2. EXTRA-EU TRADE KEY FINDINGS

The European Union is a net exporter of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice
masts (of iron or steel). In physical terms, exports consistently exceeded imports from
2007 to 2013. The difference in trade balance was more notable in value terms due to
high export prices.
From 2007 to 2013, the EU market of iron or steel bridges, bridge sections, towers and
lattice masts showed mixed dynamics. A gradual decrease in 2008-2010 was followed by
a slight increase in 2011-2013. In physical terms it reached 2,014 thousand tonnes, in
value terms 3,996 million EUR.
EU trade of steel bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts was defined by
positive dynamics, especially imports. Beside intra-EU trade, the industry was beginning
to focus on foreign markets, due to an increasing export share in production volumes
(12-14%) and a substantial rise of the import share in consumption volumes.
China and the Republic of Korea were the main suppliers of bridges, bridge sections,
towers and lattice masts into the EU, with a combined share of 64% of total imports in
2013. However, the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2013 were Kuwait (+144.6%
per year) and Indonesia (+117.1% per year). China significantly strengthened its
position in the European import structure, from 20% in 2007 to 53% in 2013.
In 2013, Algeria (10.6%), Sri Lanka (7.4%) and Mexico (7.0%) were the leading
destinations of EU exports, together making up 25% of total exports in value terms. All
major countries of destination showed positive dynamics throughout the analyzed period.
Denmark dominated in the EU trade of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts,
while Germany was the leading producer. In 2013, Germany exported 20% of its total
bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts output. Of this amount, 14.7% was
supplied to Sweden, where Germanys production held a 15.1% share of total Swedens
consumption.
