concluded that sedimentation occurred simultaneously with the tectonic movements. Sedimentation probably was continuous in the depressed areas.
The water in which the sediments were deposited became fresher continuously from the
Paleogene through the Levantine. Thus, from
the Paleogene through the Tortonian the sediments were marine; during the Sarmatian they
were deposited in a brackish environment; and
during the Pliocene they were laid down in a
freshwater basin where few incursions of
brackish water occurred.

of sulfur).

Prospecting and exploration in the MioPliocene zone of the district of Ploiesti have
led to the discovery of 35 oil- and gas-productive structures.
To January 1, 1968, the region had yielded
about 1,725 million bbl originating from the
following geologic units.

the Meotian and Dacian. The unit is exclusively oil-bearing on the Margineni, Tintea,
Ariceti, Boldeti, and Monteoru structures
(Fig. 14). At Boldesti, the Sarmatian is sandstone with well-rounded grains overlying a
basal pelitic unit. Meotian and Sarmatian producing sandstone beds are separated by a unit
of marl and gritty marl. In the Sarmatian,
within the sandy unit, there is a slight unconformity which is more conspicuous in the
western part of the southern flank. Sarmatian
producing zones have been grouped into two
complexes, Sa-T and Sa-III. In contrast with
the Meotian, which is productive on the entire
structure, the Sarmatian produces only on the
southern flank and in a very small area just
north of the axial fault (Fig. 10).
The area of distribution of Sarmatian accumulations is limited because of the absence of
reservoirs or discontinuity of beds in the north-

Notwithstanding the variation, Oligocene, Miocene, and Meotian oils are generally paraffinic,
whereas the Dacian oil is predominantly naphthenic. In connection with this distribution,
Hlauschek (1950) found that no oil intermediary between those two types is present, a fact
which led him to favor an autochthonous character for the Dacian oil. More recently,
Creanga et al. (1962) confirmed the results obtained by Hlauschek that naphtheno-aromatic
oils are present only in the Dacian.
Dacian oils in several sectors also contain
