What is terroir?
The French term, terroir (pronounced tear-wah), is the term for the conditions that make a specific grapegrowing site, and its wine, distinctive. It comes from a philosophy, originated in Europe, that a multitude of
influences in nature surrounding a vineyard, or wine region, create a wines character. These natural factors
include soil composition, day and nighttime temperatures, the amount of rainfall, the direction of the sun, just
to name a few.
Terroir explains why some of the best California Pinot Noir, for example, originate in the regions of
Carneros and Russian River. They may be separated by about 30 miles but they share similar soils and
experience the same cooling effects from bodies of water nearby either the ocean, in the case of the Russian
River area, or San Pablo Bay for the Carneros region. Both regions produce rich and complex wines made from
Pinot Noir grapes that reflect their similar terroir.
Over centuries of winemaking around the world, it has been learned that the uniqueness of a specific
location is what creates the personality of a wine. Although the French word terrior has no English
translation, it has become a term used everywhere to describe this interaction of the many factors that
influence a grape-growing site.
So, the next time you taste a great wine, whether Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or
Zinfandel, take notice of where the grapes were grown. If a distinct site is listed on the label as the origin of the
grapes, such as the name of a specific vineyard or an official wine geographic region (also known as an
appellation) know that you are tasting more than just the grapes that made the wine. You are experiencing
terrior everything in nature that makes that site or region, unique.

BY JOSH STEIN
has the most impact on two years crops because the weather often
flipflops quite quickly, and rain at an early point can be helpful to
bring temperatures up while later in the season causing crop
damage via hail or thunderstorms winds. Shattering of the bloming
flowers can disrupt clusters or keep them from being fertilized, yet
when faced with a frost event earlier in the year, rain is welcomed as
it brings the temperature up above freezing. Summer and autumn
heat can also be an issue because too-high a temperature can cause
vines to shut down, shriveling or even sunburning grapes, and also
potentially killing the vine in the process, especially if there is little
to no water left at the end of season.
This is not our first go-around with drought in California wine
country, of course. There are actually lots of options for mitigation,
and the best, as you might expect, are set up so as to help solve
more than one problem. Believe it or not, something as simple as
low trellising versus high has an impact as far as weather goes. Low
trellises in the wrong locales are more subject to frost damage, and
higher trellises can provide shade for adjacent rows. How the trellis
is trimmed in winter and early spring prior to budbreak is thus one
strategy, and there is projected to be a move back to California
Sprawl from the VSP candelabra currently seen all over as the
North Coast replants in the next few years for this reason: not only
does this provide different vine growth and Brix gains, but it also
helps as regards frost or hail damage during April and May, when
the buds break and the vines flower, and impacts overall vine water
needs, making it possible to produce more on less irrigation.
Mechanical options to work around water deficits abound, too.
The wind machines, those twirling engines and fans on poles; the
Inverted Sinks or Air Dams, which essentially turn the wind
machine to provide a frost sink to pull cold air down and away
from vines on hillsides and slopes; and smudge pots, the gas fired
heaters for the end of vineyard rows which work in combination
with wind machines all are ways to work in with the shapes of
the land itself to mitigate the negatives of weather while allowing
the terroir, the locational distinctiveness, to still show through in
the grapes and finished wines by moving the weather since the
vines really cannot. Its not always easy or cheap, but the results are
worth it, no? Enjoy!
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a dozen years, and, in addition
to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which produces a nationally and
internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and donates a percentage of its sales, he
regularly consults for wineries and organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via
their subsidiaries, Discrete Wine Support Services and Napa Valley Writing Services.

For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially here in California where wineries and tasting
rooms abound. You can find wineries specializing in red wines of all
types, those that are famous for their white wines and others who
pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and
close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Here are some tips that have proven
to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of
wine tasting all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water)
and something to snack on crackers or a baguette. Many wineries
have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can
make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us to
eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine.
Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you make time for
lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine,
and remember that you dont have to drink everything poured into
your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a
pitcher of water to wash out your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a
stupid question, and they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you only like
reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of
starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a
good guide. Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never
hurts to remind everyone.
If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list,
ask. There might be a bottle around that was opened for a trade
tasting or by the winemaker. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep in
mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour,
so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include
smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines.
Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back home. Youll pay
more, and besides, whats the point?
Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen
or more small-to-medium premium producers. They are scattered
throughout the area and more are opening all the time.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like art: if
you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no more
than a phone call hire a transportation company to do the driving.

As the warmth of summer days roll into Napa Valley, a fool-proof way to make the most of
the season is a day spent at the Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga. One of our favorite stops
every year, Bennett Lane is known for its succulent Cabernets, their signature feasting wine,
Maximus, and for one of the finest visitor experiences in the valley. Founded by Randy and Lisa
Lynch in 2003, Bennett Lanes off-the-beaten-track location and friendly tasting room offers
visitors to Napa a secret gem and a great way to learn about and try some of Napas best
wines in a more intimate setting.
Bennett Lanes Cabs have continuously garnered critical acclaim. In the short period that the
winery has been open they have received an incredible 36 scores of 90+ points between Wine
Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Year after year the popular blend
of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah has won accolades from critics and visitors alike. The red
feasting wine, as Maximus is affectionately referred to on the label, demonstrates owners Randy
and Lisa Lynchs commitment to making wine an integral part of entertaining with family and
friends. The current vintage of 2009 is available in the tasting room at $35 per bottle this is the
best deal in the valley.
Bennett Lanes wines are crafted to be approachable, yet complex or what owner Randy
Lynch calls the best of both worlds, meaning you can drink them today, but they are structured
enough to cellar for several years. My goal is for us to make consistent wines both in quality
and taste from year to year, so that consumers can trust Bennett Lane wines, he says.
Bennett Lane has quickly become one of the top vintners in the valley and has upgraded their
tasting room to match the amazing accolades that the wines have received in their first few years.
It is fast becoming the must see destination for wine lovers visiting Napa Valleys AVA of
Calistoga. In addition to the elegantly appointed tasting bar, they are sharing their new custom
iPad application for their guests to use for an interactive tasting experience. Guests can not only

read the latest reviews and tasting notes but also find
interesting food pairing recipes, share their favorite new wines on
Facebook, and email their personal wine notes home, all while
tasting a glass of Napas finest. Owner Randy Lynch notes, As a
small winery we strive to not only make the best hand-crafted
wines available, but also one of the most educational and
enjoyable tasting experiences around for guests coming to visit
one of the premier wine growing regions in the world.
The Signature Tasting Flight at Bennett Lane is $20 and
includes four of Bennett Lanes wines: 2012 Reserve Chardonnay,
2009 Maximus Red Feasting Wine, 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
and one special selection from their wine library. Cabernet
enthusiasts can upgrade to their Reserve Tasting Flight for $45,
and get a chance to try three of the wineries top tier Cabernets,
including the Lynch Family Vineyard Calistoga Cabernet with
less than 100 cases produced. Be sure to put Bennett Lane on
your short-list of must-visit tasting rooms as the production is
small and the Cabernets sell out quickly. Visiting Bennett Lane
affords tasters another rarity with a small winery a likely run-in
(and perhaps a last minute barrel tasting if youre lucky!) with
owners Randy and Lisa Lynch.
Bennett Lane Winery is located in an understated
Mediterranean-style building at the secluded and beautiful
northern end of the Napa Valley, and is considered well worth the
drive.

KENDALL-JACKSON
WINE ESTATE & GARDENS
Immerse yourself in the best farm-to-table
wine and food experiences in Sonoma County!
BY SUE STRAIGHT, THE WINE WENCH
26
Picture this you are heading north on Highway 101 and just past Santa Rosa,
you see what appears to be a French chateau, complete with vineyards and gardens,
plunked down just off the freeway on your left at Fulton Road. Stop. You simply must
not miss this place!
The whole property is a feast for the senses; birds singing, bees buzzing and
snatches of laughter and conversation delight the ears, scents of flowers, herbs (and of
course wine and food) tempt the nose and the riot of color from the flower garden
and the overall aesthetic beauty of this place please the eye and soothe the soul.
You should allow yourself at least a couple of hours for the Kendall-Jackson
Sensory Experience give yourself about an hour for the food and wine pairing and
enough time to stroll through the gardens a three and a half acre wonderland of
botanical magic. There is the Wine Sensory Garden (my personal favorite), where
fruit trees and bushes and herbs and flowers that exemplify a particular wine varietal
are artfully laid out, complete with signs explaining descriptors and affinities. Along
with the Wine Sensory Garden, the Vegetable/Herb Garden is a growing cornucopia
of edible plants that the in-house chefs use in their wine and food pairings.
Speaking of wine and food pairing, the friendly and knowledgeable staff of
Kendall- Jackson Wine Estate & Gardens creates a variety of absolutely unforgettable
experiences, including the Garden Tour & Tasting, the Blind Tasting Experience,
the Farm to Table Lunch and more. I opted for the wine and food pairing and I can
tell you firsthand, this experience is well worth every penny! I was treated like royalty,
and Im sure other guests will feel the same!
If wine and food pairing isnt your idea of a good time or if time is an issue, you
may taste wines at the bar there is something for everyone here! Whichever
experience you choose (any or all!), the end result is a delicious, fun education at an

Dont think you can do it? Think again. On May 31, Rodney
Strong Vineyards and Vineman are adding a sprint triathlon to
complement the Olympic distance race for those not quite ready for
the longer distance triathlon. This early summer race is the perfect
distance involving a .5 mile swim, bike 12.4 miles and run 3.1 miles,
in which participants can finish in under an hour.
This state-of-the-art triathlon race is set in the heart of Monte Rio,
a vacation wonderland for athletes and families to cheer their loved
ones on, or enjoy a little get-away for themselves. The swim is set in
the lazy Russian River, just four miles downstream from Johnsons
Beach. The bike course follows the river and travels through the old
growth redwood trees. Those competing, in the Olympic distance
race will ride to the quaint coastal town of Jenner and back. The run
is held on the course that was once the home of the Moscow Road
Race, a popular run from the boom days of the 1970s. The run
course is flat, fast and shaded most of the way.
Mark Mathewson, Director of Hospitality and DTC Marketing for
Rodney Strong Vineyards had plenty to say about this wine country
challenge. The Vineman Monte Rio Triathlon exposes its athletes to
all that we love about Sonoma County: the beauty of the Russian
River in the swim, the ocean views on the bike ride to Jenner and a
majestic redwoods canopy on the run course. All thats missing from
a perfect Sonoma County experience is a winery, a natural fit for

Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

under $5, the Robert Mondavi Winery Summer Concert Series is now
one of the Wine Countrys most popular and widely attended concert
events. Robert Mondavi Winery has played host to more than 100
performers showcasing worldrenowned and award-winning
R&B, jazz and pop artists alike.

savings of $25.
Surrounded by acres of beautiful vineyards, guests are treated to
top performers in contemporary music while enjoying the winerys
intimate concert venue, The Green.
Bring a picnic meal to enjoy with friends on The Green or
purchase an assortment of prepared foods from local purveyors
onsite. Rodney Strong Vineyards wines are available for purchase as
well as an array of non-alcoholic beverages.
No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed. Low-back chairs or
blankets are recommended for all lawn seating. No high back chairs
or umbrellas. Parking is complimentary and attendants will point the
way. The famous Russian River fog usually arrives in the early
evening, so guests are advised to bring jackets and sweaters.
Rodney Strong Vineyards is dedicated to crafting world-class
wines that capture the essence of Sonoma County. Rodney Strong
sustainably farms 14 estate vineyards and produces wines from
Sonoma Countys finest appellations Alexander Valley, Russian River
Valley, Chalk Hill, Knights Valley and Sonoma Coast. The winery was
founded in 1959 by Sonoma County wine pioneer Rodney D. Strong
as the 13th bonded winery in the county. It was purchased by the
Klein family, a third generation California farming family, in 1989.
The company aspires to conserve and protect the environment in all
its operations.
Rodney Strong Vineyards is located at 11455 Old Redwood
Highway, off Highway 101 just south of the town of Healdsburg in
Sonoma County. The winery is just one hour north of the Golden
Gate Bridge.

search for a chef with the mastery, vision and passion to create the
perfect pairing menu for our wines said Steve Ledson. In Yoshi, we
think weve found that Chef, and much, much more. His classic
Japanese training, French culinary education and experience,
combined with his love of wine and zeal for experimenting has
resulted in extraordinarily creative pairings that bring out the best in
both the wine and food. We are thrilled to have him as our executive
chef at Zina Lounge and are excited for the wine and food
experiences we will create together.
This exciting, high-concept wine and food experience housed in
the elegant Ledson Hotel on the historic plaza further establishes
Sonoma as a world-class destination for fine wine and the culinary
arts.

p.m.) while guests nosh on bites and nibbles created by Park Avenue
Catering. Following the opening reception, guests will be seated and
enjoy a gourmet, four-course meal highlighting local Mendocino
products prepared by celebrated owner and Executive Chef at Park
Avenue Catering, Bruce Riezenman. Each course will be paired with
multiples wines from the 2012 vintage (full menu with pairings listed
above). Every table will host a different winemaker or a winery
representative from a Coro winery to answer any questions guests
might have about Coro and the wines being poured. The evening will
conclude with a selection of beautifully handmade desserts and treats,
including a Coro sorbet, paired with ports and dessert wines from the
participating Coro wineries.
Wineries participating in Coro Mendocinos 2012 Annual Release
Party include: Barra of Mendocino, Brutocao Cellars, Clos du Bois,
Golden Vineyards, McFadden Vineyard, Parducci Wine Cellars, Rays
Station and Testa Vineyards. As a parting gift, each couple will receive
a complete collection of the eight 2012 Coro wines produced by
these labels to take home and enjoy (a value of $320).
Cost per couple to attend the Release Party is $700, and includes
the complete collection of 2012 Coro wines (a $350 value).
The Coro wines have evolved over the last 12 years as fullbodied, fruit-forward products that stand out as complex and
different from standard varietal bottlings, said Dennis Patton, a
founding Coro winemaker. In moving the dinner to San Francisco,
we hope to introduce Coro wines to individuals who are not familiar
with the brand, and have them fall in love with our story and wines,
just as our loyal and long-time fan base has.
