Using first conditional


The first conditional is used to talk about things that are possible in the present or the future things
which may happen.
A first conditional sentence consists of two clauses, an if clause and a main clause.
If clause

e.g. If you study hard,


simple present tense

Main clause

you will pass the exam.


simple future tense

The sentence means that it is possible that you will study hard and you will pass the exam.

If the if clause comes first, a comma is used. If the if clause comes second, there is no need for a
comma. For example, You will pass the exam if you study hard.

Learning English through Short Stories
I. What is a short story?
A short story generally involves a limited number of characters and scenes, deals with a short period of time, and
uses only the details for understanding the storys situation.

II. The structure of a short story


The structure of a short story is divided into three main parts: opening 1, climax 2 and ending 3 / twists 4.

1. Opening:
The start of the story, which introduces the protagonist 5 and the setting(s)

2. Climax:
The turning point or the most exciting part of the story

3. Ending / Twists (sudden unexpected endings to stories):


The end of the story, which may provide a resolution 6, or a twist to surprise readers

III. The elements of a short story


Like any type of stories, a short story contains the following elements: theme 7, setting 8, context 9 and characters 10.

1. Theme:
A short story may contain one or more than one themes, which express the main idea of the story, e.g.
friendship, loyalty, family values, love, etc.

2. Setting:
It is the places or surroundings where the story takes place.

3. Context:
It is the events or the characters actions that make up the story.

4. Characters:
The characters can be real people or fictional people, animals, etc.
