In order to complete this assignment I had to answer the question of whether women should be given the
rights of a minority. Coming into this assignment, I had little knowledge of the feminist movement and was not
able to form an opinion without doing research. This question was especially difficult for me to answer because
the question was about women in todays society, and the information that I was about the feminist movement
of the 1960s and 70s. I also had to think about the effectiveness of the feminist movement in order to say
whether or not women should be treated as a minority. I ended up stating that women should not be afforded the
legal rights of a minority based off of research that showed achievements of the feminist movement that can be
seen in todays society, among other reasons. In order to come to this conclusion, I was forced to analyze my
community and how they function, especially when it comes to the rights of women. This paper not only gave
me a greater understanding of life in the 60s and 70s, but it also made me question my relationship with the
world around me. As I found out more and more about the struggles that women faced back then, it made me
think about how much relationships have changed. Women during the 60s and 70s were struggling for things
that we now take for granted. Overall, to write an effective essay, I had to not only think about relations
between men and women during the time period that we were studying in class, but how that has changed in
todays society.
