DESIGN COMMENTARY: Structural Analysis and design:

1. Based on the given data and assumptions ( listed in the attached project description
document) the typical plan and layout of the commercial building of size 90 X 90 sq. ft and
25 story building with each floor of 10 ft. is taken as example.
2. Different Horizontal and vertical loads are calculated as below. Suspended roof dead load is
assumed as 7.5 lb/ft2. Live load is assumed as 50 lb/ft2 as per table 4.1, ASCE 07 05.
Based on the geometry of the building the wind load is considered as Uniformly distributed
load with an increment of 2 lb/foot for each floor with 10 lb/ foot for between 0 10 feet.
3. Based on the location of the state snow load is estimated as 42 lb/ft2 as per chapter 7, ASCE
7-05 and the building was considered as catogyry no 3 as per table 1.1 ASCE 7-05.
4. The first four Load combinations stated in chapter 2 ASCE/ SEI 07 05 were considered,
and the factors for different loads are taken as 1) Dead load 1.2, 2) wind load 1.6, 3) Live
load 1.0. and 4) Snow load 0.5 are utilized for calculations.
5. The front row beam is analyzed for the above factored loads and Mu and Vu are calculated as
126.8 Kilo Pounds feet and 16.8 Kilo Pounds, Beam W 14X26 is chosen as trail beam and
checked for the three conditions Mu Mn , Vu Vn and the deflection of the beam under
the considered loading conditions. Maximum deflection is calculated as 0.96 inches (max
allowable is span / 240 = 1.5 inches) and found the beam size is adequate as pheriphral beam.
Calculation from beams in the inner rows will differ as they carry double the load carried by
peripheral beams.
6. The size of the corner column of the 25th story is designed by assuming the column as double
symmetrical W shaped column and designed for the Axial compressive loads transferred by
the beams pined to it. After checking for flexural buckling, torsional buckling and combined
buckling the W 16 X 50 is selected as the size of the corner column from 25th 15 storey.
7. Corner Column size at the bottom of the ground floor is chosen as W 24 X 55 is checked all
the above mentioned criteria and found that it is adequate.
8. All the peripheral frames in all the four directions were provided with K shaped bracings to
resist all the lateral loads. HSST 12 X 6 is chosen as universal bracing in all direction ie N-S
or E-W and checked for tensile loads caused by the wind loads and found adequate,
9. The minimum size of the footing under the corner column is estimated as 10 X 10
10. Other information attached with this design commentary is as follows.
Design methodology adopted for design of Steel beams and steel columns is attached as
design reference.

Back of the envelope calculations are captured and presented along with this design
commentary.
