Course Objectives:
The course introduces students to the fascinating field of modern digital communications
at a graduate/undergraduate level.
To make students familair with modern digital trasmitter and receiver mechanisms
Unit I
Elements of Digital Communication system : Elements of digital communication,
communication channels and their characteristics, mathematical models for
communication channels, recent trends in digital communication
Signal Analysis : Deterministic and random signal analysis, Band pass and low pass
signal representation, Signal space representation of waveforms
Unit II
Digital modulation schemes : Representation of digitally modulated signals,
memory less modulation methods, multidimensional signalling, Signalling schemes
with memory, CPFSK, CPM, MSK, PAM, PM, QAM
Unit III
Optimum receivers for additive white gaussian noise : Waveforms and vector
channel models, Waveforms and vector AWGN channels, Optimum detection for
vector AWGN channel
Implementation of receivers : Implementation of optimal receivers for AWGN
channels, the correlation receiver, matched filter receiver, frequency domain
interpretation of the matched filter
Detectors in recievers : The optimum detector, The maximum likelihood sequence
detector, A symbol by symbol MAP detector for signals with memory
Unit IV
Carrier synchronisation : carrier recovery and symbol synchronisation in signal
demodulation, carrier phase estimation, maximum likelihood carrier phase
estimation, phase locked loop, effect of noise on phase estimation, Decision directed
loops, Non decision directed loops
Symbol Synchronisation : Symbol timing estimation, maximum likelihood timing
estimation, non decision directed timing estimation
Unit V
Multichannel system : muti channel digital communication in AWGN channel
Multicarrier system : Multicarrier communication, single carrier versus multicarrier
modulation, capacity of non ideal linear filter channel, orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing, modulation and demodulation in OFDM system
Unit VI
Spread spectrum signals for digital communication : Model of spread spectrum
digital communication system, direct sequence spread spectrum signals, frequency
hopped spread spectrum signals, CDMA based on FHSS signals, Synchronization of
spread spectrum systems
