1.1 docWise: Self Access to Maintenance Documentation is a CBT program

developed by ENGLISH FOR AIRCRAFT . It is designed to assist aircraft mechanics and
technicians, or trainees and engineering students, in acquiring the language skills they need to
use maintenance documentation in English and in improving their reading techniques through
hands-on use of authentic documents. It is the result of over thirty years experience
observing the way technicians actually work and use their documents. As such, it was
specifically designed to interface with technical and on-job training requirements within an
EASA or FAA environment according to ATA (A4A) 100 / 2200 specifications.
docWise is intended for both classroom use and guided self-study. Students are also able to
evaluate their ability before starting to use the course through our website and monitor their
progress by means of ten TEST YOURSELF assessments. Course administrators can follow
up their students' performance and needs through the student files in the data base, which can
be monitored over an internal network.
The philosophy behind docWise is to cultivate the effective interplay of linguistic and
technical skills, common sense, reading techniques, learner autonomy and personal
satisfaction by constant interaction and visualization. Our goal is direct understanding: to
teach technicians the language and skills they actually need and are going to use on their job.
The program is suitable for both stand-alone and for servers with various LAN applications.
A data base allows centralized student monitoring.
All the texts used in the program are taken from manuals in Simplified English, roughly half
and half Boeing and Airbus, on the B 747-400, B 767, A 340 and A 320. Virtually all the
main ATA system chapters are covered, with a procedure and a descriptive text on the same
subject.
The program provides between 100 and 180 hours of student use and enables:
- specific job-related training objectives and content,
- a more efficient use of teacher skills and classroom time,
- greater employee flexibility with regards to shift work and fluctuating workloads,
- reduced per-capita training costs,
- a single company standard and a reliable and relevant means of evaluation,
- easy, centralized monitoring and management of training activity,
- a natural interface with the professional environment
- continuous and individualized learning with greater student motivation

1.2 Licensing conditions

The docWise courseware is essentially intended for institutional use and is distributed under
an operating license. The package features not only the program itself but a cluster of related
and ongoing services to enhance its implementation:

Analysis of an English Language Computer-based Training Program:
Results and Proposal
Introduction
An analysis was requested to investigate the current difficulties related to English language
training, the overall English competence of personnel and the impact of JAR OPS 1
regulations that require documentation of English language knowledge within the
organization.
The result is the proposal that follows in the Conclusion.
Conclusion
It is the conclusion of this proposal that SAS Technical Division purchase the Computerbased training program Self-Access to Maintenance Documentation from English for Aircraft.
Price: The price is for an unlimited license and includes customized visuals, teacher training,
installation and ongoing support. It is a one-time cost.
Motivation: This will enable the Technical Division to train and document in a secure way all
personnel at all levels of English. This single program will also create a standardized level of
ability at a reasonable price. It will also alleviate comprehension difficulties revealed by
NCRs, especially Job Cards and Maintenance Manuals.
Summary of the Analysis
The reduction in training costs is highly significant and this is due to several factors:
1) The biggest savings will be in keeping workers in production (that is the training is
done in off-peak hours).
2) Classroom time (and problems with shifts etc.) is lessened immensely.
3) Additionally, the ability to perform this training at line stations will result in significant
savings.
But we believe that the most important advantage is the quality of the product. The
pedagogical value cannot be over-estimated. It is simply excellent, with its learner
reinforcements and real manual texts. It is also fun top use and teachers both computer
skills and maintenance documentation familiarization. These things are invaluable in
themselves.

We have set up cascade training programmes for thousands of MRO staff and trained
hundreds of technicians as English language facilitators. We have trained aviation and
technical English instructors with both linguistic and technical backgrounds, and linguistic
examiners and raters, for over 20 years.
Materials used are customised to aircraft type, professional profile, conditions of training
delivery etc.

Terms & conditions
Each train-thetrainer course is different in content, delivery and duration depending on the
profile of the trainers, the objectives and scope of the training and the target population. The
training is defined in cooperation with the client.
Typically, we adopt a blended approach with a self-study package provided to the trainers for
work prior to and after the classroom training, and including regular conference call /
videoconference tutorials. We have recently delivered a train-the-trainer course in the Middle
East comprising three 3-week remote study periods and two 35-hour classroom courses for
10,900.
On average our daily training delivery rate is 750 including course preparation and materials
