How to write your own review.
To introduce students to a variety of award
winning books. They then will learn how to
create their own review in a group after
choosing one to read with a group.

Activity Overview:

Day 1 Quick informal assessment on


students knowledge of book awards.
PowerPoint on the awards- how often,
criteria, history, classic winners they
will know and the past few winners.
(Students take notes)
View book trailers on YouTube of each
title and students place vote for 1st
and 2nd choice.
Librarian and teacher then form
groups
Day 2- Book club job review
word wizard (takes notes on funny,
weird, hate/love, unfamiliar words
page # and reason for recording
Character captian-notes on
character traits and changes
Connector-making connections
throughout the story
Questioner- ask clarifying or
interesting questions throughout the
book

Expectations, timeline of project,


rubric for final presentation.
Students started reading the first few
chapters that day
Day 3- Discuss project rubric for the end and
allow time to read
The remaining of the reading was
completed in class or home. I did send
links and units for each book the
teacher could use for writing or
discussion in class.
When the students completed the
books we set up 2 days for groups to
write their book reviews in the library
with assistance of us both.
2 more were scheduled for using iPads
to practice and record.
One additional class period was
scheduled so the class could view their
book reviews along with the other 4th
grade class.
