January 10 No Class snow day.


January 12 Discussed how to download and print the syllabus. Illustrated how to determine a
good graphing window for the graph of a function. Discussed how to find intercepts for a graph,
how to sketch a graph, how to determine y-axis and x-axis symmetry. Homework: Determine
a good graphing window for the six cubic functions on page 3 and copy the dimensions on your
homework. Know the trig values (sin, cos, tan, cot, sec, csc) of angles with a measure of

January 14 Worked one homework problem, then collected the homework. Discussed
determining origin symmetry, finding point(s) of intersections of two graphs, and entering data to
create an equation of the line of best fit or regression equation. Students solved three
systems of equations on the board. Homework: Section 1.1 1-4, 15, 16, 23, 27, 33, 37, 59,
61, 65, and 67.
January 19 Returned graded homework. Answered questions about entering data and
completing regression. Discussed writing equations of lines using slopes, points, parallels and
perpendiculars. Homework: Section 1.1 75

January 21 Demonstrated how to log into WebAssign. Quiz on homework. Discussed
functions: explicit, implicit, ranges and domains. Homework: Define real-valued function of a
real variable; Section 1.2 79, 81, and 83; and Section 1.3 3, 6, 9, 13, 15, 17, and 19.
January 24 Returned quiz. Gave quiz on definition. Discussed domain, ranges, and evaluating
functions. Homework: Know the domains, ranges and names of the 8 functions on page 22,
know the domains and ranges of all trig functions, Section 1.3 10-12 all and 21 29 odd.
January 26 Returned quiz. Discussed translations of the basic functions students were to
memorize. Discussed composition of functions. Homework: KNOW THE DEFINITION OF A REALVALUED FUNCTION OF A REAL VARIABLE.

January 28 Do Over for the quiz on the definition of a function. Discussed graphing
piecewise functions, domains and ranges of composition of functions, and translating functions.
A WebAssign will open Monday after class. Homework: Section 1.3 55, 56, 57, 61, 63, 69, 71.
Section 1.4 7, 12, 15.
January 31 Returned the do over quiz. Discussed what an inverse functions is, which
functions have them, and how to find the rule. Disussed how to verify that functions are inverse
functions. Homework: WebAssign . . . Section 1.5 1-7 odd, 9-12 all, 17 27 odd, 29 and 35.
February 2 Discussed inverse sine function, inverse cosine function, and exponential
functions. Explanation was given about the domain and range of these new functions as well as
review of what the domain and range of an inverse function is compared to the initial function.
Homework: Memorize the domain and range of the inverse sine, inverse cosine and exponential
functions. Add the exponential function to the 8 functions that you already know how to
translate. Homework: Section 1.5- 73-85 odd, 95, 96, 97, 102, 102, 103, 117. Section 1.6
25, 26, 30 and 31.
February 4 No class ice day.
February 7 Discussed inverse tangent, inverse cotangent, inverse secant, and inverse
cosecant. Students should know the domains and ranges of the inverse trig functions as well as
familiar angle values associated with them. Homework: Section 1.5 95- 102 all, 117 137 odd,
and 161 166 true/false.
Februray 9 Quiz. Discussed the inverse function of the natural exponential function the
natural logarithmic function. Discussed properties of logarithms. Discussed solving equations
using inverse trig functions, algebraic manipulation of exponents, or algebraic manipulation of
bases. Used the properties of logarithms to simplify logarithmic expressions.

Test on February 18 covering Chapter 1 through part of 2.2. Homework: Know the domain
and range of the natural logarithmic function. Section 1-5 139 146 and section 1.6 9-21
multiples of 3 and 87 102 multiples of 3. TEST if Friday, 18th.
February 11 Discussed exponential/logarithmic equations, why calculus is needed to solve
certain problems, how to develop a table to evaluate a limit. Homework: Know a couple of
applications of calculus from the table in Section 2.1. p.56 105-108, p. 67 1-5, and p 74-75
1-10. Review/study session is today at 12:30 in MCC 102.
February 14 Discussed the definition of a limit, and how to evaluate a limit by viewing only
the graph or making a table. Homework: Define limit (the epsilon/delta definition), in Section
2.2 problems 11 29 odd, and 35.
February 16 Quiz on the definition. Discussed #35 from homework. Discussed what might
be on the test on Friday, then more discussion about the meaning of delta and epsilon in the
definition of limit. TEST on FRIDAY may be started early (by 7:30).
February 18 TEST Homework for Monday Section 2.2 - #37, 41, 42 and 67.
February 21 Discussed properties of limits and how to analytically evaluate limits.
Homework: Section 2.3 6 42 multiplies of three.
February 23 Collected the homework. Pointed out three special limits. Discussed the greatest
integer function and continuity of a function at a point. Homework: Section 2.3 51. 57. 63.
67, 69, 75, 79, and Section 2.4 1-6, 7 , 13, 17, 31 34. Define a function f is continuous
at a point .
February 25 Returned homework. Discussed removable and non-removable continuity.
Discussed the position and velocity problems in Section 2.3. Homework: Section 2.3 109,
111, 123 128. Section 2.4 36 60 multiples of 3, 77.
February 28 Discussed the Intermediate Value Theorem, infinite limits and the definition of
derivative. Homework: Section 2.4 93, 103, 105, 111-114 and Section 2.5 13, 19, 21, 25,
31, 37, 45, 49, 51, and 55. Define: derivative (in section 3.1). Students wanted to have a test
before the break instead of the week after, so a test is planned for March 11. It will cover

March 2 Correct WEB ASSIGN opens today!!! If you did the other one, its a bonus. Quiz
on definition of a derivative. Quiz bonus. . . define continuity. Demonstrated how to use the
definition to find the derivative. Used the definition to derive the formula for taking the
derivative of a constant function, the identity function, and the Power Rule. KNOW THE
DERIVATIVE RULES. Homework: Section 3.1 7 , 10, 17, 21, 25, and 35.
March 4 Returned quiz from last time. Worked two homework problems. Discussed the rest of
the basic derivative rules and how to rewrite functions to use the rules. Homework: Section
3.2 10 55 multiples of 5 and 57, 63 and 65.
KNOW RULES FOR THE DERIVATIVE OF A CONSTANT FUNCTION, THE IDENTITY
FUNCTION, POWER RULE, CONSTANT MULTIPLE RULE, SUM OR DIFFERENCE OF
FUNCTIONS, SINE, COSINE, AND NATURAL EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION.
March 7 Quiz on homework. Class discussion included how to use the product rule, quotient
rule, and derivation of tangent, cotangent, secant and cosecant rules. Homework: KNOW all
the derivative rules. Section 3.2 101 and 103, Section 3.3 5 55 multiples of 5, 61, 67, 69, 71
and 81. TEST ON FRIDAY!
March 9 Answered homework questions. Test on Friday covering Section 2.2 through 3.3.
March 11 Test
March 21 Return test. Discussed Chain Rule and Generalized Power rule. Students worked
additional examples on the board. Homework: Section 3.4 3- 36 multiples of 3, 51 57, 60,
and 63.
March 23 Answered one question on homework and collected the homework. Discussed
higher order derivatives, and derivatives of: exponential functions, absolute value function, and
logarithmic functions. Demonstrated how to use the Math menu and nderiv to find the value of a
derivative at a particular value. Homework: Section 3.3 79, 81, 89, 93, 96-105 multiples of 3,
131-136. Section 3.4 69, 77, 81, 93, 107, 111, 115, 133, 135 and 143.
March 25 Answered one homework question and discussed using the graphing calculator to
find the slope of a tangent line at a point, then discussed and demonstrated Implicit

differentiation. Homework: WEB ASSIGN is open and due by midnight Sunday night!, Section
3.4 155, 157, 159, 163 and Section 3.5 7, 12, 31, 36, and 37.
March 28 Answered homework questions about several problems. Discussed logarithmic
differentiation and derivatives of the inverse trig functions. Homework: Complete the
WebAssign deadline was extended until tonight. Section 3.5 65, 71, 77, 81 and Section 3.6
15, 23, 27, 31, 39, 45, and 49.
March 30 Demonstrated Theorem 3.16 with several problems then worked /set up several rate
of change problems with respect to time. IF YOU MISSED CLASS READ SECTION 3.7 ESPECIALLY
EXAMPLES 2 AND 3. Next test will probably be April 15 Homework: Section 3.6 1-7 odd
59, 67, 69; and Section 3.7 3, 7, 16, 18, and 19.
April 1 Worked several homework problems. Discussed critical numbers and relative extrema.

extrema (max/min) of a function. Illustrated the factor analysis technique instead of just using
