The Brief

Considerations

Context & Target Audience

Solution

To design a secret 7 Vinyl Cover for a chosen track

without revealing the artist or song title.

There are several considerations which needed to be

thought through in regards to the brief, such as the
track and artist chosen, the tone and feeling the song
projects, as well as the lyrics, allowing for a visual
connection to be made and deciphered.

We take 7 tracks from 7 of the best-known musicians

around and press each one 100 times to 7 vinyl. We
then invite creatives from around the world to interpret
the tracks in their own style for every 7. 700 sleeves
are exhibited and then sold for 50 apiece. You dont
know who created the sleeve, or even which song its
for, until you have parted with your cash - the secret
lies within.

Brief Type

Evaluation

Competition

This is a quick brief I enjoy working on every year as an

escape from my personal briefs, as well as allowing me
to be more illustrative and conceptual with my ideas
and execution. I feel this brief did actually improve my
software skills on Illustrator, and I feel really proud of the
outcome.

Contextual Research

Lyrics
Left you there in the sunlight
In the sunshine by the windowsill in the kitchen
In light of what was to come it was not enough
Just like the cardboard that covered
The missing panes and cracks in our bedroom windows
We should have known they wouldnt keep out the cold
It was not enough
Its not enough
And it never was
And theyll call out with a name by which Id never call you
And well grow out when its time
And the skins weve known no longer fit us
Its not enough and it leaves you tired

Exiting Artwork

Aesthetic Influence

The majority of The Maccabees artwork is very

photographic, minimal and typography based, as seen
on their most recent album Given to the Wild allowing
for this 7 Vinyl cover to be totally different and abstract.

Aesthetically I was very influenced through detailed

stained glass windows, looking at the colours, shapes
and illustrations used.

See you there in the sunlight

In the sunshine by the windowsill in the kitchen
And theyll call out with a name by which Id never call you
All things being well still feel it was not enough

Development: Artwork

Artwork Development
The stained glass window was drawn out digitally in
layers and filled with colours appropriate to the scene
depicted, whilst experimenting with overlays and
gradients to add further depth and tone.
The colours of the illustration have changed considerably
since the development allowing for a better visual
association with the tone of the song, using a colour
filter titled, Horror Blue.

Background

Concept

Taken from this London bands critically acclaimed

third album Given To The Wild. It will be the fifth and
final single taken from it, ahead of the release of a new
album in 2015.

An illustration based 7 Vinyl Cover inspired by the

tone and lyrics of the track itself, reflecting sunshine,
windows, cracked windows and a melancholy feeling.
