THE USE OF PUPPET IN TEACHING VOCABULARY

AT GRADE IV STUDENTS OF SDN KUKU

ABSTRACT
This research applied quantitative approach with pre-experimental
research design in the form one group pretest-posttest. The number of
sample was selected totally 20 from grade IV students of SDN Kuku. The
instruments of data collection in this research were pre-test and post-test
to take data. All the data were examined and analyzed with correlation
analysis Pearson product moment and then continued with the hypothesis
testing to see the significant influence of using puppet in teaching English
by using computer software SPSS 20.0 version. From the result of
hypothesis testing, It was concluded that in teaching English for young
learner particularly at elementary school need an enjoy situation with the
interesting media supporting.

ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode
pre-experimental dalam bentuk satu kelompok pre-test dan post-test.
Semua data dikelolah dan dianalisis menggunakan pearson product
moment untuk melihat nilai hubungan dan dilanjutkan dengan uji
hypothesis untuk melihat taraf signifikansi penggunaan puppet dalam
pembelajaran bahasa inggris dengan menggunakan bantuan SPSS versi
20.0. Dari hasil uji hypothesis, disimpulkan bahwa dalam pembelajaran
bahasa inggris khususnya pada anak SD dibutuhkan situasi yang
menyenangkan dengan dukungan media yang menarik bagi siswa seperti
puppet.

In order to teach English vocabulary for young learner, the teachers


have to creative and innovative in order to create fun and wonderful
situation during the instructional process. However, frequently the
presentation

process

of

vocabulary

teaching

less

attractive

and

unmotivated the students. The teachers always apply Teacher - Center


Learner strategy, in which the students do not actively participate during
the process. Whereas, teachers should encourage their students be more
creative and directly involved in interaction among of them and their
teacher.
There are several media that have been expanded by the English
teacher nowadays. However, those kinds of media are categorized into
three commonly group. They are audio, visual, and audio visual media.
Puppet is one of visual media that assumed by some expert as the right
media to vocabulary learning of elementary school students. According to
Gwin (1972:60) the puppet is a wonderful toy that can be controlled by the
operator and can teach children to be more creative and critical while the
class was running. Therefore the researcher used puppet as the
instructional media in this research. The researcher believe that the use of
puppet will able to reduce, even more to solve the problems faced by the
students of SDN kuku in learning English. Using the puppet as an
alternative media of instructional for young learners, could be considered
as the best way since it pleases the students a lot. Furthermore, Puppet
can make student memorize vocabulary easily. Puppet help student also
to mastery vocabulary very well. Beside of that, puppet develops the
teachers imagination in gathering and presenting vocabulary as an
interesting lesson.
Methods

This research used experimental research method with quantitative


approach. According Sugiono (2012:107), experimental research methods
can be interpreted as the research methods used to find the effect of a
particular treatment against which other studies in uncontrolled conditions.
The research design that used by the researcher was pre experimental
design in the form one group pretest-posttest. It is the expand on oneshoot case study where in this research design involving pre test before
the treatment and post test after the treatment. The results of the
analysis of the data manually by using Microsoft office excel 2007
compared with SPSS version 20 for windows as a control analysis.
Findings and Discussion
After conducting the normality test distribution, the researcher then
analyzed the result of pre and post test by using t test formula to figure
out the influence value of using puppet in teaching English particularly in
teaching part of the body at SDN Kuku students. The kind of t test used
by the researcher is one sample t test. Therefore the result presented as
follow:

The table above showed that the value or correlation between
extraversion personality and speaking fluency was 0.440. It compares with
the interpretation degree of correlation in Sugiyanto (1996); the researcher

concluded that there is a strong enough correlation between

Base on the descriptive statistic and the correlation value,

hypothesis testing from the result of pre and post test were able to
calculate by using the paired t test formula above in order to get the
value of t counted. From the t test calculation, it has been found that the
value of t counted is 16.9. Then the value of t counted compare with
the value of t table in which df = n1 + n2 2 = 20 20 = 38 based on
significant level 95% ( = 0.05) paired sample t test and found that the
value of t table was 2.024.

Based on the criteria of testing hypothesis, it has been got that t


counted > t table (16.9 > 2.024). By seeing the result of this hypothesis
testing the researcher concluded that there was any influence of using
puppet in teaching English at grade four of SDN Kuku.

Conclusion
The researcher concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was
accepted while Null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It means that there was
a significant influence of using Puppet in teaching English at grade four at
SDN Kuku. this result was taken after conducting hypothesis testing by
using paired sample t test (df=n1+n2 2 = 20 + 20 2 38) with the
significant level 95%, two sides testing got t counted > t table
(16.9>2.204). it was also concluded that in teaching English for young
learner particularly at elementary school need an enjoy situation with the
interesting media supporting. An elementary school English teacher
should create an innovative media such us puppet as used in this
research to encourage the students motivated in learning English.
