After the race won by Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen, the rider from Murcia
declared: “This year I started my season sooner that I am used to as I already have
the Tour Down Under in my legs. Nevertheless the first race in Spain always means
something special and I am very happy I had the opportunity to be at the start this
morning in Palma. The race went in a very traditional way, with some breakaways
and a massive sprint at the seaside to conclude the event. As for me I felt well in a
very fast stage as the average speed was superior to 49 kph. Tomorrow the route
will be slightly different but the final part should again be favorable to the
sprinters. We shall try to go with the breakaways and help team-mate José Joaquín
Rojas in the sprint.”
Alejandro Valverde will participate tomorrow in the second event of the Challenge,
the Cala Millor Trophy, before flying to France where the Mediterranean Tour will
start on Wednesday.
