Why do the numbers matter?"

Students who check out more earn better
scores. Data from the recent South Carolina
Lance study shows the correlation between
reading and test scores. See page 6 for data
analysis from that study."

Comic Books?? WHY?!

"

Over the years, we added titles to our

superhero, graphic novel, and manga
collection. Graphic books are not just
picture books. Students are exposed
to a rich, complex plot. These books
contain more advanced vocabulary
than traditional books at the same
age/grade/interest level. Also, it is a
way for students who struggle with
traditional text to get into reading and
improve reading skills."

"

Ask us about how you can

incorporate graphic books into next
years lessons/projects!"

Library Use!

Every time a class used the library for research, lesson integration, book talks, or other use,
we counted them. The pie chart breaks down this use into curriculum area. Uses by
student council or administrators for meeting (during the day) are counted under Other. A
total of 409 classes or groups used the media center space."

We conducted 71 collaborative
lessons. Collaboration means that
the teacher and librarian met to
discuss roles (who does what) and
the librarian gave part or all of the
lesson.

Why Are Class Visits to the Library

Important?!

"

We teach students to be better consumers of

information and better producers of information.
The Keith Curry Lance study (see http://
www.scasl.net/the-south-carolina-impact-study
and click on the Phase 1 and Phase II links)
shows that ALL students - particularly both
genders and those who participated in subsidized
or paid meals - were more likely to meet HSAP
standards if the school library received fifteen or
more group visits a week. HSAP has been
phased out however, this data shows that
students do better on testing (in general) if they
are exposed to research and library instruction.

Makerspace!!

Our Makerspace trial started with a Paper Paper

Space in the conference room. Because the room gets
used for individual testing and meetings, we purchased
a cart so the Paper . Paper Space could be placed
wherever the student needed it. Later, we added a
Kinect container and a 3D printer pen. The space and
ideas of what to put there are still evolving. If you have
any ideas/suggestions, please let us know!

The library hosts programs throughout the school year (as shown in the photos).
During 7Reads, students choose a title from a list, usually seven titles but this year
we had eight, and attend an assembly where the author of one or more of the titles
speaks to the entire student body. Right before Christmas break, we encourage
students to check out many many titles in an event we call Infinite Book Check
Out. Banned Books is a great opportunity for us to speak to classes about
literature that is banned or challenged in classes and libraries throughout the
United States. Teen Read Week is an American Library Association program that
encourages students to read literature based on a topic. This was the first year we
celebrated National Library Week with games such as Putt Putt and Stack the
Cups. Finally, we host a party for the students who sign up for and actively
participate in the Principals Reading Honor Roll.

Data from the 2013 South Carolina Lance school library study shows that All students - and
specifically students of both genders, disabled students, and paid meals students - were more
likely to meet HSAP standards, if their school libraries circulated more materials. Similarly, all
students - and specifically male and female students, Black students, and paid meals students
were also more likely to have proficient or better results on HSAP standards.
