Exercise 2: Reading
Big Ben is the bell that strikes the hours in the clock tower above the House of Parliament at
Westminster in London. It weighs 13.5 tons and was named Big Ben in honor of Sir Benjamin Hall, who
was Commissioner of Works at the time of the towers completion in 1858. Interestingly, the White chapel
Bell Foundry where it was cast is still operating from the same location today.
There are four smaller bells in the tower which strikes the quarters and are called Little Bens.
Big Ben symbolizes to many people the Mother of Parliament. When the Houses of Parliament are in
session, the clock is illuminated at night by light that goes off only when the House rises.

One day, Rahwana kidnapped Sinta and took her to his palace in Alengka. Rama was so sad. He tried any
efforts to look for his wife. He even sent his best troops to search for his beloved wife. But Sinta remained
unfound.
After four months passed, Hanoman the king of white monkeys found Sintas crown in the bushes. It was
the clue that led them to Alengka. Rama was so happy and thanked his best friend Hanoman about that and
soon they went to Alengka with thousands of troops.
The battle was unavoidable. Rahwanas troops were very powerful giants. They caused many of Ramas
soldiers got wounded. Yet, after Rama got involved in the battle, the problem was solved. It was also
because of Ramas power, Rahwana the very powerful king of giants was killed.
Rama felt so happy to see his beloved wife. They soon returned to Ayodya and lived happily forever.

Exercise 3: Subjunctive
The so-called mandative subjunctive is used in that clauses after expression (which may be verbs,
nouns,or adjectives) of ordering, recommending, intending. This subjunctive takes the base form of the
verb-witj no s form, and no changes for past tense .

Rewrite the following using subjunctive where appropriate.
The governor directed that all prisoners be closely supervised at all times. He ordered that all prison officers should
strictly observe the regulations. He insisted that they should not let any visitors smuggle in weapons or drugs. It was
vital, he said, that all visitor should be searched.
The prison officers stated that all this has always been done. But the fact is that three prisoners escaped on Saturday.
The new regulations state that it is essential that all sections of the prison should be searched more frequently and
more thoroughly. They also recommended that extra staffs are recruited so that no matter how skillful the prisoners
are, they will not be able to escape, as if it was only a simple question of staffing.
Exercise 4: Active or passive?
