e welcome Ramadan 1436AH in the year the Muslims of Britain and

Europe will be fasting the longest days in 30 years amidst the scorching
heat of the summer. Fasting, as always is a challenge, a time of reflection,
strengthening our Emaan and increasing in good deeds and charity.

The last twelve months have been witness to a number of natural calamities
around the world, the floods in Pakistan, the devastating hurricane in
Vanuatu Islands, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. The conflict in
Syria is now in its 4th year where over 200,000 lives have been lost
since the conflict began four years ago and a staggering 11 million
people have been forced to flee their homes and three million
children are no longer in school.
Last year the world focused on the Gaza conflict where according to
the UN 2,104 lives were lost, 10,224 people suffered injury (one third of
which were children), a total of 475,000 people were internally displaced.
The efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate by charity organisations that appealed
on Channel S last year continue on to this day. The commendable efforts of
the charity organisations have only been possible due to the generosity that
manifested itself during the month of Ramadan and continued all year long.

This Ramadan will be another opportunity for Muslims around the world to
pause and reflect on the world around us and how we can unite and collectively
ease the difficulties faced by millions. It will be opportunity to experience
hunger during dry and hot days and think of those for whom the feeling of
hunger lingers all year round and the climate adds to the harsh conditions
whether its in the height of summer or in the depth of winter.
Channel S also enters into its 11th year of broadcast. Over the last 9 of those
11 years, Channel S has maintained its position as the Channel of choice when
it comes to charity during the month of Ramadan. Mosques, educational
establishments and international charities continue to make Channel S their
first choice to reach out to the communities in Britain, Europe and the United
States.
Ramadan is the month of giving and mercy, and in it Allah blesses the believers
with forgiveness and being saved from Hellfire. Therefore, whoever is merciful
and giving in Ramadan, Allah will be even more Merciful and Giving, and will
bestow upon him countless bounties and blessings.
Inshallah let us all ask that Allah Azzawajal to bless us with the ability to reap
maximum reward this month and the ability to share from the endless bounties
that He the Almighty has bestowed upon us.

We are not born for

ourselves in this world
We are born for each
other, for love and care
purled.

ow strange life is! How short it is for any of us! We live

in momentous times, although surely not too many
people ponder this fact in the course of daily life.
Our life ends even before we can calculate the success and
failure of our daily actions. One or more of us leave this world
everyday. In mosques we gather for funeral prayers for maybe
a parent, somebodys mother or father, brother or sister, or
for someones relative. This makes us scared of thinking of our
own uncertain time of departing this world.
Still in this temporary life we are obsessed with all the
mundane things. So when we think about finding more
happiness, we consider things like spending quality time with
our family, eating in a good restaurant, taking time for a fun
hobby, buying fancy clothing, car or home, going for a much
needed holiday, things like that. While on the other hand,
people in poverty are wailing across the globe striving for
food, clothes and shelter. Some of them do not have two
meals a day, some do not have clothes to wear, and some are
fighting to death to protect themselves from the clutches of
severe cold. Since the last Ramadan, the situation of violence
in different parts of the world like Middle East and Africa has
worsened as well as natural and man-made disasters taking
place in countries like Nepal (earthquake), Burma (Rohingya
exodus), etc. But we are (sometimes absolutely!) indifferent
to them.
Each year on World Refugee Day, the world honours the
courage and the resilience of million of people across the
globe who have been forced to flee from violence and conflict.
For the first time since the World War II era, the number
of refugees worldwide including Palestinian, Syrian, Iraqi,
Ukranian, Egyptian, African, Afghan, Asian Rohingya refugees
has passed 50 million, the United Nations announced in its
annual Global Trends Report. We are living in an age of the
crudest paradoxes: unbelievable wealth amidst unbelievable
poverty; record levels of food amidst record levels of hunger;
and the paradox of rising economic growth alongside rising

Page 8
RG 2015.indd 8

levels of poverty. Again when it comes to human rights, we

find a vast difference between those rights enjoyed here in the
UK, for example - such as the right to life, the right to food, or
the right to an education - and the daily infringement of these
basic rights for billions of men, women and children in the less
developed countries.
The spirit of helping others to earn God's pleasure is best
reflected in Muslim society in the field of education. The
greatest charity for a Muslim is to learn something and
then teach it to others in large numbers. Thus Muslims have
devoted themselves to others education generation after
generation. There is nothing greater in the whole universe
than knowledge being imparted by one human being to
another. Muslims on a large scale have engaged themselves
in receiving education and imparting it to others, individually
as well as by establishing maqtabs and madrasas, that is,
primary schools and Colleges. During the medieval period,
these madrasas flourished in tens of thousands throughout
the Muslim world. The wealthy people helped in running
these madrasas, not only through Zakah, but also by
making endowments of their properties as these madrasas.
The income from these properties from different kinds of
donations met the needs of these schools. The orphans and
poor people were given stipends over and above free board
and lodging. That is why Bangladeshis in Britain have been
establishing different similar social, educational and cultural
organisations.
The writers of this article believe in the axiom, We know how
to make money but we do not know who to spend money.
We spend the first 20 to 30 years of our lives in acquiring
skilled and marketable talents to earn money, but we are
not taught how to spend money. We are not given guidance
concerning financial transactions, especially spending in the
way of Allahfee Sabil Allah e.g. in Hajj, in social welfare for
the poor, on widows and orphans or on relatives and friends
to help them out.

10/06/2015 18:26:35

The Qur'an encourages the Muslim to donate their funds:

the likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of
Allah, is as the likeness of a grain that sprouts seven spikes.
In every spike there are 100 grains, and Allah multiplies for
whom He will (2:261). Giving charity is thereby not seen
as detracting from income, but rather as a multiplication
in terms of spiritual observance. It is like one who sows a
good grain of wheat in the field from which grows a plant on
which sprout seven ears and each ear yields hundred grains.
As a result, one grain is worth a total yield of 700 grains.
When one spends in the way of Allah, he or she receives in
return (reward in the Hereafter) on the scale of one to seven
hundred.
In this connection, in the field of social reform, Channel S
has been maintaining its position as the Channel of choice
for about nine years when it comes to charity during the
month of Ramadan. Mosques, educational establishments,
humanitarian institutes and international charities continue
to make Channel S their first choice to extend to the
communities in Britain, Europe and the United States.
This is mainly because Channel S has firmly upheld its
ethos of providing a platform for charity organisations to
demonstrate their work transparently throughout the year.

Provided humanitarian assistance to the disaster areas

of different parts of the world including Nepal, Haiti,
Indonesia, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine,
Syria, Iraq, Ethiopia, Central Africa, Sudan and Afghanistan.

Provided assistance to the development and

establishment of schools and educational institutions
including mosques and madrasas in England, Ireland,
Canada, Italy, Germany, and Australia.

Arranged iftaar and sahri in the month of Ramadan and

Qurbani in Eid-ul-Adha for the poor in many countries
around the world.

Jointly with Ibrahim College launched a new Umrah and

fundraising project called Makka Twin Peaks Challenge.
There is a mounting culture of charitable activities
throughout Ramadan, the month of mercy. May Allah bless
us with the ability to gain maximum reward in this month
and the ability to share from the infinite gifts He has given
upon us so that we can expand our offerings and help build
a more secure world!
May Allah forgive us! Ameen!

Always before starting a charity programme a very skilled

team of Channel S use to visit every organisation more than
once to see their activities.
The expert team use their won way of having a clear sense
of financial transactions of the relevant institution.
Apart from the Live Appeal programme the team give
support and advice from their own experience on every
details of fundraising.
A Ramadan Magazine is published every year to introduce
and highlight different details of an organisation to ensure
transparency and accountability
To facilitate the preparation of fundraising prior to
the month of Ramadan, Channel S provides each of the
organisations/institutions with training and technical
guidelines called Fundraising Guidance Pack.
To find out whether the money collected from Live
Ramadan Appeal has been spent properly Channel S
observes the on-going activities after the month of Ramadan
and broadcast a special live programme called Charity in
Progress.
Over the past 8 years, the most popular television of the
community, Channel S has been working tirelessly pouring
out itself for humanitarian and social activities or to aid
social reformation. In keeping with the community, Channel
S has themselves been involved in various social activities
and welfare of the suffering people in Bangladesh and many
countries around the world:

Channel S viewers contributed over a million pound last

year to the victims of the most terrible religious conflict in
recent memory, the Rohingya Muslims.

To promote the teachings of the Holy Quran, Channel S

successfully held its third nationwide Qiraat competition, Q
Factor 3 and distributed the Quran translated in Bangla and
Nepalese language in India, Nepal, the United Kingdom and
around the world.

Brief History
Stepney Shahjalal Mosque was established in 1980 by the community elders and
youth in the corner of the Shandy Park in a Caretaker's Hut. Initially there were
facilities to accommodate approximately 40-50 worshippers. In late eighties, due
to the increasing demand, Tower Hamlets Council granted permission to extend
prayer facilities by installing a portable building. Since then further extensions have
been built to accommodate increasing worshippers. By 2002 with the support of
community leaders and worshippers, the land for the Mosque was purchased from
Tower Hamlets Council. In 2005, additional portable buildings were installed to
accommodate approximately 800 worshippers inside the Mosque, but approximately
500-700 worshippers still pray outside in the park every Jummah come rain or shine.
In 2010, full planning permission was granted to build a new Mosque large enough
to accommodate more than 3000 people.

Any charity you give shall be for the sake of

GOD. Any charity you give will be repaid to you,
without the least injustice
....................................
The Holy Quran, 2:272

Progress and Ongoing Activities

The Mosque is open for 5 times daily prayers, Jummah, 2 Eid prayers and Tarawih in
Ramadan. There are separate prayer facilities for Women. Other activities include
Children's Evening Madrasha, Arabic language Class for adults, Islamic and Social
Studies Classes for Women, Supplementary and Homework Support Classes, and
Weekend Islamic and Social Studies Classes for all and various activities throughout
the year.
Future Plan
Ongoing work is progressing towards starting the foundation of the new Mosque.
The new Mosque will now be built in 2 phases. Since 2013, all outstanding conditions
from the Council have been met. Temporary prayer facilities have been built to start
phase 1 of the construction. Hoarding around site has been put up and 10 trees on
site have been cut down. Site for phase 1 is now being demolished. We urgently
require minimum 1 million to start the foundation work.

Brief History
In 1993, a community in Nottingham, moved by the devastation of the Bosnian war,
sprang into action. A small group of volunteers began collecting money, clothes and
medicine for the people of Bosnia.
Muslim Hands, an international aid agency and NGO, grew from this grass roots
movement and since these first efforts, we have responded to countless more
emergencies, as well as establishing long term projects such as schools, healthcare
clinics and livelihood programmes worldwide. We are working in over 50 countries
and have field offices in over 30 of these. By working closely with our partners
and offices on the ground, we are able to distribute aid in an effective, efficient,
transparent and wholly accountable manner and to make a lasting difference to the
communities we work with.

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: The Prophet (peace_

be_upon_him) said: A beggar has the right
though he may be riding (a horse)

Dawud :: Book 9 : Hadith 1661

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Dedicated to tackling the root causes of poverty around the world, Muslim Hands
is passionate about working beyond the provision of immediate relief, towards
supporting communities over the long-term. We are currently supporting education,
water, health and livelihood projects across four continents, as well as running a
dedicated orphan sponsorship scheme.

Brief History
The UK Islamic Mission (UKIM), founded in 1962 is one of the oldest nation-wide
Islamic organisations in the UK. Its humanitarian relief and development projects
have supported the needy in numerous countries including Bangladesh, Somalia,
Pakistan, Palestine and Syrian refugees. The main humanitarian projects include
emergency response to the disasters, orphan care, education, healthcare, supporting
children with special needs, water and sanitation and mosque building projects.
Being an organization that has a deep concern for humanity, relief and welfare work
also forms an important aspect of its work. It helped all people who are in need,
anywhere in the world, regardless of their religion, race, nationality, colour, gender
or political beliefs.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
The UKIM focuses its efforts to achieve the following aims:

Developing the community with a network of institutions, to serve the needs

Narrated Umm Bujayd: She took the oath of
allegiance to the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) and
said to him: Apostle of Allah, a poor man stands
at my door, but I find nothing to give him. The
Apostle of Allah said to her: If you do not find

Brief History
Muslim Charity was established in 1999 with a group of volunteers and today we
are partners with United Nations (UNRWA). We have always taken initiatives with
a diverse range of projects which have been beneficial to communities around the
world. We do not just deliver our projects but work for the dignity of the communities,
and this commitment has been unshakable. To achieve our goals we have got a strong
network of partners, which are local organisations of the communities we work for.
Following this structure, we try and reach out at the root cause and try to mitigate it.
We work majorly for Maternal Health, Women Livelihood, Water, Orphans and, last
but not the least, for the Street Children in Bangladesh.

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub: The Apostle of

Allah (peace be upon him) used to order us to
pay the sadaqah (zakat) on what we prepared
for trade.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

One of the most important and crucial ongoing projects of Muslim Charity in
Bangladesh are the "Street Children Project". We are rescuing children from the
streets and bringing them to a shelter, which we have established in Sadarghat,
Dhaka. We are giving these street children education, clothes, food, hygiene and
sanitation and a safe place to sleep to avoid them being abused or trafficked. We
are also providing thempsychosocial treatment and trying to reunite them with their
parents. We are also sponsoring their education to secure them in the future. We
want to give them the chance every child deserves.
Under Honouring Our Mothers campaign we are working for maternal health
around the globe. Besides having five established maternity hospitals in Pakistan,
we are providing incubators, ambulances, safe deliveries and Fistula treatment in
various parts of the world. In Bangladesh, we have recently supported and sponsored
CMH in Dhaka for heart surgeries for children born with heart problems. Besides
that we have joined hands with Friendship, a renowned organisation in Bangladesh,
who are running hospitals on ships around the coastal areas. We will be establishing
safe mother houses which will provide locals who do not have access to hospitals
at all, with initial treatment during their pregnancy. Furthermore, we will also be
preparing a pool of patients and inviting satellite clinics to these sites for treatment
and surgeries whenever they are needed.

Brief History
The early Muslims settled in York about 40 years ago. They began their worship in
a house, but as the numbers grew, a Mosque and Islamic Centre was established in
Bull Lane in 1982. One of the beauties of the Muslim community in York is that it
is comprised of many different nationalities praying as one jamaat. Our numbers
have grown significantly over the last decade, and the current facilities for up to four
hundred worshippers are insufficient.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
A total of 1.5 million is required for completion of the building project. To preserve
the planning permission, we have divided the project in two phases. Phase 1, will
involve construction of water tight building with doors, windows and electrics. The
building will be used for large congregations like Friday and Eid Prayers. The cost of
Phase 1 is 738,000 and the Building Contractor to build Phase 1 has been chosen.
The construction work is planned to commence in first week of May 2015, inshaAllah.

Charity shall go to the poor who are suffering in

the cause of GOD, and cannot emigrate
...................................
The Holy Quran-2:273

Future Plan
Fundraising for Phase 1 is well underway, and we have raised over 600,000 so far.
So we are looking to raise remaining 138,000 for the completion of this phase.
Hence, we are reaching out to our brothers and sisters, supporters and friends within
the UK and internationally to help us raise the remaining amount.
With Phase 1, we will have basic facility in the form of a completely built structure
to accommodate the growing numbers of worshipers. This basic facility will also be
a mean to replace our temporary Portacabin structure, which accommodates 200
people regularly. This structure has gone past its recommended usage life and needs
replacing urgently.

some of the worlds most vulnerable and needy people. Like many charities, Orphans
in Need is committed to the alleviation of all forms of poverty and deprivation, in
all parts of the globe. However, the organisations primary focus is on orphans and
widows; often the weakest members of any society, and the most affected by the
scourge of poverty.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
Currently Orphans in Need is instigating, running or financing a number of poverty
alleviation projects in Asia and Africa. Much of this work is centred on orphan
sponsorship, the construction of orphanages as well as maintenance of widows
and their families. We currently support over 9,000 children through our orphan
sponsorship programme.

Any charity you give, or a charitable pledge

you fulfil, GOD is fully aware thereof. As for the
wicked, they will have no helpers

1) Orphan sponsorship For just 1 a day (30 a month) you can ensure that a
destitute orphan child receives secure shelter, food, medical care and an education.
2) Orphans Home Kashmir With our Delhi Orphans Village established we have
already made plans for the next home in our network. Kashmir is one of the worlds
most impoverished countries torn apart by war, poverty and personal hardship.
Building a high quality Centre of Excellence is a huge challenge but one in which we
are confident of success please donate as much as you can.
3) Widow Food Parcels For just a 30, you can ensure that a widow and her family
receive enough food to sustain them for an entire month. With a regular payment,

Brief History
Al Quran Academy London is a UK based International Islamic Dawah charity set up
in 2010 with the mission of worldwide free Quran distribution. Through our various
distribution programmes and educational seminars, we endeavor to create Islamic
awareness by spreading the authentic word of Allah to help eradicate misconceptions
and superstitions about Islam that stem from a lack of knowledge.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
Alhamdulillah, Al Quran Academy London has already distributed nearly half a million
copies of the Holy Quran with simple Bengali translation in the Bengali speaking
zone of Bangladesh, India and expatriates in Europe, America, Canada, Australia,
Malayasia and Middle East. We have taken steps to extend our distribution of the
Holy Quran with English translation to countries across the western hemisphere and
the Nepali translation in Nepal. We are looking into the possibility of Hindi and Urdu
translations to include.
Charities (Sadaqah) shall go to the poor, the
needy, the workers who collect them, the new
converts, to free the slaves, to those burdened
by sudden expenses, in the cause of Allah, and
to the travelling alien.
..................................
The Holy Quran, 9:60

Alongside our existing projects such as our popular Friends of Quran scheme, we
have also devised an innovative project called LightHouse. This project allows our
donors (hailing from Bangladesh) to take responsibility for Quran distribution for their
own union (home town), thereby making the process faster and more personalised.
Alhamdulillah, this project has been very well received and gains popularity by the
day.
Al Quran Academy London distributes free Quran amongst GPA 5 achieving students,
public libraries, media, prisoners, intellectuals and various professionals around the
country.
The sponsorship cost of one copy of the Holy Quran is only 2. You can sponsor
2000 copies for your Union, or 500 copies for your parents, or however many you
are capable of sponsoring. We offer the option of printing the details of the donor/
person or organisation of choice on the front page of the sponsored copies (minimum
100 copies).

Brief History
Muslim Aid is a relief and development agency set up in the United Kingdom in 1985
to provide humanitarian assistance to disaster affected countries and to help poor
and vulnerable communities.
Over the last 29 years, Muslim Aid has delivered services in over 70 countries
worldwide.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
At Muslim Aid, our prime focus has always been on delivering aid in the most effective
way, and in recent years, we have extended our aim to encourage long-term support
to enable people to rebuild their lives in the wake of a conflict or natural disaster.
In 2014, we responded to the plight of the people in conflict-affected areas such as
Gaza and Syria by providing essential items such as food and hygiene kits to reduce
the chance of spreading disease.

GOD advocates justice, charity, and regarding

the relatives. And He forbids evil, vice, and
transgression.
....................................
The Holy Quran, 16:90

2014 was mired with natural disasters such as the South Asia floods. Muslim Aid
responded rapidly with food and medical supplies for India and Pakistan as well
as setting up a mobile health clinic. In addition to responding to emergency causes
with immediate needs, we have also aimed to enable people to live independent,
self-sufficient lives, with long-term vision to alleviate poverty and inequality. Our
long-term projects include education, healthcare, water and sanitation programmes.
We also continued to implement our specialised programmes to serve people living
in some of the most impoverished communities in the world. Over 5,500 children
benefitted from our one-to-one child support programme in 17 countries. Our
Ramadan and Qurbani programme benefitted over 431,000 people around the
world.
On a local level, Muslim Aid established its UK Development department in 2011
to serve the UKs most needy and has expanded its efforts annually ever since.
The programme has particular focus on marginalised and vulnerable groups within
society such as the unemployed youth, the elderly and homeless during the harsh
winter months, as well as women and children exposed to violence at home. As a
result, Muslim Aids work in the UK benefitted over 7,800 people in 2014 alone.

Brief History
The East London Mosque has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the
largest Muslim institutions in Europe. Founded in 1910 as the London Mosque Fund,
it was renamed the East London Mosque when three houses were purchased in 1910
in Commercial Road. In 1975, it had to relocate to Whitechapel Road, then in 1985,
the distinctive red-brick Mosque opened to the world. At first it seemed generously
spacious, but before long it began to overflow and there was hardly room for its
growing number of projects. The East London Mosque ran a successful campaign to
acquire adjoining land in 1999, then in 2001, HRH Prince Charles and HRH Prince
Mohamed al-Faisal launched the project to build the London Muslim Centre which
opened to great acclaim in June 2004. It wasnt long before congregations and
projects reached capacity, so in 2009, the next phase of development of the East
London Mosque commenced with the building of the nine-storey Maryam Centre.
Focused on delivering substantial facilities for women and an accessible visitor centre,
it opened in July 2013.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
said: If I had (a mountain of) gold, I would

Brief History
iQra International has fast become a household charity name in the UK and donors
have visibly seen the work that has been carried out in order to bring changes to the
lives of poor disabled children.
Since 2010, not only have we seen a major transformation in the way we provide
care, we have equally seen transformations of lives through simple or sometimes
even complex interventions by the iQra Academy Medical Team.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
We believe a better service focusing on more life changing results can be provided
for disabled children. That is why we have decided to implement the iQra Disabled
Children's Hospital which has now become the flagship project of the The iQra

specialist care and accommodation for disabled patients.
The Hope for Disabled Children (HFDC) UK Tour is in its third year running and
continues to give us renewed hope and purpose. Its strength and success is evident
due to the overwhelming support at each event by donors and patrons across the
country.
iQra International will continue to have faith in the support that is shown by CH
S viewers every year, and will therefore be seeking to raise a significant amount of
funds during the month of Ramadan which is needed to complete phase 2.
We give special thanks to all CH S viewers and organisers from various cities that
took part in the HFDC UK Tour, helping to raise much needed funds for the poor

Brief History
Imam of Haram Shaik Abdul Rahman Sudais and his teacher Shaik Mohammed bin
Saleh inaugurated Newcastle Central Mosque in 2003. The mosque at that time was
in an old Victorian building, that has now been demolished and a new mosque phase
one is completed.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
Since its establishment, the mosques services have expanded to keep up with
a rapidly growing demand. Activities and events now range from a simple prayer
gathering to afterschool and weekend Islamic classes for men, women and our
children, summer school, community events, providing Islamic advice on social
problems, holding Islamic awareness programmes for Non-Muslims and Dawah
training.

And they have been commanded no more than

this: to worship Allah, offering Him sincere
devotion, being True (in faith); to establish
regular Prayer; and to practise regular Charity;
and that is the Religion Right and Straight.
..................................
The Holy Quran-98:05

As a result of these increase in activities, the mosque is struggling to cope up within

the temporary setup. Therefore, the new mosque project was started, which will
provide modern purpose-design facilities across four floors, including: wadu area,
main prayer hall, womens prayer hall, well-equipped classrooms, fully stocked
library, funeral services, welcome area with caf facilities, state of the art fitness
services for both men and women, multi-purpose hall available for events for private
functions, and proposed new flats.
Future Plan
To complete the remaining project, funds are required. The mosque is actively looking
for donors who will help us for the sake of Almighty Allah to raise the remaining
amount. To make the entire project possible, it is divided into phases. With the grace
of Allah, and generous donations of kind-hearted people like you, Phase One has
been completed and Phase Two is ready to be started. The Phase Two will be all the
structural work with concrete slabs. There will be four levels of slabs, i.e. basement,
first and second floor and roof. In order to commence Phase Two, 1 million is
needed. Alhamdulillah there are pledges already made by few donors for 500,000.
The rest of the funds need to be raised.

Brief History
Newbury Park Masjid (NPICC) is a community based registered UK charity, which
began in September 2005, taking the initiative to establish a Masjid in Newbury
Park, Ilford, Essex.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
In March 2008, NPICC purchased a plot of land costing 180,000 in Oaks Lane
measuring 0.29 acres. Alhamdulillah after meeting all requirements by the local
council and gaining planning approval in 2010 construction is now well underway.
The total project cost is 730,000.
Following on from installation of the foul and surface water drainage systems, the
basement structural work is now complete with the reinforced concrete roof and
retaining walls in place, Alhamdulillah! We are now in the next stage which involves
the building of the remaining part of the Masjid.

The prophet (SAW) replied to a question: Give

(regular charity) out of your property, for truly
it is a purifier, and be kind to your relatives and
acknowledge the rights of the poor, neighbours
and (those in need who seek your help).
...........................................................................
Fiqh-us-Sunnah, Volume 3, Number 3

Currently on site we have a temporary structure where we are providing facilities for
5 daily prayers, Jummah, Eid Salaah and Tarawih. We also hold weekly classes and
gatherings for both brothers and sisters.
NPICC wants not only to provide for regular congregation prayers but to be a hub
for the local community for Muslims and non-Muslims. Some further activities
include youth clubs, Sunday Football, regular community events such as BBQs and
community litter picks.
Future Plan
Our aim is to complete the construction of the Masjid by the end of the year
InshaAllah, but to ensure that we reach this target we will need your continued
support. We sincerely request your help and pray that you assist us in contributing
generously in making this vision a reality. We require a further 300,000 to complete
the project.

Brief History
Noor Ul Islam Trust is a registered UK charity that has been running for 25 years
(formed in 1990). It provides support services to the community in East London
and beyond. As well as running a Mosque, the Trust provides educational services,
especially through our schools (pre School, full time Islamic primary school,
Madrassa and Aalimah department), which now benefits over 800 students on an
annual basis. Due to the increasing demand of our services and the existing premises
no longer being suitable, the Trust decided to develop its main sites, which were
separate buildings to have a large four storey building to house its prayer facilities
and most of its other services.
The Trust has established excellent links with the local community, local authority,
Police, faith groups and football clubs, demonstrating that a Mosque should be at
the heart of the community.

The Prophet replied of a question saying: Give

(regular charity) out of your property, for truly
it is a purifier, and be kind to your relatives and

and (those in need who seek your help).

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Alhamdulillah planning permission to build the new premises was given in 2011 and
since then we have moved our Mosque and other essential services next door to a
temporary site. By the grace of Allah swt, demolition of the site, piling and excavation
have been completed.
Future Plan
Our current appeal is for the prayer hall spaces, Ghusl/mortuary facilities, Classrooms
and the Wudhu area. We estimate that this will cost approximately 900,000. The
slabs, basement and part of the substructure will cost 1.5 million. The facilities for
the basement will include a gym, library, medical room, funeral preparation area
amongst other services.

RAMADAN SPIRIT
CAN HEAL

OUR FRACTURED
WORLD
- Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari

asting in the lunar month of Ramadan

is one of the five pillars of Islam and
its main aim, according to the Quran
(chapter 2, verse 183), is to create Godconsciousness (taqwa in Arabic) among
believers.
Taqwa guides and propels a Muslim
towards living a virtuous life and
developing some inner qualities, such
as integrity and self-discipline; it also
shapes believers life and transforms their
character with a positive drive for action
in society. The physically challenging and
spiritually intense month-long fasting
from dawn to dusk in the month of
Ramadan is a divine gift to believers to
become harbingers of good to people
around.
Behind the disciplining of our natural
thirst, hunger and base desires, fasting
prepares us to contemplate the deeper
meaning of life our fleeting existence
on earth, connection with God,
relationships with fellow human beings
and obligation to the wellbeing of the
environment. A visible positive change in
Muslim behaviour in the noble month of

Ramadan humility, patience, fortitude,

spiritual journey, etc impacts their
personal lives as well as others in the
neighbourhood and community.
Ramadan teaches Muslims the ethos of
share and care, extra generosity, respect
and giving preference to fellow human
beings; these values are greatly needed
now more than ever in our unequal
society and fractured world. The month of
Ramadan is indeed a blessing for Muslims,
for them to be a blessing to the rest of
humanity; it embodies the service ethos
of the religion of Islam.
But, is it our reality now?
Charity giving in Muslim communities
multiplies during Ramadan and Muslims
do this for the pleasure of God alone. The
Islamic concept of giving to the poor and
needy is a duty, not a favour. And in their
wealth there is a share of the poor and
the dispossessed as their right, says the
Quran (chapter 51, verse 19). In Britain,
Muslims are known as the top charity
givers.
Whether practicing or cultural, Muslims

have a special affinity for fasting during

Ramadan; many thoroughly transform
their character, attitudes, behaviour and
lifestyles for a whole month.
Muslims believe that the Quran was
revealed to the Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessing be upon him)
in Ramadan; the distinctive first
message, Read, makes this a month
of seeking knowledge and engaging in
contemplation; many will be reciting and
hearing the Quran; some will memorise
parts from it.
How lovely the world would be if only the
text in the Quran were understood with
context and followed properly!
Ramadan has a distinctive message for
minority Muslims in the West. It demands
from them positive and ethical action, a
unilateral task to create a better society.
Being true to Islam means being a good
citizen and human being. In fact, the
essence of Muslim morality is to be good
to others, without being judgemental.
While other Islamic rituals are noticeable
to people, fasting is not; it is a ritual that
represents a unique self-surrender to God.

Page 34 | Ramadan Magazine 2015 | www.chsuk.tv

RG 2015.indd 34

10/06/2015 18:27:21

Whoever does not give up forged speech

and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his
leaving his food and drink - according to a
Prophetic tradition.
Fasting is about the burning of ones
desire and ego in order to conquer our
base instincts, such as self-gratification,
arrogance and a wasteful extravaganza.
In an unprecedented commercialisation
and sexualisation in our world it is
easier to fatten our egos, nurture our
greed and increase our impatience. The
easy accessibility of instant messaging,
Facebook, Twitter, etc, can make us
slaves to our ever-new technological
gadgets. We have very little free time to
think and relax; still less time to spend
with our near and dear ones even the
elderly and children in our own family.
We live fast-paced lives; we want to be
in lifes fastest lane and beat others, yet
we do not think about the possibility of a
crash.
We are always in a hurry!
Much of our modern way of life is eating

away our souls; we are gradually turning

into human robots. We fear discussing
tough issues such as morality and
ethics lest we are seen as dogmatic or
extremist by others. We have become
too rights-based, but expect a higher
level of responsibility from others our
elected representatives, government, the
police and public servants.
But a society needs people who strongly
feel a sense of duty to all people. Here
comes the need for moral education and
citizenship training, not just for political
and social unity but to address human
cravings for peace.
Every year Ramadan brings a unique
opportunity to train Muslims to soulsearch, introspect, recharge our energy
and revitalise our inner selves. Fasting is
the antidote to selfishness and extreme
materialism in our lives. It helps us to
stand firm on positive morality and
strengthen our conscience. Fasting is
a shield against evil to survive and
succeed; it reminds a believer that real

success is not so much about this world

but the hereafter.
When it comes to public expression of
religious rituals Muslims are probably
on top of others in faith communities.
But sadly, some amongst us have big
contradictions in our practical day-to-day
life; we must stop being just a Ramadan
Muslim.
Ramadan brings a unique festivity in
Muslim life; can this month bring a
heightened spirituality with a deeper and
sustainable positive change in our lives?

Zakah
Distribution of the Bounties of Allah

efinition of Zakah
Literally
Zakah
means
blessing,
purification, increase and goodness. It
is so called as it blesses the wealth from which
it is taken and protects it from misfortunes. Ibn
Taimiah said, The soul of one who gives Zakah is
blessed and so is his wealth.
Technically Zakah is defined as A determined
portion taken from wealth and allocated to those
deserving it, by a Quranic injunction. Sometimes
Zakah is referred to in the Holy Quran as Sadaqah
(alms). The Quran says, Of their goods take
alms, that so thou mightest purify and sanctify
them; and pray on their behalf, verily thy prayers
are a source of security for them. (Surah AlTaubah, No.9, Verse: 103). In an authentic hadith,
the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to his
Companion Mu`adh, when he was sent to Yemen
as governor, Tell them that Allah has made Zakah
obligatory for them, that it should be collected
from the rich and distributed among the poor.

Calculating Your Zakah

It is difficult to calculate the completion of one
year on each item of wealth, because purchase
dates may vary. To overcome this difficulty, a
practical method is to fix a date, for example on
the 1st of Ramadan, calculate your total wealth on
that date and calculate Zakah, thereforth.
1. Zakah on Pure Gold and Gold Jewellery
Zakah should be calculated at 2.5% of the market

value as on the date of valuation (in our case we

consider 1st of Ramadan).
2. Zakah on Precious and Semi-Precious Stones
There is some contention on whether these are to
be considered for valuation. In my humble opinion
if they have a value, then they calculate towards
your wealth, and it is on the wealth that Zakah is
mandatory. One may calculate the saleable value
of Items at hand on the date of Zakah Calculation.
3. Zakah on Silver
Zakah is to be paid on silver in pure form or
jewellery, utensils, decorative items and all
household items including crockery, cutlery made
of silver at 2.5% of the prevailing market rates.
4. Zakah on Cash and Bank Balances
Zakah should be paid at 2.5% on all cash balance
and bank balances in your savings, current or FD
accounts. The amount technically should be in
the bank for one year. Usually it happens that
the balance keeps on changing as per personal
requirements. You may make your best judgment
and the best way is to pay on remaining amount
on the day of calculation.
5. Zakah on Loans Given, Funds, etc.
Zakah is payable by you on loans you have given
to your friends and relatives. It should be treated
as cash in hand. You may deduct loans payable
by you to arrive at the net present value of your
wealth. Zakah is payable on all Government bonds,
public sector bond, paid-up insurance premiums,

Page 38 | Ramadan Magazine 2015 | www.chsuk.tv

RG 2015.indd 38

10/06/2015 18:27:24

your paid-up portion of provident funds, Government bills

receivables, etc.

For crops dependent partly on rain water and partly on other

water, the Zakah applicable would be 7.5% of produce.

6. Zakah on Landed Property

Zakah is not payable on personal residential house even
if you have more than one and meant for residential
purpose only. Also Zakah is not applicable on property
given on rent irrespective of how many. However Zakah is
payable on the rental income.
However, if your intention of holding properties is to sell
at a future date for a profit or as an investment, then Zakah
is payable on the market value. Also, if your intention of
holding properties changes in the current year, i.e. from
self use to business then you need to pay Zakat on that
property value

10. Zakah on Animals

On all grazing animals like goats, sheep, camel, cows, chickens,
the consensus Zakah payable is one animal/bird for every 40
animals owned. However you may wish to give cash in lieu of the
animal/bird itself.

7. Zakah on Business
This is for Business Persons only. No matter what business
you are into, youve got to pay Zakat on all stock in trade.
The stock must be valued at its landed cost price. If you
have any bills receivable (sales given on credit) then you
need to add the same towards calculations.
Deduct the amounts due to your suppliers and deduct
the loans on stock on the date of calculation. Dead stock
should be calculated on scrap value or its saleable value.
Damaged stock should also be valued at its scrap value.
Be honest in the calculations, as Zakat is an insurance on
your stock directly from Allah and who better an insurer
than Him.
There is no Zakat on factory buildings or any kind of
machinery, but there is Zakat on products produced
in the factory (i.e. finished goods value). Please refer to
a competent scholar who can shed more light on your
specific issues.
8. Zakah on Partnership Firms
Zakah can be paid either by the firm or separately by the
owners. If the firm is not paying, and the partner wants to
calculate his share, he should take the amount standing
to his capital and loan account as per the last balance
sheet. Add his estimated share of profit till the date zakat
is calculated. This can only be estimated as it is difficult to
calculate the exact profit or loss between an accounting
year.
9. Zakah on Agricultural Product
Zakah is payable on all agricultural produce including
fruits, commercially grown flowers, vegetables and all
types of grains at the harvest time itself. The passing of one
year does not apply for agricultural produce. If there are
two or more crops on the same land per year, then Zakah
has to be paid as many times on the crop, irrespective of
the time.
The formula for Zakah calculation on agriculture is as
follows:
On crops dependent purely on rain water it will be 10% of
produce.
On crops not irrigated through rain water but use canal
water, tank water, bore well and open wells, the Zakah is
5% of the produce.

11. Liabilities Deductions

If you have any pending tax payable to the Government, as of the
date of Zakah calculation, then the same may be deducted before
arriving at the net worth. If you have taken any loans from any
person or institution, and if you have not already deducted the
same from any of the above sections, then you can deduct your
payables over here. Please be truthful, as Zakah is a sure way of
protecting ones wealth if Zakah has been paid on it regularly and fully.

Balancing
spirituality
and food
- Imam Ajmal Masroor

@ AjmalMasroor

ood has a great significance in Islam. It is associated with

ones relationship with Allah. Chapter 20, verse 81 of the
Quran states: Eat of the good and wholesome things
that We have provided for your sustenance, but indulge in no
excess herein.
The physical body is a gift from God; it is given to humans as an
amanah (in trust) to take care of for a fixed period. How much
food is consumed and the choice of food has a direct impact
on the physical and spiritual well-being of the person. The food
that you consume affects your behaviour and personality.
Wholesome, natural and healthy food assists the development
of a good personality.
Overeating has long been frowned upon in Islam as it is thought
to increase worldly appetites and cause sluggishness, thereby
dulling the soul, hampering spiritual growth and increasing
physical ailments.
The blessed Prophet said: The children of Adam fill no vessel
worse than their stomach. Sufficient for him is a few morsels
to keep his back straight. If he must eat more, then a third
should be for his food, a third for his drink, and a third left for
air. (Sunan al-Tirmidh)
Islam sees health and well-being as much more than just
bodily health: well-being or tranquility requires a strong
relationship with ones spirituality, good physical health,
mental happiness, a sense of purpose and good character
and relationships. Islam makes a strong connection between
food and worship and teaches that all forms of worship have
a deeper purpose and impact and contribute in some way to
individual and social well-being.

In chapter 7, verse 31 the Quran is categorical: O CHILDREN

of Adam! Beautify yourselves for every act of worship, and eat
and drink [freely], but do not waste: verily, He does not love
the wasteful!

Islam thus creates a sense of responsibility in people to take

a healthy living lifestyle as normal and through fasting in
the month of Ramadan teaches one to learn to manage and
practice spirituality and not to eat excessively. The essential
part of spirituality in food is that one is grateful and thankful
for the food one gets.
The blessed Prophet once said: God has a right over you; your
body has a right over you. To strike a balance between the
needs of the physical body and ones spiritual needs, one must
on the one hand consume the right type and amount of food
and on the other hand develop excellent inter-personal skills.
The blessed Prophet Muhammad said: I have only been
sent for the perfection of character. Fasting in the month
of Ramadan is an opportunity to make significant changes in

Page 40 | Ramadan Magazine 2015 | www.chsuk.tv

Pre

ones lifestyle and develop the resolve to make

healthy living choices.
This Ramadan try the following five things to
gain spiritual control over your diet:
1. Give up on food that harms such as smoking,
excessive fatty, fried or spicy food and processed
sugar. Good food means good mind, body and
spirit. Afterall there is a famous English saying,
you are what you eat. If you eat harmful food
your personality would be harmful and toxic.
2. Eat only food that heals your body such as
olive oil, milk, honey, fresh fruit, dates, fish etc.
If your body gets regular intake of good food it
will give you health and happiness. Ramadan is
the perfect opportunity to develop a habot of
getting your body to get used to eating healthy
food.
3. Observe more silence every day, in other
words talk less, listen more. In the month of
Ramadan contemplate more. Reflect on your
life and on the blessings of Allah as often as
possible. You will loose less energy and gain
spiritual insight.
4. Invest more time in learning and practicing
Islam. Blind followers and irrational Muslims
are useless to Allah and the humanity. It is
only through knowledge you gain real faith,
through contemplative faith you discover
Allah and through understanding you become
enlightened. These are inter-related. In the
month of Ramadan free yourself from the daily
addiction to food.

5. Try telling your wife to reduce the time

she spends in cooking but time on personal
reflection and worship of Allah. Spend more
quality time with your family. Your spouse,
children, parents and relatives are all important.
One of the best ways of increasing spirituality in
food is to share food without pretentiousness.
Invite your family for iftar but dont cook lavish
food for them and accept invitation from your
family out having any expectations of elaborate
iftar.
If you can break the habits of a lifetime and
realign your food and spirituality along the
Prophetic ideals you would be far better
Muslim than you were previously. Start small
and insha-Allah, the change will happen.

Prestige has been serving you for almost two decades and will continue to do so inshAllah.

Healthy
Ramadan
A balanced diet
Those observing the fast should have at least two
meals a day the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) and a
meal at dusk (Iftar).
During Ramadan, our food intake should be simple
and not differ too much from normal diet. It should
contain foods from all the major food groups:
- fruit and vegetables
- bread, cereals and potatoes
- meat, fish or alternatives

Foods to avoid
- deep-fried foods such as pakoras, samosas and
fried dumplings
- high-sugar and high-fat foods including sweets
such as gulab jamun, rasgulla and balushahi
- high-fat cooked foods such as parathas, oily
curries and greasy pastries

- milk and dairy foods

- foods containing fat and sugar
Complex carbohydrates are foods that help release
energy slowly during the long hours of fasting.
They are found in foods such as barley, wheat, oats,
millet, semolina, beans, lentils, wholemeal flour and
basmati rice.
Fibre-rich foods are also digested slowly and include
bran, cereals, whole wheat, grains and seeds,

Healthy alternatives

potatoes with the skin on, vegetables such as green

- baked samosas and boiled dumplings

beans, and almost all fruit, including apricots, prunes

- chapattis made without oil

and figs.

- baked or grilled meat and chicken

Foods to avoid are the fast-burning, heavily

processed foods that contain refined carbohydrates

(sugar and white flour), as well as fatty food (such

It's also worth avoiding caffeine-based drinks such
as tea, coffee and cola. Caffeine is a diuretic and
stimulates faster water loss through urination.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and a time

when Muslims across the world will fast during the hours of
daylight. Ramadan is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam.
The Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during
this month. The actual night that the Quran was revealed is a
night known as Lailut ul-Qadr (The Night of Power).
