Bewoulf Movie Analysis
The movie brings the famous poem that was written in the AngloSaxon language. This poem talks about the battles that brave warrior
against different malignant creatures and, although most of us know that
movies usually differ from the original stories, the film gives us the
opportunity to know a little more about how people who from that age used
to live. We also can learn more about how all those heroic battles between
different kingdoms and against mythical monsters those kinds of stories talk
us about.
According to the poem and the movie, the story takes place in
Scandinavia and Beowulf from Geatland, promises to Hrothgar, the Danish
king, that he will kill Grendel, who is a monster that has been devastating
the kingdom. That same night, Beowulf fulfills his word, but then he has to
fight against the mother of the monster. Then, he goes to a dreadful lake
but, instead of finding a monster, he founds a beautiful siren that seduces
him makes him fall in the same curse king Hrothgar did.
The movie brings up to life a good part of Old English literature, which
talks about the various kingdoms from those days lived and fight for their
ideals as well as how important was for them honor they word and die for
what they believed in. We can see how the nations were won of formed and
passed from one generation to another, based on the current kings will.
Also, it shows us the transition from old to new religions in the different
empires from that age.
In regards the language, we can find it in a more poetic way. The
characters tend to use many metaphors in their vocabulary, and I must say
there were several words I had to look for them in a dictionary to find out
what they were talking about. It happened too, that the accent people use in
the movie make me watch it with subtitles, in order to fully understand
some words they said. It is a very formal way of communicate that in these
days, many people do not use in a regular basic, especially people who
English is not our mother tongue.
As a final comment and taking into account that I have not fully read
the original story, I think this movie can help us to know a little more about

how the culture from those times was; although there are some differences
between both of them. We have the chance to know a little more about
English language; how it started and all the changes it has been through
from those times to these days. For us as English teachers it is good to know
some more history and to experience how the language we teach has
changed throughout the ages.
