Two House in Torah

•Sibling Rivalry
–Gen 37:6-7 – He said to them, “Hear, if you please, this dream
which I dreamt: Behold! – we were binding sheaves in the middle
of the field, when, behold! – my sheaf arose and also remained
standing; then behold! – your sheaves gathered around and bowed
down to my sheaf.”
–Gen 37:18 – They saw him afar; and when he had not yet
approached them they conspired against him to kill him.
–Gen 37:26-27 – Judah said to his brothers, “What gain will there
be if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let us ell
him to the Ishmaelites…”

•Sibling Reconciliation
–Gen 44:33 – Now, therefore, please let your servant remain
instead of the youth as a servant to my lord, and let the youth go
up with his brothers.
–Gen 45:4-5 – …”I am Joseph your brother – it is me, whom you
sold into Egypt. And now, be not distressed, nor reproach
yourselves for having sold me here…”
•Joseph had prophetic dreams of being a ruler amongst his
brothers and subsequently became viceroy in Egypt.
•Judah became a leader amongst his brothers by asserting
himself to sell Joseph into Egypt and latter offering himself in
place of Benjamin.

•The leadership qualities displayed in Judah and Joseph would also be

displayed in their offspring.
•The 12 Spies
–Good Report from Caleb and Joshua
–Num 13:6 – For the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
–Num 13:8 - For the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.
–Num 13:16 – …Moses called Hoshea son of Nun “Joshua.”
–Num 14:30 – Doubtless ye shall not come into the land,
concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb
the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

•Jacob’s Blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh (Joseph’s children)

–Gen 48:14-19 – But Israel extended his right hand and laid it on
Ephraim’s head though he was the younger…May the angel who
redeems me from all evil bless the lads, and may my name be
declared upon them, and the names of my forefathers Abraham
and Isaac, and may they proliferate abundantly like fish within the
land. Joseph saw that his father was placing his right hand on
Ephraim’s head…But his fathered refused, saying, “I know my
son, I know; he too will become a people, and he too will become
great; yet his younger brother shall become greater than he, and
his offspring[‘s fame] will fill the nations.”
•KJV reads – and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
•Hebew – Melo HaGoyim (fullness of the Gentiles)

•A Tale of Two Kings for the end of days???
–Gen 49:1 – Then Jacob called for his sons and said, “Assemble
yourselves and I will tell you what will befall you in the End of
Days.”
•Jacob’s Blessing of Judah
–Gen 49:8-10 – Judah … your father’s sons will prostrate
themselves to you. A lion cub is Judah; from the prey, my son,
you elevated yourself…The scepter shall not depart from Judah
nor a scholar from among his descendants until Shiloh arrives and
his will be an assemblage of nations.
•The numerical value of Shiloh is the same as Moses thus
Rabbinical teaching tells us that this is a reference to the Messiah.
–The above verse establishes a kingship for the tribe of Judah and
that a Messiah would descend from Judah (i.e. Messiah son of
David)

•Jacob’s Blessing of Joseph
–Gen 49:22,24,26 – A charming son is Joseph…from there, he
shepherded the stone of Israel…Let them be upon Joseph’s head
and upon the head of the exile from his brothers.
•KJV reads – from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:
•Moses’ Blessing of Joseph
–Deut 33:16-17 – …may this blessing rest upon Joseph’s head,
and upon the crown of him who was separated from his brothers.
A sovereignty is his ox-like one – majesty is his…
•The underlined and purple highlighted phrase in both verses is the
exact same phrase in Hebrew “v’lekakod nezir echan”
•We can see from the above verses that Joseph was also given a
kingship from the tribe of Joseph and possibly also a messiah from
Joseph (i.e. Messiah son of Joseph)

•The Birth of Joseph

–Gen 30:24 – So she called his name Joseph, saying, “May
HaShem add on for me another son.”
•The immediate fulfillment of this was seen through Joseph’s
younger brother Benjamin a few years later. However this is also
understood to be a prophecy concerning Messiah son of Joseph (i.e.
the Messiah son of Joseph will be the son of the right hand
(Benjamin) to the Messiah son of David).
•The book Mashiach by Jacob Schochet pg. 93-94 – Mashiach ben
Yossef…He will come first, before the final redeemer, and later will
serve as his viceroy.

•Continued…
–The book Mashiach by Jacob Schochet pg. 97 - …she called his
name “Yossef, saying ‘yossef Hashem – may G-d add to me ben
acher (lit., another son), i.e., ben acharono shel olam – one who
will be at the end of the world’s time,’ from which it follows the
‘meshu’ach milchamah – one anointed for battle’ will descend
from Joseph”

•Joshua and the prophecy to fight Amalek

–Ex 17:14,16 – HaShem said to Moses, “Write this as a
remembrance in the Book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I
shall surely erase the memory of Amalek from under the
heavens.”…HaShem maintains a war against Amalek, from
generation to generation.
•The book Mashiach by Jacob Schochet pg. 96 (note 7) – Mashiach
ben Yossef’s battle against Edom is analogous to, and the
culmination of, Israel’s first battle against Edom (Amalek) after the
exodus from Egypt (Exodus 17:5ff.). In that first battle, the Jewish
army was led by Joshua – who is also of the tribe of Ephraim, and
(according to some) this Mashiach’s ancestor…

•Conclusion
–Deut 30:3 – Then HaShem, your God, will bring back your
captivity and have mercy upon you, and He will gather you in
form all the peoples to which HaShem, your God, has scattered
you.
–Jeroboam served Solomon (1 Kings 11:26,28) and eventually
lead a revolt against Solomon’s son Rehoboam resulting in the
split of the kingdom and fulfilling the Torah’s prophecy of
kingship for both Judah and Joseph. It may be that as the
kingdom fell apart, so will it be put back together. The Mashiach
ben Yoseph (King of Israel) and Mashiach ben David (King of
Judah) reuniting the tribes of Israel to culminate the final
redemption.
