PROBLEMS/GUIDE QUESTION

3. Let (

T1

) be the tension on the inclined plane and (

T2

) be the tension

attached to the hanging mass.

Since (

T1

m
) is on the inclined plane, its acceleration is given at 2.00 s 2 .

Therefore:
(

T1

m
) = (10kg) (2.00 s 2 ) = 20N

Since (

T2

) is both hanging and attached to the pulley, it does have 2

acceleration, one which is the gravitational constant and one is the acceleration
given. Therefore:
(

T2

m
m
2
) = (20kg) (9.8 s )-(20kg) (2.00 s 2 ) = 156N

I () = (

T2

T1

) (r)

I () = (156-20N) (.25m)
m
I (2.00 s 2 ) = (136N) (.25m) (.25m)
I = 4.25 kg .

INTERPRETATION OF RESULLTS (ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION)

1.) Compare the experimental values of the moments of inertia of the disk
and the ring. Why is the moment of inertia of one of them greater than
the other?
In analyzing the experiment values of the moments of inertia of the disk
and the ring, the group was able to get an experimental value of
2
87951.01454 g cm

2
for the disk while 49875.64976 g cm

for the

ring. This is primarily because in computing or determining the moment

of inertia, The working equation of the moment of inertia of disk is
1
M Disk R2
2

while for the ring it is

1
M Ring ( R 21+ R 22)
. The mass and
4

radius of the disk is bigger than that of the ring that therefore resulted
to a higher amount of moment of inertia for the disk.
2.) Why is the moment of inertia of the disk greater than that of the ring
even through their masses are almost the same?
The moment of inertia of the disk will really be bigger than of the ring
even if their masses are almost the same because the disk has a longer
radius and will therefore say that it is heavier than the ring which will
result to a bigger amount of moment of inertia of the disk.

3.) Why is the moment of inertia of the disk greater when it is rotated
about the center compared to when it is rotated about its diameter?
The moment of inertia of the disk greater when it is rotated about the
center compared to when it is rotated about its diameter primarily
because it exerts lower acceleration than of the ring which is fast
because of the effect of gravity since the mass is having a downward
direction.

1.) Moment of inertia is the rotational analog of mass. If the mass of a

particular rigid body constant, why is its moment of inertia not constant?
There are external forces that act on the system and it is the reason
why the moment of inertia is not constant. One example of it in the
experiment is the radius of the shaft that is used, even if the mass is
constant, and the added mass is also constant, once you use a different
shaft, its moment of inertia will eventually change. Another thing to be
considered is the axis of rotation.
2.) What are the factors that affect the moment of inertia of a rigid body?
I can conclude that based on the working equation of computing the
moment of inertia of a rigid body, the factors that can affect its
moment of inertia are the mass of the rigid body itself plus the mass
added if ever there is and at the same time, the radius of its axis of
rotation.
3.) What causes the rotational motion of a rigid body to change? How is the
moment of inertia related to angular acceleration?
Torque is simply the main reason why rotational motion change. Torque is
equals to radius multiplied by the force, radius affects its motion while
the force affects the amount of acceleration that it can generate and at

the same time Torque is also equals to the product of moment of inertia
and angular acceleration.
