RIDEWELL INTRODUCTION

Vintage Woodtype
Ridewell is a wood type inspired typeface filled with
an amazing range of OpenType features. It has a
wonderfully warm, friendly and authentic letterpress
vintage look and is delivered in two styles, a regular and
a printed/weathered style.
Both styles feature a full uppercase and lowercase
set but also a variety of OpenType goodies that make
Ridewell unique and expand each style into a huge
superset. With over 1800 glyphs per style you can take
full creative control of stylistic alternates, contextual
alternates, discretionary ligatures, standard ligatures,
numerators and denominators. The combinations are
just endless.
Ridewell is delivered in OpenType TTF format and
supports Wester, Central and Eastern European
languages.

Ridewell supports a variety of

OpenType features giving you
a range of alternative letter
combinations.

RIDEWELL GUIDE

Using opentype
To use all of Ridewells features you will need a program
that supports OpenType such as Adobe Illustrator,
Adobe InDesign, CorelDraw and Quark XPress. The
following example is for Adobe Illustrator.

LETS START
In this example we have
set our text in uppercase.
The first step is to open
the Opentype / Character
Panels from window>type
or command + t.
For starters make sure
you have all settings
deactivated and the
Position set to Default
Position.

STYLISTIC
ALTERNATES
(SALT)
With the text selected,
activating Stylistic
Alternates (Titling
Alternates in InDesgin)
will enable alternative
glyphs, such as R & L in the
example.

DISCRETIONARY
LIGATURES (DLIG)
By activating
Discretionary Ligatures
you access the second set
of alternates.
(Remember to keep the text
selected and to deactivate the
Stylistic Alternates.)

RIDEWELL GUIDE
CONTEXTUAL
ALTERNATES
(CALT)
By activating Contextual
Alternates you access the
third set of alternates,
like the WE you see in the
example.
(Remember to deactivate the
Discretionary Ligatures.)

DLIG & SALT

By activating both
Discretionary Ligatures
and Stylistic Alternates
you access the second
set of alternates plus the
alternates of the second
set (fourth set). The
combination of glyphs
that exist in this case are
RI and LL.

TAKE CONTROL
Lets start again and take
this to the next level.
Select the word and be
sure to deactivate all of
the OpenType features.

Using your Type Tool

select R and I and activate
Discretionary Ligatures
and Stylistic Alternates.

RIDEWELL GUIDE
Now select W and E
and activate Contextual
Alternate.

Move on and select

D and E and activate
Discretionary Ligatures.

Finally select LL and

activate the Discretionary
Ligatures and Stylistic
Alternates.
You can try different
letter combinations and
features to see what
happens, or just browse
through the full character
set and select the
glyphs you want to use.
(type>glyphs)

RIDEWELL GUIDE
NUMERATORS
Select all the text and
click on the flyout menu
Position and select
Numerator. Adjusting
these options will change
the position of the glyphs
relatively to the baseline.

DENOMINATORS
Again, select all your text
and click on the flyout
menu Position and choose
Denominators. Adjusting
these options will change
the position of the glyphs
relatively to the baseline.

LOWERCASE
Set a word in lowercase.
Open your Character Panel
(window>type>character).

SMALL CAPS
From the flyout menu on
the top right of the panel
activate Small Caps.

RIDEWELL GUIDE
STANDAR
LIGATURES
When setting type in
lowercase and you wish
to activate the Standard
Ligatures from the
Opentype Panel ffi in
this example choose only
these characters.

Avoid activating the

Standard Ligatures, when
setting type in Uppercase,
you may get some
unwanted results.

STANDAR
LIGATURES MAGIC
There are three ways to
access the preset words
(and, since, from, to, etc.)
Start by typing a word in
lowerace.

If you activate the

Standard Ligatures you get
the lowercase result of
the preset word.

RIDEWELL GUIDE
Now if you activate Small
Caps from the Character
Panel youll access the
first Uppercase word
variation.

To access the second

uppercase preset word
variation, set your type in
uppercase.

Now activate the standard

ligatures from the
OpenType Panel. This
will access the second
uppercase preset word.

RIDEWELL GUIDE
HEIGHTS
So far weve covered the
uppercase, lowercase and
small caps. Here you can
see the Uppercase and
Small Caps R.

There are two more

Uppercase alternatives
(different character
heights) which can be
accessed via: window> type>
glyphs in Illustrator or in
InDesign: character panel>
opentype> stylistic sets> set1
& set2. Select SS01 from the
Show dropdown. Double
click on any glyph to
insert it in your text.
You can also select SS02
from the Show dropdown.
Double click on any glyph
to insert it in your text.

This is how all the

Uppercase variations
relate to each other. From
left to right: Uppercase,
Small Caps, SS01, SS02,
Numerator, Denominator.

RIDEWELL GUIDE
