North Walsham Farmers Market

On Sunday 31st May I took Beryl along

to visit North Walsham Farmers market.
It was a great start with only 1 for two
hours parking, then a short walk to the
20 brave stall holders, there should be
40 but the weather was not inviting.

We began at the preserves stall from

Ollands Farm Foods who also stocked
pickled quails eggs, which were really
delicious as part of our Sunday tea,
they are produced just along the
coast at Happisburgh.

Realstones of Sheringhams display

(Below) was very tempting, I spent
a while looking at their Facebook
page when I got home and found
some lovely gift ideas on it.

I am a relatively competent silver

surfer and I recently purchased a
new electric cleaner online.
It arrived within a couple of days
and I patted myself on the back
(my mother always tells me self
praise is no recommendation!)
I carefully unpacked it and looked
at the diagrams,I half constructed
my cleaner and then the gremlins
began to laugh as I chiggled the
bits around, I took those I could
connect apart and put them back
together but could get no further.
The next day I drove into Cromer
to Postles shop in Church Street
and apologising for my cheek,
explained my position.
The sympathetic young man told
me to bring the cleaner in, so this
I did the next day and then with
his colleague he completed the
cleaners construction.
I will definitly be buying locally
in future for although I can surf
the net and buy items, there is
no substitute for friendly,
personal service.

This week we received a letter with

5 cartoons from Noone who wrote:
These drawings refl ect some well
known Norfolk idioms. I hope you
find a spot for Fred & Charlie
as a little light humour.
Thank you very much Noone, the
first of your cartoons is on page 8.

Enjoy Your Crab Tales

Dear Crab Tales,
In reply to a letter in the last issue, from
someone pretending to be Janet Munro.
Regarding the bus with the blacked out
windows.
An unknown spokesperson said: This new
initiative stops potential paying customers
being scared off by the un-ironed faces of
the bus pass joyriders peering out at them.

Dear Editor,
We would like to thank everyone who donated
money during our recent collection days at
Tesco Aylsham & Morrisons Cromer, and
to those who came along and supported our
stalls during the Open Boat House event
and Crab and Lobster Festival.
We thought that your readers would like to know
that each event raised the following: The Tesco
collection was 337.30, at Morrisons 474.64,
from the Open Boat House stall - 247.30 and
the Crab and Lobster Festival tombola stall
raised 568.62.
As always, we are most grateful to our members
and to the general public for their constant
support in helping us to raise thousands of
pounds for the RNLI.
If any of your Crab Tales readers are interested
in joining Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild, they

Dear Editor,
A local family correctly guessed how many oil
filters the East Coast motor company had packed
into a crab pot at the Crab and Lobster festival.
The correct amount was 109, and Mrs Bushell,
pictured below had the closest answer.

London Map
This map of London shows where
tourists and locals are using their
mobile phones in zones 1 & 2.
The red bits indicate photos taken by
tourists, while the blue bits indicate
photos taken by locals & the yellow
bits might be either.
Tourists & locals experience cities
in strikingly different ways. For
example, in London most tourists
will visit Buckingham Palace, the
Houses of Parliament, St. Pauls
Cathedral, Oxford Street, etc. but
will probably not end up visiting East Croydon,
Hendon, Dagenham or any of the other parts of
London outside of Zone 1.
Conversely, Londoners can go years without ever
visiting the tourist traps of central London. To
see just how different these 2 worlds are, have
a look at the map of London above based on
where people take photographs.
So, for London you can clearly see this divide
and the map above only really shows zones
1 and 2. Go further out and you find even
fewer places visited by tourists.
The map was created by Eric Fischer who has
also created similar maps for most of the worlds
major cities. All of them are part of a project

is based on a larger project called
The Geotaggers World Atlas.
The data from 2010-13, may be slightly out
of date, yet for most cities popular tourist
destinations change little from year to year.
Eric used MapBox and Twitter data from
Gnip to create the maps.
Locals are those who tweeted from the same
location for at least a month, while tourists
where those who were considered local
in another city but were tweeting in a
different location.
In total 136 maps and 19 of the most interesting
maps of cities were shared on Facebook.
Do You Smoke?: On the job no. On my
breaks - yes!
What Would You Like To Be Doing
In Five Years?:
Living in the Bahamas with a fabulously wealthy
Swedish supermodel with big tits & who thinks
Im the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Actually, Id like to be doing that now.

This years exhibition, said by many to be one

of the best in recent years, displayed enormous
creativity and technical skill in all aspects of
the work on display.
The exhibition was opened on the previous
Thursday evening by the internationally
known cartoonist, Barry Kitson, best
known for his comic book characters
such as Batman & Spiderman.
Mr Kitson delighted many of the guests by
staying on after he had opened the exhibition
and drawing several examples of some of
these characters.
Over the six days, sales of pictures and crafts
raised a profit of 600 for Carnival funds.
Thanks to Tony Shipp for this article.

costly and we do not receive public funds to

was for 20 years
the producer and
presenter of Anglia
Televisions local
history programme
Bygones and
although the
programme
ventured further
afield including
the USA, its
roots and Eddies
passion remained
East Anglia.

On Saturday 30th May the new Geology and

Wildlife Point in Harbord Road, Overstrand
was officially opened by Eddie Anderson.

This is the 2nd Overstrand redundant telephone
box to be brought back to life by the Parish
Council having very successfully opened the
Overstrand Information Point in July 2013.
Creative Tourism Ideas & Solutions of Cromer
developed the new Geology and Wildlife Point,
and with the expert help of Martin Warren the
Geologist and owner of Poppyland Brewery
produced the two interior panels detailing the
geology of Overstrand and surrounding area.
The 3rd interior wall is a pictorial panel showing
the rich variety of wildlife that can be seen in
and around the Village.
A set of external panels are devoted to the Chalk
Reef which stretches from Cley to Trimingham
and provides a home for species not found
anywhere else in the world.

Photos Above by Bruce Stratton of Eddie Anderson with

one of the first visitors & On Left: the interior panels.
Rob Spray provided the text and photographs
for these panels with the support of Dawn
Watson and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
Officially opening the Geology and Wildlife
Point Eddie Anderson said:
I am delighted to have been asked to open the
Geo Point it brings together two of my great
passions Wildlife & Environment and a love
of design and architecture.
The shape of the roof of this telephone box is
based upon the English Architect Sir John
Soanes Neo-Classical designs, an architect
best known for his work on the Bank of
England, the Dulwich Picture Gallery
and many other public buildings.

Eddie commented
I can recall
making at least
one programme
about telephone
boxes and I still
have a fascination
for them in terms
of their design.

The fact that although they are perhaps now

a thing of the past they can be so easily
resurrected and brought back into the
community in so many clever ways.
Overstrand Parish Council funded the project
from the sale of the 2 Overstrand DVDs that
are still on sale at Overstrand Stores & other
local outlets.
It is hoped that the Geo Point as it is already
called, will encourage locals & visitors to
find out more about the diversity of the area
and begin to learn to take more care of the
environment and its wildlife.
Thanks to Bruce Stratton for sending us
this article and the photographs.

For our very own resident Godfather of Soul

his appearance in Holt will be a homecoming
of sorts. Geno Washington first came to the
UK with the US Air Force in the 60s when
he was stationed right here in Norfolk.
Upon leaving the military he settled in England,
becoming one of the biggest draws on the live
circuit and hogging the album charts.
Pink Floyd, Georgie Fame, The Small Faces,
and Jimi Hendrix were his support acts.
Londons premier cabaret company Cirque du
Cabaret prides itself on no two shows ever
being the same and have created a bespoke
show just for Holt.
With a stable of performers hailing from Moscow
to Hull, this unique event promises to put
variety back on the map and a smile on
your face - a show for the over 18s!

Other big names include chart topper and pop

pioneer Steve Harley with his band Cockney
Rebel, influential and constantly evolving folk
rock legends Steeleye Span and the rejuvenated
original punk poet, comedian, movie, radio &
rock star John Cooper Clarke and his special
guest Martin Newell.
Blake are the classical crossover boy band who
have delighted TV audiences and topped charts
the world over with sales of over a million albums.
Top stand-up comic Jenny clair will be in
conversation for the very first time in public
with Margaret Hodge, MP, MBE. These two
formidable forces will interview each other
about people, politics, power, petticoats,
performance and passion.

There is also a significant visual arts programme

including the Holt Festival Art Prize that
attracts entries from all over the UK.
The winner receives a 1,500 cheque and
the opportunity to show their work at the
Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
There are also exhibitions featuring original
items by the likes of David Hockney, Peter
Blake, Andy Warhol, Gilbert & George
and the evocative Bloomsbury group.

Book Choice

Driving Force by Dick Francis

ISBN: 0-718-13482-6

I have enjoyed most of

Dick Francis tales and
this is no exception, this
is my 3rd time of reading,
obviously a little dated
but an exciting tale.
Ex-jockey Freddie Croft,
the likable narrator, owns
and runs a fleet of 14 vans
zigzagging round England
-- a tricky setup full of
scheduling headaches.
So the last thing Freddie needs is a couple of
suspicious deaths around the place. First, theres
the shady, middle-aged gent who hitches a ride
on one of Freddies vans and inconveniently
drops dead (of natural causes, it seems).
Then theres Jogger, Freddies mechanic, who
finds odd, empty containers attached to the
undersides of several vans -- and is soon
thereafter discovered with a broken neck
at the bottom of the inspection pit.
And Freddie himself (in one of Franciss grand
ordeal-set-pieces) is abducted & nearly drowned!
Whats going on?
To find out, if you have a couple of hours to
relax, pick up this great story and enjoy.

Copacabana On The
Cromer Pier
The song Copacabana, written
by Barry Manolw, was inspired
by a conversation Manilow and
Sussman had in the club.
It is the story of Lola, played by
Annabelle Abendroth, dreaming
of stardom and after some thankless auditions she strides into the
Club where she meets Tony Forte
(Paul Allum) who falls in love
with her and then helps her to
become a Copa girl.
A rival nightclub owner, Rico,
(Matt Scantlebury) accompanied
by Concita (Clair Reynolds) the
Tropicana star in Havana, wants
Lola for himself and whisks her
away to Havana.
The story unfolds Tony, Sam and
Gladys travel to rescue the lady,
with a surprising twist.

The many powerful voices needed no

pushing to attain the top notes and
the creativity of the choreography
and attractive glamorous costumes
were a delight, as was the orchestra.
The Club was populated by a colourful array of dancing and singing
characters, maintaining a high
standard throughout.
Yet, however sumptuous the visuals
you know there has been a whole
lotta work behind the scenes.
The Cromer & Sheringham Operatic
& Dramatic Society chosen charity
this year is the Motor Neurone
Disease Association
The show was packed with great
tunes, a joyful musical event.
You sure hit the right notes for your
first night audience.

writing this for the Crab Tales.

Diet
A varied & well balanced diet is required to keep
us all healthy. A Mediterranean diet helps
fight against heart disease, certain cancers,
diabetes and memory problems.
A Mediterranean diet consists of fruit, vegetables,
seafood, olive oil & grains. Home-grown foods
rather than processed foods are helpful. If you
cannot grow your own, then be aware of where
your food has come from, avoiding additives
and preservatives.
Mediterranean diet is not only about food but how
the Mediterranean lifestyle enables people to stay
healthy; this includes sitting down together as
a family to enjoy meal times and eating in a
relaxed and leisurely way with other people.

Around Mundesley we are lucky to have an

outside gym for adults, playgrounds and the
skate park for children and many local walks.
The outdoor gym shows Healthy Living Walks
all routes starting from the gym, following the
coloured arrows. These routes are for one mile,
2 miles and 3 miles walks.
If you feel you need more advice then Health
Trainers provide free confidential support with
the GP practice on all lifestyle issues including
diet and exercise. Please contact your local

Exercise
There is overwhelming evidence that exercise
allows us to live longer and healthier loves.
Whatever your age, regular exercise helps
us all lead healthier and happier lives.
Regular activity lowers the risk of many chronic
disease including heart disease, diabetes, stroke
and even cancers. It also boosts wellbeing, sleep
quality & energy and reduces stress, depression
and dementia. Simple lifestyle changes will help
reduce time sitting down and being inactive,
(e.g. in front of the TV) instead walk around,
change position and even standing up rather
than sitting is helpful.

STROKE
Stroke has a new indicator. They say that if you
pass this on to ten people, you stand a chance
of saving one life.
Blood Clots/Stroke - Now have a fourth
indicator, the Tongue
STROKE:
Remember the 1st 3 Letters...S. T. R.
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke
victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the
effects of a stroke...totally.
He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized,
diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically
cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
Recognizing A Stroke :
S.T.R. Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to
identify and unfortunately, lack of awareness
spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer
severe brain damage when people nearby fail
to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a
stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A
SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. Chicken Soup)

DENTAL SURGERY

With the onset of Spring & milder weather, now

is a good time to make some simple lifestyle
changes which will have a big impact on your
health. If you have health concerns already
(diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, high
blood pressure, stroke) then lifestyle changes
are even more important & the ability to keep
as healthy as possible is to a large extent
under our own control.
The same rules apply to prevent us all from
developing significant medical conditions.
The main lifestyle categories are:
1. Healthy diet.
2. Increasing exercise.
3. Stopping smoking.
4. Reducing alcohol.
I am going to concentrate on diet and exercise,
as previous articles have already covered
smoking cessation and alcohol.

This article aims to supply information of a

general nature and cannot substitute for the
advice of a medical professional.
The article is not intended to diagnose health
problems or to take the place of professional
medical care.
If you have any concerns, consult your own
doctor. Every effort is made to ensure that
the information provided is accurate and
correct at the date of publication.
No liability is accepted for any omission
or inaccuracy.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of
these tasks, call an emergency number
immediately & describe the symptoms
to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------Stick out Your Tongue!
NOTE: Another sign of a stroke is this: Ask
the person to stick out his tongue.
If the tongue is crooked (if it goes to one
side or the other) that is also an indication
of a stroke.
Please pass this on and help to save a life.

Trustees Wanted
Have you ever thought about becoming a trustee
to give something back to the community and
area you live?
It doesnt have to be as time consuming as you
might think but if you can spare at least half a
day a month you could make a real difference
to a substantial amount of local people.
If you are interested, Age Concern N. Norfolk
would love to hear from you. Being a trustee
can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Trustees can come from all walks of life and if
you have just moved to the area or are recently
retired, this might be an opportunity for you to
meet new people, learn new skills or use your
invaluable existing skills for a good cause.

Our mission is: To promote the well-being

of all older people and help make later life
a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.
If this is something that is important to you or if
your life has been touched by our work, please
consider becoming a trustee. You would be part
of a team, with the opportunity to add your unique
skills & experience while learning from others
in an open, productive environment; either way
this could be the ideal position for you.
Age Concern N. Norfolk provides a 4-day per
week day centre and lunch club, a befriending
service, a pop-in coffee morning. The centre
also offers personal care, laundry services,

Sheringham Little Theatre

Sheringham Players
Flying Feathers

A farce by Derek Benfield.

A local solicitor who arrives on horseback at a
house of ill - repute full of scantily clad women,
is hidden in a cupboard with a bottle of whisky,
may seem like a fantasy, but to real life solicitor
Greg Pope from Cromer, who has directed and
acted in a variety of roles in his 11yrs with the
Players, its just another character he brings to
life in their summer production.
The play is set in the country house of Bernard
the late lamented brother of Chief Constable
Henry Potterton and his sister, Sarah.
On arriving at the house they find scantily clad
ladies wandering about, not knowing that during
Bernards temporary absence on a religious
commune, his housekeeper, Nora Winthrop,
has turned the place into a house of sin.
Nora is not expecting a visit from Henry and is
fearful of his questions and tries to hide the truth.
When Bernard also turns up from the commune
(or heaven?), and it is seen that he & Henry are
identical twins, the household is thrown into
further confusion and chaos.
The play directed by Tim Travers, promises to
be great entertainment filled with a wonderful
blend of comedy, drama, misunderstandings,
mix - ups, mayhem and surprises.
Tickets are available from the Sheringham
Little Theatre box office.

And, I would add, Wethacote are still

going strong.
Having originally started their business in

have been based ever since.
Since starting up Wethacote, other than
changing your location, what have been
the changes so far? I asked.
With now over thirty eight years
under our belt, we have a great
many very happy customers.
Most of them, if they have not done so
already, would happily write a letter of
recognition for the work we have done
that does smarten up their house.
It is all about getting it just right and
giving our customers up-front quotes
