Program - Be Bop Babies

Ages - 0 to 24 months

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION - 20 minute baby program to introduce and expose babies
& family to culturally diverse resources and materials to promote cultural literacy.
PROGRAM NEED - Libraries should & need to encourage cultural literacy from the
earliest point possible (infancy). Cultural literacy is the awareness of our own
culture as well as other cultural attitudes and differences and an ability to interact
effectively with other cultures. Babies and children become culturally literate by
being exposed to and absorbing all that is around them. Being culturally literate is
necessary in our complex and diverse world. It allows a child to understand others
and communicate more effectively. Ultimately, babies & children exposed to many
different types of art/music/books will be at a great advantage in navigating all the
varied settings life will present. Additionally, we want to support family
engagement, and I believe this program will appeal to parents & caregivers. That is
a huge positive! This program focuses on jazz, and spontaneous observational
poetry. It is also in keeping with MCPL's mission of enriching and sustaining lives
with new ideas and information.
POTENTIAL PARTNERS - Local daycare centers and private home daycare providers.
PROGRAM SET UP & STRUCTURE - Program will take place at the Olney Library in
the children's area. There is a nice hub there which has ample room and built in
benches. It is also close to our boardbooks and picture books. I will have a box of
musical instruments (shaker eggs and bells) already in place. I will display
pertinent, books such as - "Charlie Parker Played Be Bop" by Chris Raschka, "This
Jazz Man" by Karen Ehrhardt, "Jazz Baby" by Lisa Wheeler & R. Gregory Christie, Ella
Fitzgerald; Tale of a Vocal Virtuoso" by Andrea and Brian Pinkney, and "The Baby
Goes Beep" by Rebecca O'Connell. There will be many, many copies of "More, More,
More Said the Baby" by Vera Williams. Many of these books are non-fiction. I think
it's wonderful for caregivers to show babies these books - just looking at the
illustrations or saying the names of the subjects is great.
Structure - Welcome - Good morning Be Bop Babies, We're gonna have fun, maybe
you'll hop (up bounce), maybe you'll flop (gentle flop) AND maybe you'll go ZOP,
WOP, POP! (bouncing - demonstrated w/stuffed animal so audience can imitate).
Choral Reading - there should be enough copies of "More More More Said the Baby"
for everyone to have one. 1)We will choral read the 1st vignette - Little Guy.

2)Music Time - Move to the music - freeze when it stops - to John Coltrane - "My
Favorite Things"
3)Poem/Rhyme - Hey Little Baby - I love your onesie, hey little baby - I love your
booties, hey little baby - I love your blankie, hey little baby - I love you!
4) Choral read 2nd vignette of " More More More Said the Baby" - Little Pumpkin
5) Pass out instruments - play instruments to "Linus & Lucy" - Vince Guaraldi
6)Poem/rhyme - I don't want to be a sink, it doesn't know how to think, I don't want
to be the floor, that would be a bore, I want to be a baby! Babies are hip, babies are
cool, babies are where it's at!
7) Choral read 3rd vignette of "More More More Said the Baby" - Little Bird
8) Good Bye & Take Home Tips - let everyone know about Freegal - music used
today is available there for free. Expose your baby to all different types of music.
Use any opportunity to narrate (in lyrical cadence) what is going on around you to
your baby. Make a poem or a rhyme out of it. You can do it yourself - anywhere anytime! Audience will be encouraged to stay, mingle, socialize, and enjoy the
library.
EVALUATION - attendance count, and a quick survey.
