FINE-TUNE YOUR
NETWORKING SKILLS
Trade shows and conferences are an important place
to network, especially in the oil and gas industry
By Cory Dellenbach

f you are attending an upcoming trade

show, conference, meeting or anything
similar, its always a good idea to brush
up on your networking skills. You never
know where they might lead you.
Ive used trade shows Ive attended
our own Water & Wastewater Equipment,
Treatment & Transport (WWETT) Show as
well as the Global Petroleum Show as a
way to connect with industry professionals
such as yourselves to develop profile leads
and story ideas.

Cory Dellenbach

This industry is a people business, and you

have to have a strong network.
Matt Gelotti
Youll find proof of that in our July
issue of Gas, Oil & Mining Contractor, where
we will profile Southern Spur Enterprises
out of Lashburn, Saskatchewan. I met
Southern Spurs field supervisor, Jim
Donald, while at the WWETT Show this
past February.

Beyond
buckets
and blades.

From the GPS show last year, weve

developed Safety First stories, like the one
in May on equipment that guides workers
down safely if they fall from heights.
Trade shows are a great opportunity for
the industry to show off its latest products,
but theyre also a good way to connect with
people who share the same trade.
Networking is extremely important,
whether youre a seasoned veteran or
a young professional just entering the
industry. It can build connections that
will help improve your business or career,
and it can positively impact the industrys
next generation.
This industry is a people business,
and you have to have a strong network,
says Matt Gelotti, senior vice president
for Aon Client Development Group in
Houston. Its good to network with your
competition and forge relationships with
them as well. Its beneficial to learn what
other companies are doing to remain
successful when dealing with similar
industry issues.
Here are some simple tips to help you
network better:
Do your homework:
Know who is going to be
there and who you want to
meet. Study up and prepare
your questions in advance.
Ask open-ended questions: Avoid questions that

can be answered with a simple yes

or no. This will open up the discussion and shows listeners that
you are interested in them.
Know what you do: Be able to
clearly articulate what you do, why
and for whom so you can easily
describe it to others. This will help
you get referrals.
Follow through: After you meet
someone, follow through with
them. Send them an email or give
them a call when you get back to
the office and say thank you or
reintroduce yourself. This will help
them remember who you are.
Now that you have some tips, put them
to use every time you have an opportunity,
whether its at the Global Petroleum Show or
the gas station.
CHECK OUT THE PRODUCTS
Speaking of the Global Petroleum
Show, the annual event is set for June 9-11
in Calgary, Alberta, and we have plenty of
opportunities for you to preview the show
in this issue.
If you enjoy checking out the products
in GOMC each month, we have a bonus for
you this month. In addition to this months
regular product focus on mobile and bulk
storage solutions, we also have a special
product focus highlighting equipment that
will be shown in Calgary.
We also preview the show in our Canadian Extra feature this month and tell you
about some new additions to the event this
year some of them are pretty impressive.
AT THE SHOW
Ill be attending the Global Petroleum
Show, so if youd like to meet up and
talk about your company or the industry
in general, feel free to email me at
editor@gomcmag.com.
Enjoy this months issue! GOMC

DECONTAMINATE
Mobile equipment helps Midwest Soil Remediation treat
contaminated soil at industrial sites throughout the U.S.

o the unfamiliar eye, the phrase soil cleanup might at

first glance seem an oxymoron. After all, soil is supposed to
be dirty.
And yet, soil cleanup and remediation is a $7 billion
industry that grows by approximately 6 percent each year.
These companies do the dirty work of cleaning up the toxic
substances left behind by generations of industrial activity.
One of those soil-cleanup firms is Midwest Soil Remediation Services of
Ingleside, Illinois. Since its founding in 1991, Midwest Soil has successfully
remedied 1 million tons of soil at more than 125 toxic waste sites. The company uses a process known as ex situ thermal treatment ex situ meaning
the soil is excavated for treatment.
Depending on the concentration of toxins in the soil, we can treat anywhere from 8 tons of soil per hour up to 25 tons per hour, says Mike Fetherling, the companys vice president of operations. Ours is a relatively new
technology and we operate in a relatively small, tight-knit industry that a lot
of people dont even know about.

Depending on the concentration of toxins in the soil,

up to 25 tons per hour.
Mike Fetherling
Soil remediation first came into its own with the Superfund bill of 1980,
which covered hundreds of toxic waste sites throughout the U.S. The two
most well-publicized disasters were Love Canal in New York and Times Beach
in Missouri. With the stroke of a pen, the U.S. Congress dedicated billions
to remedying those and other sites throughout the country. The Superfund
work continues to this day.
Today, companies are more environmentally responsible and better
aware of the need to guard against accidental spills than they were in the
past. Theyre also well informed on what to do when accidents do occur.

In such situations, most companies are quick to contain accidental spills of

toxic material.
Still, spills do happen. Companies and municipalities must also continue to deal with toxins that were dumped as many as 100 years ago. Through
relationships formed over the past two decades with environmental officials
and consulting firms, Midwest Soil Remediation stays busy making these
sites pure and pristine.
COST-EFFECTIVE CLEANUPS
After Superfunds creation, it was only a matter of time before companies
sprang up offering different types of soil remediation services tailored to the
location of toxins, the type of soil and the proximity of water sources.
Midwest Soil pioneered a technology known as thermal desorption to
successfully treat contaminated soil. As the name denotes, the technology
utilizes heat. In the desorption process, organic compounds are extracted from
the soil. A secondary process is then used to neutralize or destroy them.
Other remediation companies utilize either chemical-based processes

or biological methods to treat soil. The advantage of thermal desorption is its

ability to achieve dramatic results soil that is within a tiny fraction of 100
percent pure within a relatively short period of time.
There is also a significant cost advantage in on-site soil remediation. The
client saves money that would have otherwise been spent on hauling massive
loads of dirt somewhere else for cleansing or replacement. In addition, the
process is by nature less time consuming than most in-situ soil treatments, a
process through which the soil is not removed.
The company was started by Fetherlings uncle, Dean Fetherling, in 1991,
and was one of the first to enter into the thermal marketplace. By and large,
most soil-remediation service companies dont have the same capabilities that
we offer, Fetherling says.
Usually, when a company has a problem requiring remediation, its first
step is to hire an environmental consulting firm, says Fetherling. These are
trained experts who assess the problem and outline ways it can be remediated.
In selecting a cleanup company and a process, that consulting firm first looks
at what makes sense, and then what will be most cost-effective.

GOOD WORKERS, GREAT TRAINING

Were in a small industry where everyone knows one another, says
Fetherling. In fact, with the exception of about five permanent office staff,
virtually all of Midwest Soils technicians are contract employees. They go
from project to project and company to company as job requirements dictate,
much the same as oilfield workers do in locations such as western North
Dakota or aerospace engineers do in Southern California.
This is a small, specialized industry and virtually nobody ever walks in
here and says I want to be a soil remediation technician, says Fetherling.
Instead, people are often referred to Fetherling by other companies or by
existing employees.
In hiring contractors for jobs, Fetherling looks for people with backgrounds as mechanics, electricians and heavy-equipment operators. It also
helps if an individual likes going to new places: Midwest Soil Remediation
covers all of North America, and a complex cleanup project can take weeks
or months to complete.
These were all characteristics and skills that described Mike Fetherling
at age 21, when his uncle Dean invited him to join his new company and
he accepted. When a new hire is brought on board, hell be assigned to a
well-seasoned employee for on-site training, Fetherling says. Our formal
training focuses heavily on safety.
The training covers health and safety rules and regulations, handling potentially dangerous substances, machine-specific heavy equipment training

and the types of safety equipment required by different levels of jobs. At some
job sites, a Level B full body suit with supplied air is necessary equipment. But
not at all sites.
Two important elements of training are OSHAs 40-hour Hazardous Waste
Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) course and the
OSHA 10-hour General Industry Training Program. In addition, the training
outlines the companys safety procedures and emphasizes the proper way to
communicate with other employees. Lessons in first aid and CPR, working in
confined spaces and hazard communication are also training priorities.

The way oil and gas are being drilled today eliminates a lot of
the potential for environmental issues. My hat is off to those
guys we all have to live on this planet, and they are doing
a great job at protecting the environment. In the
meantime, there are plenty of legacy sites to keep us busy.
Mike Fetherling

SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT
All of Midwest Soils equipment is designed to be portable although
portability in this case is a rather expansive concept. Thermal desorption
equipment can be huge, and quite often multiple tractor-trailer trips are needed
to haul it to the clients site. Fetherling points out that Midwest Soil does not
own any of its trucks; they are all leased.
Three thermal desorption systems factor heavily in Midwest Soils cleanup
projects. Equipment is designed to be matched to the volume required and the
type of desorption (whether direct or indirect fired).
The 525d Direct Fired Thermal Desorption System can process a maximum of 25 tons of soil per hour. As the term direct fired denotes, it operates
by means of a flame at one end that heats the soil to extract contaminants. This
particular system is tailor-made for sites containing petroleum or petrochemicals. An auxiliary scrubber works in tandem with the desorption system for
projects involving chemicals such as pesticides.
The 420d Direct Fired Thermal Desorption System has a bigger footprint
(75 by 45 feet, versus 60 by 30 feet) than the 525d, and processes a maximum
of 15 tons per hour. This system is geared toward sites contaminated with
chlorinated solvents.

MIDWEST SOIL PERFORMS

ANCILLARY SERVICES
Although Midwest Soil Remediations specialty is thermal
desorption, the company has performed related tasks on numerous
occasions. These were all made necessary by especially complex jobs.
A large-scale cleanup at a former electronics plant in Fayetteville,
Arkansas, provides a case in point. Soil samples revealed heavy
concentrations of chlorinated compounds, including trichloroethene
(TCE); 1,2-dichloroethene (DCE, or vinyl chloride); tetrachloroethene
(PCE); and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). Low levels of toluene and xylene
were also detected.
At the direction of the state of Arkansas and its environmental
consultant, Midwest Soil Remediation employed an indirectly heated
thermal desorption system for this project. In total, 5,725 cubic yards
of contaminated soil was excavated and processed by the desorption
system, which operated for a total of 61 days.
Besides treating the contaminated soil, the company performed
a variety of other services ranging from building a containment pad to
final grading of the site. We completed this project on time and under
budget as well, says Mike Fetherling, vice president of operations.
Closer to Midwest Soils suburban Chicago home, another recent
job involved cleanup at a Lucent Technologies site. This project
necessitated the installation of pumps to assist in groundwater
removal, which facilitated soil cleanup.

The 432i Solvent Extraction System is an indirect-fired system that utilizes steam for soil cleanup. Of the three systems it is the quickest to set up
and disassemble and usually requires a less arduous state and local permit
process. It processes a maximum of 16 cubic yards per hour and is targeted at
sites containing hazardous chlorinated solvents.
In most cleanup jobs, the company will remain on site for several weeks
to months. Its difficult to pinpoint an average length of time because all
cleanup sites are quite different, Fetherling says.
Two variables that affect the speed of cleanups are soil type and the presence of shallow groundwater. Soils in which dense, wet clays predominate
can be slower to work through and remediate.
In addition to desorption systems, other equipment in Midwest Soils
fleet includes tracked excavators, wheel and tracked loaders, screening equipment, compactors, generators, pumps and water treatment equipment. Any of

Midwests ability to do its work on site is quite often a key advantage in

securing a job. This was a big advantage on a series of jobs in the Piceance Basin
region near Rifle in western Colorado. The highly active oil and gas producing
region is extremely mountainous with limited road access.
Soils in the area had become contaminated by drill cuttings and residues
from oil and gas drilling processes, and would have been enormously expensive to haul to a different location for remediation. In some cases, the areas
requiring soil remediation were extremely high in elevation, which exacerbated
this issue. Midwest Soil was able to perform its cleanups on site, with no soil
removal required.
these pieces of equipment can be brought to a site, depending on the nature
of the cleanup.
A GROWING TRACK RECORD
The most challenging job our firm has faced over the years was the cleanup of the William Dick Lagoons in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Fetherling
says. This was a designated Superfund site where a former trucking company
had used a depot to clean liquid-asphalt trucks. High amounts of chlorinated
solvents were used in the cleaning process.
This left behind a gooey mass of both tar and toxic levels of chlorine,
which helped put the site on the Superfund list. Midwest Soil Remediation kept
at this messy job for slightly more than three months. This certainly wasnt our
biggest site, but because of the combination of these substances, the cleanup
was quite difficult, Fetherling says.
One of its longest-duration projects was the cleanup of the Warren County
Landfill in northeastern North Carolina, a large Superfund site. The landfill
was, in fact, created to house PCBs that once lined roadsides in North Carolina.
The toxic roadside materials were painstakingly removed and trucked to the
Warren County Landfill for storage. Public pressure prompted the remediation
of this soil.
For a 13-month period, Midwest Soil Remediation operated a toxic cleanup operation at the landfill. Thanks to a state training grant, approximately half
of the people who staffed the facility were hired locally.

FUTURE OUTLOOK
Most of Midwest Soil Remediations work focuses on sites that have
either been operational for several decades or have been abandoned and are now
being repurposed.
Similarly, Fetherling doesnt anticipate the proposed Keystone Pipeline to
have much of an impact on his companys work. The way oil and gas are being
drilled today eliminates a lot of the potential for environmental issues, says
Fetherling. My hat is off to those guys we all have to live on this planet, and
they are doing a great job at protecting the environment. In the meantime, there
are plenty of legacy sites to keep us busy.
Many such jobs are as near as the corner store. The U.S. is dotted with
hundreds of thousands of gasoline stations, many of which have aging, underground storage tanks. As they get replaced with newer, rustproof tanks, many
sites require remediation and Fetherlings company stands ready to serve.
Whats the key to staying successful? A steady pipeline of new business
certainly helps. New jobs come in through a network of environmental consultants, attorneys, business people and others who are familiar with Midwests
cleanup processes, and more importantly, know its reputation for excellence
and dependability.
Our business model is very simple, Fetherling says. When we contract a
job, we guarantee 100 percent performance and completion on schedule. In the
24 years weve been in business, weve always been able to achieve that. For any
business, that kind of reputation is a great thing to have. GOMC

OIL PRODUCTION
CONTINUES CLIMB
Production goes up considerably in 2014 and looks
like it could continue to increase in 2015 and 2016

il production is expected to
continue rising in 2015 and again
in 2016, but growth isnt expected
to be as strong as it was in 2014.
The U.S. Energy Information
Administration (EIA) announced in
late March that U.S. crude production
increased by 1.2 million barrels to 8.7
million bbl/d in 2014, marking the largest
volume increase since recordkeeping began
in 1900.
Most of the 16.2 percent increase
came from oil plays in North Dakota, Texas
and New Mexico.
WHERE TO STORE IT ALL?
As production continues to rise, the
U.S. is beginning to run out of places
to store its crude oil. Supply has been
outpacing U.S. refiners demand by about 1
million barrels a day on average since early
January, according to the EIA.
As of late March, the EIA says there
were 8.2 million barrels stocked away
and oil inventories were the highest in at
least 80 years. Many of the storage tanks

Since 2009, crude production has
increased every year, and for the past
three years it has grown approximately 15
percent per year.
Annual crude oil production is
expected to grow at a slower rate 8.1
percent this year, according to the EIAs
latest Short-Term Energy Outlook. The

to rise by just 1.5 percent, to 9.5 million

between supply and demand.
The EIAs forecast says the Brent
crude oil prices will average $59 a barrel in

BAKKEN STATES
BATTLING FEDS
Wyoming, North Dakota challenge new rule

Bakken Shale states are fighting
back on new rules the Obama administration announced in early March.
The Obama administration announced
that it will require companies that drill on
federal lands to disclose the chemicals used
in fracking operations. The U.S. Bureau of

consideration for about four years and took
effect in June.
Fracking has moved North Dakota

REACHING NEW

HEIGHTS
SKY-VAC gives hydroexcavators an extra boost to access hard-to-reach areas
By Cory Dellenbach

GETTING INTO TIGHT OIL PAD SITES AND OTHER HARD-TOREACH WORK SITES CAN BE A PAIN FOR HYDROEXCAVATOR
OPER ATORS STRINGING TOGETHER SEVER AL HOSES OR
SLINGING THEM OVER FENCES CAN BE DANGEROUS.
A lot of service providers are stringing hoses together, putting them up
buildings and tying them off or just laying them on the ground, says Jason
White, product development manager for Integrated Chassis Solutions (ICS).
Injuries can happen by doing business that way.
ICS, based in Fort Morgan, Colorado, has developed a solution to the
problem. The companys SKY-VAC SV-120-1, which made its first public
appearance at the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport
(WWETT) Show in Indianapolis in February, is a massive truck-mounted
boom system that can connect to any hydroexcavator.
LONG REACH
Most hydroexcavators can reach 30 to 35 feet, but the SKY-VACs boom
has much greater range. The SV-120-1 boom can reach 126 feet vertically and
84 feet below grade. It also has a 114-foot horizontal reach with 370 degrees
of rotation.
If you have to get across a fence line into a ditch, if you have to get onto
a second floor in the refinery, on rooftops, pretty much anywhere that was
previously inaccessible, we just provided the opportunity for operators to do
that safely, says Jason Harms, vice president of operations. Its an extendedreach vacuum extraction system.
Schwing, a company known for producing concrete pumping booms,
manufactured the SKY-VACs boom system.
Jason [White] worked with Schwing and their team on the engineering
aspect and it was different for them, says Gary Harms, president and CEO.
We had to convince them to try and get out of their way and think about
more than just concrete. Fast forward six months later, and its paying off and
theyre very excited.
ICS, along with Schwing, built the prototype SV-120-1 on a Caterpillar
chassis, but the SKY-VAC product line can be built on any chassis a contractor
prefers. A connection on the back of the SKY-VAC can be changed to fit any

connection on the back, as well as for air, if needed.
You can hook up to any hydrovac that has at least a 5,000 cfm blower
on it, Jason Harms says.

SAFE AND EFFICIENT

Brian Hauser, owner of a small hydroexcavation company in Alberta,
was already looking at the SV-120-1 truck while on display in Indianapolis.
This would be a great fit for what we do, Hauser says. In the oilfields,
we cant get close a lot of the times. Were putting together several feet of hose
and have to warn people to watch out where they are walking. It isnt safe.
In one photo that ICS uses to demonstrate the SV-120-1s advantage,
a hydroexcavator operator who is cleaning out mud tanks has to climb on
top of the tanks and string together hoses, which are draped over other mud
tanks just to clean them out.
With that unit, the way he would clean three mud tanks and the
drilling rig, it would probably take him 24 hours, Gary Harms says. If you
put a SKY-VAC out there and hook the hydrovac to it, youd probably do it in
five or six hours. Although youre paying a higher rate, youre getting it done
in a third of the time.

Hauser says he believes the truck would help his company save money.
We wouldnt have to reposition them every time one needs to be
dumped, Hauser says. We would simply move out the full hydrovac, move
in the empty one, attach it to the SKY-VAC and get to work again. Youre
saving time.
NEXT IN LINE
Even though the first model just came out, ICS is already working on
several new products including two more versions of the SV-120.
The SV-120-2, with the prototype currently in production, will have the
hydroexcavation package (blower, filters, silencers, cyclones, boiler, pump)
along with the water tank and boom all on one chassis. A pull-along debris
tank can be emptied and replaced, all while the SKY-VAC keeps working.
The SV-120-3 would be a pull-behind trailer with the extended boom
and a CAT power pack to run hydraulics. That product would be designed for
companies with large fleets of hydroexcavators or jet/vac trucks.
Integrated Chassis Solutions basic business plan is R&D, says Gary
Harms. This is the first of five product lines were going to introduce. This
one being the one we could get out the fastest. We have manufacturing
figured out and now we can move onto some other products. GOMC

SHOW ROLLS INTO CALGARY
Annual oil industry show adds several new features including an outdoor drilling site

The Global Petroleum Show will be
held June 9-11 at Stampede Park in Calgary,

companies this year down from 2,000
last year and organizers expect about
50,000 attendees. The 2014 show drew

Much of that decline is because of the
state of the global industry, Arnold says.
It obviously has affected attendees
and exhibitors, and we have seen a
decrease in the number of exhibitors
sending employees to cover the show.
Some companies are taking smaller space
and some are canceling, Arnold says.
However, the feedback is that they will

The Global Petroleum Show Awards
are another new feature, formed to celebrate
the people, projects and progress that

Learning, fostering new business relationships and networking doesnt
stop because of the low price of oil, Arnold says. The industry has survived

A SELF-CONTAINED
DEWATERING SOLUTION
In The Round Dewaterings slow-rotating drum creates consistent drying results
By Craig Mandli

ames Penner is asking that professionals think outside the box

when it comes to dewatering. Penners invention, the horizontal
biosolids dewatering system from In The Round Dewatering, was
on display at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment
& Transport (WWETT) Show in February. He believes it is the next
evolution to typical roll-off dewatering boxes.
This unit will speed up the dewatering process, and give you
a more uniform, consistent result, says Penner. We think it is a
great fit across several industries, including septage and municipal
dewatering. We are even testing it right now on frac and tailings
waste from mining areas.

Typically you let the unit run overnight and by morning

you have a dry material ready for disposal or transport.
Then you fill it back up and do it all over again. Its very
energy-efficient, so you just fill it up and let it go.
James Penner, left, the owner of In The Round Dewatering, explains the mechanism behind his
horizontal biosolids dewatering system to two attendees at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment,
Treatment & Transport (WWETT) Show. The system rotates at a pace of one revolution every two hours,
dewatering 18,000 to 25,000 gallons of wastewater at a time. (Photo by Craig Mandli)

James Penner

The units stainless steel drum with perforated plastic tile lining
is mounted on a roll-off frame for easy transport and unloading.
Water trays allow containment of discharge water. An 18,000- to
25,000-gallon batch is mixed with polymer before being filtered in the rotating
drum, driven by a 1/2 hp variable-speed electric motor with a heavy-duty chain
and sprocket. The turning eliminates crusting and wet pockets to produce
uniform, consistent results. The dewatered material dumps easily and the drum
is self-cleaning.
As the water drains, the unit rotates one complete turn every two hours,
says Penner. Typically you let the unit run overnight and by morning you have
a dry material ready for disposal or transport. Then you fill it back up and do it
all over again. Its very energy-efficient, so you just fill it up and let it go.
The unit is 90 inches in width by 20 feet in length. The drum is constructed
of stainless steel, with a powder-coated frame and plastic filter tiles. Tie-down
straps are included for easy transport. The unit can typically be filled in one
and a half to two and a half hours. Following treatment, sewage sludge typically
ranges from 18 to 24 percent of pre-dewatering. Septic sludge ranges from 28
to 40 percent, while grease trap waste typically runs between that of sewage
and septic sludge.
Penner says hes still in the beta testing phase of frac wastewater and
tailings waste, but is encouraged by the results so far. Dryness is greatly
32

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - JUNE 2015

impacted by exact conditions and polymer used, but no liquid remains when
finished. Dried solids to be unloaded are typically 4 to 7 tons per load. Penner
says that efficiency is getting the attention of companies and municipalities
across the country.
We are talking with a lot of private contractors, but with the regulations
for land application always changing, a lot of cities are looking at ways to create
a more uniform biosolids, says Penner. We talked with a lot of municipal
operators at WWETT that were interested in setting up a demonstration. This
is great for them because it eliminates having to use drying beds, saving time
and space.
Penner says that he looks forward to attending the WWETT Show every
year, as the different markets that attend, he believes, are the perfect audience
for the dewatering system.
It not only fits the septic guy, but also the municipal operators and gas
and oil crowd, he says. Those are the people we want to get this product in
front of. I get more follow-up contacts from this show than any place else I
go. These people are very knowledgeable of the industry, and they know what
works and what doesnt. Thats why Im always excited to get here. 317/5397304; www.itrdewatering.com. GOMC

in the past several years as more companies turn to unmanned aerial

going on in the field.
Drones transformed a lot in the industry, says Richard Allen, financial
operations coordinator for the Jack Doheny Companies UAV venture, Doheny
Drones. Companies in the oil and gas industries can do a number of things,
such as flare stack inspections, off- and on-shore oil derrick inspections,
tailings pond inspections, oil spill detection and damage assessment, and gas
emissions monitoring.
Drone technology was pioneered by the U.S. military, and when it came
to commercial applications, industries such as oil, gas, mining and agriculture

what looks like a hand-held video gaming device to control the drone, which
collects and sends back the information it has gathered.
Cenovus Energy, a Canadian oil company with oilsands operations in
northern Alberta, began investigating drones in 2012. Geospatial specialist
Wade Ewen looked into the technology and found it was a good fit for their
needs. Since the company flew its first UAV at the end of 2013, Cenovus has
flown more than 300 flights.
We use them to acquire high-resolution imagery that helps us design a
terrain model to calculate how much dirt we need to move for construction
projects, Ewen says. We have found it to be cheaper and safer than putting
boots on the ground, which meant a traditional surveying crew who might be
near some heavy machines.
Ewen says the drones collect data that is then downloaded into a
computer where it is carefully analyzed. Were able to turn data around faster
and the return on investment has been good, he says.
Cenovus experience isnt unique. Many other companies involved in the
oil and gas industries began looking at drones at about the same time, namely
because of the technological improvements.

Drones provide powerful insight on demand. They

deliver high-quality images as well as quality 3-D graphic
information since they can carry equipment that shoot
and record the laser pulses as they bounce back
and create detailed maps.
Steve Gitlin

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
Several technical advances in recent years have increased the popularity
of drone usage. One of the biggest advances is the ability of UAVs to carry
larger payloads.
We have one drone, for example, that can carry up to 25 pounds, and
you can put just about any sensor or camera on it, Allen says. These more
advanced cameras can take high-quality video and photos up to 50 feet away.
Its amazing.
The ability to carry those heavier loads has expanded what the drones
can monitor, says Steve Gitlin, vice president for marketing strategy and
communication for AeroVironment, a California-based company that makes a
variety of transportation-related equipment, including drones. AeroVironment
monitors BP pipelines as the ground thaws and freezes using drones.
We need to understand how things are going on the ground, and the
drones help us do that, Gitlin says. Drones provide powerful insight on
demand. They deliver high-quality images as well as quality 3-D graphic
information since they can carry equipment that shoot and record the laser
pulses as they bounce back and create detailed maps.
For example, a drone can carefully look at ruts on a gravel road and help
determine how much gravel is needed to fill them in, he says.
Youre 400 feet up in the air and that provides you a vantage point that
was previously unavailable, Gitlin says. The quality of information were
getting from drones is better than we can get anywhere else.
36

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - JUNE 2015

Thats due in large part to the high-quality sensors and cameras that can
be mounted on todays drones, he adds.
Its amazing what you can see, Gitlin says.
Allen says the batteries in drones last longer today than they did just a
few years ago, and that has provided more options for what they are used for
and how often they need to be charged.
Ease-of-use is another reason drone usage has increased in popularity,
says EJ Burrows of Skymatics, a Canadian-based company that uses drones
to provide aerial inspections and surveys for companies, particularly those in
the gas, oil, petrochemical industries and utilities.
A lot of the stuff we do today we could have done three years ago, but
its just easier and its about half the price, he says. As costs go down, I think
their usage will continue to increase.
IMPROVEMENTS AHEAD
As Doheny Drones General Manager Kyle Dehne looks to the future, he
envisions UAVs that can carry even larger payloads.
That really will open the door to being able to have more sensors on
board and getting a clearer look at whats going on, he says.
Other improvements include batteries boasting longer lives and perhaps
drones with quad roter blades that will provide more stability in high winds.
A lot of the places where we operate, the weather conditions arent ideal,
so anything that provides greater stability is key, Dehne says.
Beyond physical improvements, a big leap forward for the industry will
be when regulations are changed involving drone usage beyond the line of
sight, according to those working in the industry. Right now, both the United
States and Canada require that UAVs are only used when the operator can see
them. Thats not the case in other countries.
There are many companies, mostly overseas, who produce fixed wing
drone aircrafts that can travel thousands of miles at up to 90 miles per hour
equipped with infrared cameras, Allen says. Once regulations allow flight
beyond line of sight, oil and gas companies will be able to inspect aboveground pipelines daily for potential leaks.
Skymatics Burrows says the industry will be in a whole different place
if line of sight rules are changed.
The technology exists to operate the drones outside of the line of sight,
but when and if the regulators allow it, I think their use will really take off
since companies will be able to use them for longer projects, he says. If
you combine that change along with longer battery lives, the industry will
compete even stronger with manned aircraft such as helicopters or small
planes, and it will be a better deal, too, since the cost will be less. GOMC

Case Studies

Mobile and Bulk Storage Solutions,

Remediation, Recycling
By Craig Mandli
LINING USED TO EXTEND LIFE OF FRAC TANK FLEET
Problem
A liquid handling and transport company located in the western U.S. maintains a fleet of 500 frac tanks
for rent. The corrosive chemicals stored in the tanks were causing significant damage, and repair and
replacement costs were skyrocketing. The company needed to find a way to protect the interior of each
21,000-gallon tank from its contents, extend the service life of the fleet and control costs. The solution
had to be quick to install so it would not impact business operations.

Solution
The Hi-Chem 21-70 chemical-resistant formulation from Rhino Linings was chosen. The interior of
each tank was shot-blasted to a near white blast (SSPC5), and the elastomeric polyurethane lining was
spray applied at 1/8 inch. The fast cure time allowed the company to have each tank back in service
within 24 hours.

Result
The lining has helped lower the companys refurbishment costs and decrease the amount of maintenance time required by making the tanks more resistant to
corrosion. The company reported no failures in the linings. 800/422-2603; www.rhinoliningsindustrial.com.

TANK FARM ENABLES BULK FUEL STORAGE AT REMOTE SITE

Problem
Mega Precious Metals Monument Bay project in Manitoba, Canada, had an inefficient fuel management
system where fuel was moved one barrel at a time. The companys CEO, Glen Kuntz, sought to turn the site
into a modern and efficient camp that supplied comfort while also reducing its environmental footprint. One
of the critical components in the plan was to utilize bulk fuel, brought in by aircraft, and then transfer it to
collapsible fuel storage bladders.

Solution
The company set up a tank farm using Arctic King collapsible fuel bladders from SEI Industries. The pillowstyle tanks are designed especially for arctic conditions. We bought five one for Jet A fuel, two for diesel,
one for gasoline and a spare, says Kuntz. With the tank farm, we can fly in bulk fuel and fill the bladders
once a year. Collapsible fuel bladders can be folded up to a fraction of their deployable size, making them
easy and cost-effective for transportation to difficult locations. Theyre durable, typically require almost no
site preparation and are more environmentally friendly to the ground beneath them.

Result
Using the Arctic King tank farm, Kuntz says the fuel savings have amounted to between 50 to 60 percent
compared to the way the camp was operating. Thats a significant savings, and the environmental benefits
go all the way down the line, from less consumption of diesel to the reduced transportation of it, he says.

Product Spotlight
Tote cleaning system removes
residue from hard-to-reach areas
By Ed Wodalski
The ToteBlaster (Gamajet IX) from Gamajet, part of the Alfa Laval
Group, quickly scours stubborn residue from intermediate bulk container
tote interiors. Its 7.5-foot cleaning radius and vertical jetting action reaches upper corners and other areas that a pressure washer or brush might
not. The 9-inch-long ToteBlaster fits through a 3-inch opening, weighs
about 4 pounds and can clean totes up to 8 feet tall.
The real advantage of a Gamajet is the 360-degree cleaning pattern,
says Andrew Delaney, vice president of operations at Alfa Laval. You
clean every possible area on the inside of the tote every time.
When used with the ToteBlast Station cleaning system, a 4- by
4-foot tote (275 to 330 gallons) can typically be cleaned in less than four
minutes. The ToteBlast Station includes the Gamajet IX cleaning unit,
vertical multistage pump (TEFC standard, XP optional), starter panel
and timer (NEMA 4X enclosed), insertion tube, customized tote cover,
flanges and hoses.
You set the unit in the tote and push a button on the ToteBlast Station, Delaney says. Theres a timer in the control panel thats set based
on what youre cleaning.
The Gamajets thorough cleaning action reduces the chance of cross
contamination and eliminates potential chargebacks on returned totes.
In the oil, gas and mining industries, you really have to worry about
cross-contamination issues, he says. A lot of the substances inside those
totes are hazardous. So if you dont get them clean, there are added costs

1.

involved with shipping hazardous materials.

The ToteBlaster provides about 1,000 hours
of cleaning action between
maintenance (repair kit
available). The mechanical
seal in the vertical pump is
the only other wear item and can last 1,000 hours, depending on use.
The ToteBlast Station is available in three standard pump/motor options for cleaning powder residues (11 gpm, 90 psi), liquid residues (12
gpm, 200 psi) and dried residues (19 gpm, 200 psi).
Typically when we sell a ToteBlast Station we look at what debris
were cleaning, Delaney says. The max gallons per minute you want to
put into a tote is 19 gpm. And thats mainly because you cant drain the
tote fast enough before it starts filling with water.
The ToteBlaster (operating temperature of 32 to 250 degrees F) has a
pressure range of 50 to 1,000 psi and can be designed for specific cleaning
needs. Dried latex paint, for example, can be removed with 600 psi.
Thats the worst case scenario, Delaney says. For a typical tote
containing oils or sludges, its going to be around 200 psi, which gets
enough velocity for the jet stream to effectively clean. 877/426-2538;
