Capitalize on the Internet of Things

Internet of things (IoT) is a technical approach that strives to bring together all kinds
of devices in the world, under a single network that spans the entire globe. The key
aspects of IoT will make the life easy for most people, by bringing their world at their
fingertips. Home automation, industrial automation, smart devices, smart
transportation, public utilities, healthcare, etc., are only some of the industries that
will enjoy the benefits of IoT.
Internet of things is generally regarded as an extension of the internet itself, one of
the most important and widely regarded modern inventions. Internet has essentially
touched every aspect of our lives, and every aspect of every industry out there. Entire
companies had to remodel themselves and come up with new strategies to approach
the internet revolution. The same kind of revolution can be expected when IoT
becomes more popular in the coming years.

Some Estimates
Large players in the technology domain have time and again researched about IoT
and came up with their estimates. For instance, look at some of the estimates given by
Cisco recently.
2020
World population:
7.6 Billion
2015
World population:
7.2 Billion

2010
World population:
6.8 Billion
2003
World population:
6.3 Billion

Connected devices:
25 Billion
3.47 devices per
person

Connected devices:
12.5 Billion
1.84 devices per
person

Connected devices:
0.5 Billion
0.08 devices per
person

Connected devices:
50 Billion
6.58 devices per
person

Ciscos estimate may seem a little too ambitious, but its still the reality that IoT is
probably one of the greatest revolutions seen by mankind, like ever. We can trace the
root of IoT back to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) back in 1999,
where the RFID (radio frequency identification) technology was researched and
developed. This graphic from SRI Consulting explains in detail the technology
roadmap taken by IoT:

IoT envisages a brighter tomorrow when there will be more connected devices than
you have today. In essence, the number of dumb devices connected to the internet
with the help of sensors and high-speed wireless will be much more than the number
of smart devices in existence, ever.
Where do we see the manifestation of IoT in real life? An example would be the
research project by HP known as CeNSE or the Central Nervous System for the Earth,
a project aimed at placing sensors almost everywhere. HP Labs, HPs innovative
research wing, has given rise to this idea, which aims to transmit sensor data at
nearly the speed of light, so that you will be able to know what is happening to the
planet from anywhere.

One of the very first applications that CeNSE will find will be at a Shell oil rig,
according to a report from the Fortune.
CeNSE aims to embed trillions of tiny sensors to our environment in order to track
every heartbeat of our beloved planet.

IoT: Innovative Connections

Today, IoT is at its basic form, without many commercial deployments. But in the
future, IoT will drive growth in a large number of industries. Benefits to many
industries will be ground-breaking. Commercial and residential applications of IoT
will be on the rise. Some industries that will get the fruit of this revolution will be
technology, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, home automation, industrial
automation, transportation, etc.
As an example, look at how Tesla Motors operates. It produces completely connected
electric cars, which come with a full-touch dashboard and over-the-air software
updates. Every functionality of each Tesla car, such as the Model S, is maintained and
operated with software. Due to this reason, Tesla avoided a major recall in Jan 2014
by the National Highway Safety Administration. 29,000 Tesla cars were to be recalled
at that time, but instead of recalling those cars and having them repaired in repair
shops, Tesla simply pushed out a software update to those cars. The update was done
during the time when the cars were turned off, so that it is accomplished smoothly
without inconveniencing their owners.
When IoT becomes an industrial reality, such recalls will be a thing of the past.

The Importance of IoT

Just as how the web has gone through various stages of development, IoT also has its
own milestones. Evolution of IoT is termed as one of the greatest evolutions to
happen to the internet itself. This is the first time ever that such huge number of
devices are slated to become part of the web.

This will lead us also to a data storage revolution that comes in the form of new
technologies to record, categorize, and analyze the huge level of data created by these
devices. IoT-generated data can be greater than the entire volume of data in existence
today.
Gartners estimate of IoT connected devices by 2020 will exceed 26 billion units,
amounting to an incremental revenue exceeding 300 billion dollars. This volume
growth will amount to almost double data growth from 2012 till 2020, reaching
almost 40 zettabytes of datai.e., 40,000,000,000,000 GB of data. Such huge volume
growth has to be properly segregated and analyzed, which can be quite a huge task
for existing storage systems. Also, the data of this range will give massively accurate
insights for businesses worldwide. This is a major reason why companies should
capitalize on IoT.
