Module Introduction: Unwrapping a standard is a systematic process for examining standards and
identifying what students need to know and do. To meet the rigorous demands of AYP (adequate
yearly progress) performance targets for students, as a whole and within subgroups, educators
need a simple yet powerful practice to accomplish a more effective implementation of the
standards along with improvement of student performance on all assessments.
Unwrapping, or unpacking, the academic content of a standard is a proven technique to assist you
(educators) in exactly what you need to teach your students. Analyzing the standard to identify
concepts and skills result in more effective instructional planning and student learning.
Activity: Using a backwards design planning model and Stage 1 within Understanding by Design
(UBD) framework you will select a standard of choice to unwrap for an upcoming unit. We will
integrate William Horton's absorb, do, connect learning activities to achieve the objectives:
