ACMS SYSTEM

GENERAL
The main functions of the ACMS (Aircraft Condition Monitoring System) are
S to perform engine condition,
S APU condition,
S aircraft performance monitoring
S as well as trouble shooting assistance.
It collects, records and processes aircraft system data.
These data can be retrieved through the MCDU, for dumping on a memory
support (disk, PCMCIA card), sending via ATSU or printing.

ACMS ARCHITECTURE
The ACMS consists of:
S the DMU (Data Management Unit) as a sub-system of the FDIMU (Flight
Data Interface and Management Unit) including a SAR (Smart ACMS
Recorder),
S a PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
interface,
S an onground equipment called GSE (Ground Support Equipment),
S a DAR (Digital ACMS Recorder), optional .
DMU functions are:
S customized programming applications
user programmable reports,
DAR recording function, fully programmable (trigger conditions and
recorded data),
SAR recording function, also fully programmable (trigger conditions and
recorded data).
PCMCIA disk card functions are:
S additional storage of
internal DAR data,
QAR records,
SAR capability extension,
ACMS reports,
loading/downloading.
The GSE (Ground Support Equipment) is used for preparing the specific
programmable dataframes (trigger conditions and recorded data).
For data retrieval the PCMCIA disks must be prepared by the GSE.

DMU (DATA MANAGEMENT UNIT)-GENERAL DESCRIPTION
GENERAL
The DMU, located in the FDIMU, collects, stores and processes various aircraft
system data. This data can be stored in the internal DMU memory, the
PCMCIA card or the DAR, if installed.
The collected (raw) data is only used to generate various condition reports, for
SAR/DAR recording and the realtime parameter call-up functions
(Label Call- Up and Alpha Call-Up).
These reports can also be stored in the internal DMU memory or on the
PCMCIA card.

AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS
Various aircraft systems are connected to the DMU.
These input sources provide the DMU with
S engine parameters,
S APU parameters and
S aircraft parameters (raw data).
ACMS Part
The ACMS monitors the data supplied by various aircraft systems for trend
monitoring to get maintenance relevant data.
This data enable the operator to customize his maintenanceplanning.
Longterm trendmonitoring of the engines and the APU prevent expensive
unscheduled maintenance actions outside of the main base from the aircraft
operator.
In addition the ACMS is used for various tasks like:
S hard landingdetection,
S teamproficiency monitoring,
S troubleshooting on systemlevel.

DMU-DESCRIPTION
SAR
The SAR is a DMU function. This function allows the recording of the collected
data brought into a compressed format, programmable through the GSE.
SAR data can be stored in the internal DMU memory or on the PCMCIA card.
The purpose of the GSE is:
S to programm the disk space ratio,
S to configure the customer database and trigger conditions,
S to perform data readout (printout and analysis).

DAR (DLH OPTION)
The DMU part receives the necessary data from the aircraft systems and
monitors these continuously.
The purpose of the DAR is to store data on an optical disk for on ground
performance, maintenance or condition monitoring tasks.
Occurs a specified condition or event the FDIMU automatically starts a
preprogrammed Report (Preprogrammed selection of data can be done
through the GSE).
The FDIMU stores the result of this report on the internal nonvolatile SSMM
(solidstate mass memory).
The report with the result can also be recorded either on the internal Smart
ACMS Recorder SAR or on the PCMCIA card (if installed) or on the external
Digital ACMS Recorder DAR (if installed).
In addition the Reports can also be transmitted to the ground station through
the ATSU (ACARS) or downloaded through the MDDU or PCMCIA card.

FLIGHT DATA INTERFACE UNIT-GENERAL DESCRIPTION
GENERAL
The FDIU (Flight Data Interface Unit), which is a part of the FDIMU aquires the
same parameters as the DMU.
The FDIU send these data to the DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder). These
parameters can also be recorded on the PCMCIA card and on a QAR, if
installed.
DFDRS Function
The FDIUpart collects all critical flightparameters from various A/Csystems
and sends it to the DFDR. The FDIUparts converts the flight parameters and
sends them in serial digital format to the DFDR (ARINC717 databus). These
flightparameters are stored to the DFDR (and to the QAR, if installed).
At the same time the FDIU sends an audio signal with encoded
GMTinformation to the CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) for synchronization.
The GMT information is provided from the active CMC (Back Up Clock) if the
main clock fails.
The LA (Linear Accelerometr) generates acceleration data in analog format.
The information from the LA is sent to the FDIU part via SDAC (System Data
Acquisition Computer). The SDAC converts this information to a digital format
for the FDIUpart which sends these acceleration data to the DFDR together
with the other flightparameters.
The status of the DFDR and the status of the FDIU (failure/no failure) is
monitored by the SDACs. If a failure occures, it is shown on the ECAM display.
For maintenance and test of the DFDRS, the FDIU is connected with the CMC
(Central Maintenance Computer) of the CMS (Central Maintenance System).
The testconnector enables the connection of portable testequipment and a
dataloader to the FDIMU.
The recorder has the capability to store all data which the FDIUpart of the
FDIMU has collected over the last 25 hours.
Mandatory ParameterIntegrityCheck
The FDIF (Flight Data Interface Function) performs a mandatory check for
parameterintegrity during flight. The result is stored in a nonvolatile memory
in the FDIMU. The result is also recorded on the DFDR and on the QAR in the
respective data words.

PCMCIA INTERFACE
DESCRIPTION
The PCMCIA (Personal Computer Card International Association) interface
accepts high capacity (up to 64 Mbytes of memory) removable PCMCIA cards.
On the PCMCIA card can be stored:
S ACMS reports,
S SAR data,
S DFDR data and
S DAR data.
The card space ratio is programmable by the GSE.
The PCMCIA interface can also be used as a portable data loader to upload
FDIMU software and databases or to download recorded data.
These cards are not delivered with the FDIMU LRU.

GSE (GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT)-DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The GSE is based on a compatible personal computer able to read 3.5 inch
floppy disks and PCMCIA cards.
The GSE software provides the following main functions:
S reconfiguration function and
S readout function.
The reconfiguration function allows the configuration of the customer database
(trigger conditions, layout of recording space, ...).
The readout function allows:
S display,
S print out and
S analysis of recorded data.

DESCRIPTION
The MCDUs 2 and 3 are connected to the FDIMU to display data, program and
also control the system. Compared to the GSE, the programming facilities
offered by the MCDU are very limited.
The main functions of the MCDU within the ACMS are:
S online display of selected parameters (Label call-up and Alpha call-up),
S display of the list of the stored reports and SAR files,
S manual request of reports and SAR/DAR recording.

PRINTER-DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The printer is used to print reports generated by the DMU as well as most of
the ACMS MCDU displays. The printer can be automatically controlled by the
DMU, depending on the trigger conditions which are programmed by GSE
(Flight phases and engineering applications)
The printer can also be manually controlled from the MCDU or activated using
the ACMS PRINT pushbutton, then the report starts immediatly (independent
of other trigger logics).

ATSU (AIR TRAFFIC SERVICE UNIT)-DESRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The ATSU (Air Traffic Service Unit) can be used to send reports and to
broadcast parameters generated by the FDIMU to a ground station via radio
transmission. The download of reports can be automatically initiated by the
DMU, depending on the trigger conditions which are programmed by GSE
(Flight phases and engineering applications) or manually initiated from the
MCDU.
The ATSU can also receive, and send to the FDIMU, requests from the ground:
S uplink of request for report generation.
S uplink of reprogramming messages.

ACMS DESCRIPTION/OPERATION
FDIMU
The FDIMU integrates the former FDIU (DFDRS function) and DMU (ACMS
function) with a PCMCIA interface into a single LRU. These two functions
operate independently from each other:
S The FDIU part is dedicated to the Flight Data Recording System for
incident/ accident investigation.
S The DMU part is used to monitor aircraft systems condition, mainly engines
and APU systems, as well as aircraft performance in order to schedule
maintenance tasks, operation recommendations to be formulated, and
trouble shooting assistance.
For PCMCIA recording purposes data transmission between these two parts is
provided by an internal ARINC 429 data bus.
DMU
The DMU part is the main part of the ACMS. The main function of the DMU
part is to generate reports or/and to record raw data from aircraft system data
(by ARINC 429 low- and high speed data buses) collected and continuously
monitored by the DMU.
This data is stored into buffer memories and retrieved to provide, if required,
preevent data for report generation or/and raw data recording. In addition
specific trigger conditions are programmed in the DMU part set up database
thanks to a GSE. So that, when a preprogrammed trigger condition is detected
by the DMU monitoring, the DMU part software generates automatically
preformatted ACMS reports or/and records automatically raw data surrounding
this specific event.
The DMU stores these reports on its internal nonvolatile SSMM (solid state
mass memory). The DMU stores the sets of raw data on an external optional
DAR or/and compresses and stores this data on its memory (SAR function).
The SAR and DAR data and the reports can also be recorded on the PCMCIA
memory card, when installed. The DMU is fitted with a BITE function that
reports ACMS status to the CMS.
NOTE:

REPORTS
The DMU part generates a set of 21 preprogrammed ACMS reports, functional
at Aircraft delivery, called Airbus Standard Reports. The AI standard reports
are monitorfunctions with specified trigger mechanism, specified
datacollection and with specified outputformat.
The performance of these Reports is the basic aircraftmonitoring function,
which collects parameters for trend analysis of:
S Aircraft performance monitoring,
S Engine monitoring,
S APU monitoring.
Further applications are:
S Miscellaneous monitoring functions related to structure, RAT, ECS and door
monitoring,
S Troubleshooting and in depth investigation.
If needed, further reports called free programmable reports. The operator can
change some parameter to customize the AI standard Reports through the
MCDU or GSE.
All these Reports start automatically in case of the aircraft operates unusual or
incorrect (e.g. engine overtemperature).
A report consists of a fixed and comprehensive set of data collected under
predefined trigger logic and callup through callup codes. The ACMS reports
may also be triggered either by a manual request via the ACMS Remote Print
button, or via an ATSU uplink request.
Finally the ACMS reports can be:
S printed out on the cockpit printer in flight or in ground,
S downloaded on ground only from the ACMS memory via the MDDU or via
the PCMCIA interface card,
S Downlinked through ACARS function (ATSU) in flight or on ground.

The ACMS function is very flexible and allows, through the GSE,
to customize or create trigger conditions, reports and sets of raw
data. Further GSE can perform a partition of the SSMM (inside
the DMU) between reports, SAR data and buffers.

ACMS DESCRIPTION/OPERATION (CONT.)
SAR FUNCTION
The SAR (Smart ACMS Records) function provides compression and recording
of a predefined set of raw data related to particular flight events. This data set
is stored in the DMU part SSMM and if programmed in the PCMCIA card as
well.
The SAR recording can be triggered:
S Automatically when programmable triggers are met,
S Manually via the MCDU.
The memory of the DMU part dedicated to the SAR, is split into separate
channels (up to 8) with different sizes used to store SAR files. Each channel
can have up to 32 programmable start/stop trigger conditions running
simultaneously and fully customized. When a trigger condition is met, a new
SAR file is opened and is used to store the corresponding predefined
compressed data. In addition, each channel can be programmed to record
preevent data for extended trouble shooting.
SAR data is not directly accessible on board. SAR data files are dumped on
ground only via the MDDU or via the PCMCIA interface, either automatically or
manually. Data is then graphed or tabulated using the READOUT function of
the GSE. The only information available on board the aircraft is related to SAR
file characteristics displayed on the MCDU.
The Airbus Industrie standard default SAR programming has no channels
defined or automatic triggers programmed. The user must initiate all programs.

The DAR memory support is then read out by a specific DAR AGS (Analysis
Ground Station) and used for longterm trending and shortterm trouble
shooting.
The DAR recording speed can be set from 64 word/second up to 1024 word/
second by GSE.
The Airbus standard default DAR programming consists of a predefined 64
word/secondframe format but with no automatic triggers defined.
The DAR includes a BITE function, which reports the status to the DMU.
The PCMCIA interface, if it is installed, can be used to store the same data as
the DAR recorder.
PCMCIA BOARD AND INTERFACE (New Menu Function: PCMCIA)
The PCMCIA board provides an interface in order to:
S store ACMS reports as well as DAR and SAR data independently from the
recording done in the DMU and in the DAR.
S store DFDRS control flight parameters independently from the recording
done in the QAR (Quick Access Recorder).
S upload ACMS system software and ACMS setup database.
S download ACMS reports and raw data (SAR).
The PCMCIA board is managed by the DMU processor and is accessible
through an access door on the FDIMU front face.

DAR FUNCTION
The optional DAR records the raw data sent by the DMU part on frames like
the DFDR.
DAR recording activation can be:
S automatic by preprogrammed logical aircraft event triggers (up to 64 GSE
programmed triggers available),
S manual through the MCDU,
S continuous during the entire flight,
S continuous or intermittent during a specific flight phase.

ALPHA PARAMETER-DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
For the 300 parameters, which have an alphanumerical code, a selection is
possible by the alpha callup function. This page enables the display of alpha
callups and the definition of alpha callup sets which can be recalled at a later
date.
S The ALPHA MENU DISPLAY key displays 8 pages with up to 5 alpha
call-ups per page. The display readout is directly given in engineering units.
The alpha call-up is identified in form of alphanumeric codes, for example,
EGT 1.
S The ALPHA MENU CLEAR key is used to clear the current alpha callup
entries.
S The ALPHA LIST key provides the list of the available alpha callups. If a
letter is specified, the list will display only alpha callups starting with this
letter.
S The SETUP NAME key is used to define the name of a set, up to 8 sets of

PARAMETER LABEL-OPERATION
DESCRIPTION
The FDIMU (DMU part) permits direct access to all parameters transmitted on
the ARINC 429 data buses connected to the DMU function for on line display.
The ACMS LABEL CALLUP Control page enables the access to the display
of label callups and the definition of label callup sets.
The SETUP Function enables the display of 8 pages with up to 2 label callup
parameters per page.
The display read out of both functions is in binary form.
Label Call-Up Function
Label callup selection is made by using the Equipment Identification EQ
(which is the source computer or subsystem), system number, label and the
SDI (Source/Destination Identifier) which are separated by a slash.
As an example EGT:
The EGT value is given in real time and refreshed once per second. The line
below the ARINC parameter characteristics contains the label (345), the SDI
(01), and the decimal value (516) of the selected data bits.
In the next data lines the SSM bits and the binary data field of the selected
parameters are displayed. In the example, only 12 bits of the data field are
significant (bit 28 to bit 17).
The LABEL PORT LIST key displays a list of DMU input ports with the
connected computers and the equipment/system identifications.
Setup Funtion
The SETUP NAME key is used to define the name of a set, up to 8 sets of 16
label callups is possible. Storing or deleting remains available. The bottom of

ACMS REPROGRAMMING-OPERATION
DESCRIPTION OPERATION
A password is necessary to reprogram the system. The reprogramming is
performed at engineering level. The reprogramming of the ACMS is done,
either by the GSE software tool for a full reprogramming or by using the MCDU
for a very limited reprogramming.
The MCDU reprogramming function enables report inhibition, report constants
reprogramming and report logic and statistical counters reset.
MCDU Reprogramming Functions
S The REPORT INHIBIT key allows the inhibition of all automatic triggers for
a selected report. This inhibition will not disable the generation of the ACMS
reports via the MCDU Manual Report Request function.
S The REPORT RESET key is used to reset the trigger logic and counters
associated with specific ACMS reports.
S The PROGRAM REPORT CONSTANTS menu modifies constants within
the ACMS reports. Constants are listed individually for each report.
S The DOCUMENTARY DATA menu provides some ACMS identification from
DCP (Data Coding Panel) and essential configuration information.
S The STATISTIC COUNTERS menu allows the display and reprogramming
of engine flight hours and engine cycles counters for each engine. The
FDIMU/ DMU part will reset engine hours and cycles for a particular engine
position when the DMU recognizes a change in engine serial number. This
menu allows the line maintenance personnel to program the correct value
for engine flight hours after an engine has been changed.
To be authorized to arm triggers associated to a RAT TEST report, a correct
password has to be entered in the ACMS:
SPECIAL FUNCtion/ REPROGramming menu page.
NOTE:

The RAT test is not triggered by the FDIMU/DMU part !

PCMCIA-OPERATION
DESCRIPTION OPERATION
This function enables the PCMCIA board management and display.
It shall give information relative to
S DAR, QAR, ACMS REPORTS or SAR data
recorded on the PCMCIA board by the DMU.
This must be initially programmed from the GSE, if not, only DAR is recorded
on PCMCIA board.
The following applications are available
S The ACMS PCMCIA IDENTIFICATION displays the part number, serial
number, maintenance word status and the total and free capacity of the
PCMCIA.
S The ACMS PCMCIA DIRECTORY menu displays the structure of the
directory and includes subdirectories and files. It is possible to switch to a
subdirectory and to switch into a file. A file can be switched between
hexadecimal and ASCII representations of the content.
S The ACMS PCMCIA RECORDING shall display the different recording
partitions. It will display information such as record status, file name, and
length of a record. Additionally, the total and the free capacity of the
partition are displayed.

DAR RECORDING-OPERATION
DESCRIPTION OPERATION
The ACMS DAR RECORDING menu provides manual start and stop of the
DAR recording and real time display of DAR data, when the DAR is installed.
The DAR recording can be manually initiated via the MANUAL START function.
By pressing this key, the STOPPED or RUNNING status is displayed.
The menu page also provides information concerning the programming of the
DAR function such as, history time, recording speed and data encoding type.
The DAR recording speed can be set from 64 word/second up to 1024 word/
second by GSE.
Up to 8 pages of 5 DAR words are available.
The data is displayed in hexadecimal format after the selection of desired word
numbers.

STORED SAR DATA-DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The STORED SAR DATA menu provides a listing of all SAR recording
channels (Up to 8 channels) with their related allocated memory size.
In addition this menu allows a dumping of a specific SAR selected channel files
on a MDDU floppy disk.
After selection of the requested SAR channel, the list of stored SAR files is
calledup. This menu displays, for each file, the flight leg number with the
associated trigger code, date and time when the file was created.
This menu also provides the size of each SAR file. It is also possible to dump
individual SAR files onto a floppy disc (MDDU).

MANUAL REQUEST SAR RECORDING-OPERATION
DESCRIPTION OPERATION
This function provides selective START/STOP control for each SAR recording
channel. Each operation of these keys toggles the STOPPED/RUNNING
status of the appropriate channel.
The manual start/stop control is independent from the GSE programmed
automatic trigger conditions.
Display:
Below the menu title line the available SAR channels are listed.
Each listed SAR channel contains:
S Title (or message CHANNEL NOT ASSIGNED),
S SAR channel number
S Run/Stop status indication
Adjacent to the left line select keys the START or STOP indication shows to
initiate the related SAR recording function.
Behind the SAR channel numbers the current start/stop indications (green)
show:
S STOPPED : The channel is inactive (neither manually nor automatically
triggered)
S RUNNING : The channel is active (neither manually or automatically
triggered).

The external system monitoring detects faults related to the interface
(Sources and buses):
S between the FDIMU and the Flight Controls,
S the electrical clock,
S the CMS (Centralized Maintenance System),
S the FCU (Flight control Unit),
S the EIS (Electronic Instrument System),
S the BSCU (Brake and Steering Control Unit),
S the FADEC and
S the ISIS (Integrated Standby Instrument System).

DAR-RECORDER-DESCRIPTION
DAR Constructiontion
The installed DAR is an extended storage Digital ACMS Recorder. The data
are stored on an onboard rewritable optical disk. The quick access to the disk
and the EJECT pushbutton is through a door, which is in the front panel of
the DAR as well as a FAIL indicator light.
An Interactive Display System, located on the frontpanel, consists of one
16character alphanumeric display.
The disk medium is a standard of 3.5 and a large storage capacity of
120 Mbytes per formatted disk.
The drive and control board controls the speed and direction of the disk motion.
A BITE logic monitors the reel rotation, the disk speed and presence of data
and disk. In case of discrepancies, the status output is received by the DMU.
The disk must be formatted to store the data.
NOTE:

Change/Insertion of the Optical Disk has to be performed


according Job-Card or other corresponding instructions (AMM)

The following messages are possible:


S DISK DETECTED (Disk is initially inserted in the disk drive)
S CHANGE DISK
(Problem with an optical disk, which has just been
inserted into the drive)
S DATA FILE FULL (The raw data file or the report data is full)
S EJECTING
(Ejecting of the inserted optical disk is in progress)

(Inserted optical disk is not a valid data disk)

(The optical QAR is initializing)

(No optical disk is inserted)

(The optical disk is write protected)

(The unit temperature is in range after being out of
