Doha, Qatar HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd. is part of the HSBC Group and is responsible for providing banking services on behalf of the Group to both corporate and personal customers in the Middle East and North Africa region. Amongst the foreign banks, HSBC has the largest presence in Qatar, and continues to strengthen its product expertise on the ground. I was employed as part of this the bank s vision to cater to the needs of large corporates and focus on providing value-added services to them. Head of Project & Export Finance, Qatar HSBC set up a Project & Export Finance Unit in Qatar in 2008, and entrusted me with the task of developing the platform. My responsibilities included developing relationships with all the major clients in Qatar, origination of transactions, structuring, execution, negotiations and legal documentation of the mandates. The emphasis has largely been on advisory led transactions, although some arranging transactions have also been undertaken. I have been leading the teams that are supplemented by sectoral and product specialists from Dubai and/or London offices, as required. The notable transactions during the last two years that I have been associated with include Ras Girtas Power Company, Nakilat Tranche III, Ras Gas Bond, and Marafeq Qatar (on-going). I have also been involved in originating transactions in Pakistan, and have worked on M&A transactions related to power, and oil & gas sectors. Associate Director, Global Investment Banking, Qatar I joined HSBC in 2006 in the Global Investment Banking Department, at a time when the bank in Qatar started focusing on providing value-added services to the corporate clientele and consequently increase its share of non-balance sheet related revenue. I was part of the original team which was based on the ground to undertake this task. During my two years in Global Investment Banking, I was involved with a number of notable transactions which included both the government and the private sectors. The bank s Corporate Banking Group is considered a priority area and includes the Structured Finance & Syndications Department ( SFS ), which was involved with multi-bank transactions both within the Kingdom and abroad. Senior Relationship Manager and Agency Head My role in BSF has been that of a senior transactor since I joined the bank, reporting directly to the department manager. Over the years, I was involved with a large number of transactions that included advisory, structuring, underwriting, execution, syndication, and documentation of transactions. These transactions spanned over a variety of sectors that provided me with a well rounded experience of the Middle East and comprised of oil & gas, petrochemicals, power, real estate, transportation, contractor financing, telecoms, and financial institutions. The clientele was not restricted to Saudi Arabia but extended from Europe to Asia. Within Saudi Arabia, there was an increasing trend towards raising Shariah compliant financing, which provided me with an in-depth knowledge of Shariah principles. In addition, I also headed the loan agency operations unit since August 2002. At that time BSF was associated with more than 70 transactions, highest for any Saudi bank. It acted as the facility agent for approximately a dozen transactions, which included power, petrochemicals, telecoms, and real estate sectors, including transactions relating to contractor financing. Karachi, Pakistan I started my career in 1990 in Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited, which is in the business of manufacturing urea fertilizer and marketing of its own production, as well as imported fertilizer, in Pakistan. The company was later taken over by the employees under a management buyout, and was renamed Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited. During my tenor at the company, I worked in Planning & Distribution Department, Sales Department and IT Department. In my first 2.5 years, I was responsible for distribution of imported fertilizer throughout the country. I was predominant in increasing Engro s domestic market share of imported fertilizer from 12% to 15%. After expansion of the plant s production capacity, the reliance on imported fertilizer reduced and I took on the challenge for the next 1.5 years to develop new sales territory for marketing additional product and increasing the domestic market share to 18%. In my last assignment of a little over 1.5 years, I was responsible for developing a new MIS system and building a platform to develop a state-of-the-art automated system to join the various Marketing functions and provide a link to the Finance Division.
