Introduction to Move to Amend Interfaith Caucus

Formed in September 2009, Move to Amend is a coalition of hundreds of

organizations and hundreds of thousands of individuals committed to social and
economic justice, ending corporate rule, and building a vibrant, real democracy that
is genuinely accountable to We the People, not corporate interests. We are calling
for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to unequivocally state that:
-

Inalienable Constitutional rights belong only to human beings, and

Money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment, and can be
regulated in political campaigns.
-

Many of us have long been active in a multitude of struggles to counter the negative
impacts that global corporations, in their unwavering search for greater profits at any
cost, have been imposing on our politics, elections, education, environment, health,
immigration, and many other areas.
Since the beginning of Move to Amend in 2009, we have been working to amend the
Constitution from a secular, legal, and structural perspective. Move to Amend
supporters who are members of faith, spiritual, and ethical communities see the
intersection of the cause to end corporate rule and their beliefs that a higher power
endows only living beings with inherent and inalienable rights. Love of money and
power interfere with the observance of our respective values, beliefs, creeds and other
statements of faith or ethics.
The greatest expression of love of money and power is found in the national and
global actions of large corporations. Corporations possessing courtcreated
constitutional rights as singular persons and the parallel courtcreated access to use
money as speech, seek to maximize shareholder profit above all other goals. In so
doing they cause great damage to society and our planet.
In a workshop as part of the second Democracy Convention in Madison, WI, in August
of 2013, 29 individuals representing a variety of different faith and ethical communities
began identifying areas of common values that they all felt were impacted by corporate
actions. The three values that all agreed on constitute a basis for building a
faith/ethically based coalition within MTA.

They are:
-

Love Thy Neighbor,

Preference and Care for the Poor, and

- The

Stewardship of Creation (or the Earth and all its beings)

These values will surely be expanded as we proceed. We invite all People of Faith and
Ethical communities to join together to express these values and beliefs through action,
to form or join Move to Amend affiliates and to focus our efforts on widening the
coalition. As we reach out to other communities at the local, state and national levels
and grow the coalition to millions of people, we could have the potential to become the
most influential force in this movement.
