestrial opened
in theaters in 1982, the same
year your watch was made by
Nelsonic. Occasionally this
watch pops up in shops and at
antique malls and is generally
priced in the $25 to $100
range. The higher end price is
for the watch in its original
box and in mint to near-mint
condition.
***
Q: I have a partial set of
Harlequin dinnerware, and I
wonder what you can tell me
about this pattern.
-- Mark, Norman, Oklahoma
A: Harlequin dinnerware was
produced by Homer Laughlin
China Company of Newell,
West Virginia, starting in
1938. The pattern was marketed exclusively by the
Woolworth five-and-dime
stores and was extremely popular. A special set was issued
to celebrate Woolworths
100th anniversary in 1979.
Changes were made so the
newer pieces could be more
easily distinguished from the
earlier ones.
***
Q: I have an old sewing
machine that has been in my
family for at least a century. It
is a Household machine.
What can you tell me about
it?

Don't you wish you had a garage this past winter? This three bedroom,

* Last months Earth Day got me
thinking about how many plastic
bottled beverages my family goes through. I
have found six glass reusable bottles that can be
run through the dishwasher, and I store them in
the refrigerator in a cardboard six-pack holder. I
still want the convenience of grabbing a bottle of
water from the fridge, but I feel better knowing
that Im not contributing to a plastic problem.
