Introduction
Dear reader, thanks for picking up this issue of Solitary Thelema
Magazine, the official newsletter of Thelema for the Solitary Practitioner
(http://facebook.com/solitarythelema) . In this magazine are the
collected works of your fellow travelers who have submitted creative
work throughout the five years of our existence as an 'unlodge of
solitaries'. Hopefully, if your voice isn't here already, we will hear it in a
subsequent issue of Solitary Thelema Magazine.
93,
Soror Harmony Pax, Will
Linden, and most importantly, you, the reader.

Also the mantras and spells; the obeah and the wanga; the work of
the wand and the work of the sword : these he shall learn and
teach. He must teach. I:37-38.
My interpretation of this is that since Crowley was commanded to
create a new Curriculum, then we as Thelemites have an obligation to
study that Curriculum1, and that is what I have done.
And so that takes us to the first grade, Student; but first I want to
digress:
The Mystical and Magical System of the AA, by James
Eshelman has been an incredible aid to me in working my way through
the Crowley Curriculum. Before you accuse me of depending too much
on the work of someone who is NOT Aleister Crowley, let me add that I
also went back and checked Eshelmans instructions against the original
Crowley documents: One Star in Sight, Liber Collegii Sancti, Liber
Graduum Montis Abiegni and Literature Recommended to Aspirants.
I did not find any omissions!
And now, finally, back to the Student grade!
Checking http://www.outercol.org/ it is not hard to click the link to
the Curriculum where we find:
want over 400 pages of sarcastic book reviews. I just wanted straightforward magical instruction, which I eventually found in The Equinox,
alongside fiction, poetry, drama, even sheet music and those darn book
reviews.
What follows are my first impressions of these, I hope they may be
of at least limited value to some of you.
The Book of Abramelin, by Abraham Von Worms (the Dehn/Goth
edition): Like many others, I am thrilled that a modern translation has
finally appeared. It is too timely and too important to not be made
available. The appearance of this book is much more than just praiseworthy; just thinking about it, I feel a sort of spiritual earthquake
occurring.
Combining this book with Liber VIII: The Ritual Proper for the
Invocation of Augoeides and Liber Samekh certainly could lead to
the Knowledge and Communication of the Holy Guardian Angel ... one
hopes!
The Goetia: Reading this was, of course, nothing new. I have much
experience with the Goetia; some, but not all, of that experience
impacting the material world.
Ive decided to try again, utilizing a spirit Ive not worked with
before.
The desire, of course, being to have the time to actually do what
Im supposed to be doing.
Transcendental Magic, by Eliphas Levi: This is a much better book
than The Key of the Mysteries. I think, by the time of Key, that Levi was
6
under fire for some of the things hed said before; and was now trying to
back pedal.
Transcendental Magic could have moved on a little more quickly
though.
Compared to more modern authors, this is like reading a book on
mythology. I fail to see how it influenced Crowley.
I have to laugh at Levis constant use of the term magnetic. He
also seems fond of the word analogy. (ed. Magnetic is a 19th century
term for magical, and it was also used by Bardon, Randolph etc.)
It must be AE Waites translation but this is one of the most
difficult books to get through I tackled since beginning this journal. Ick!
The word turgid comes to mind.
As I get into the Ritual section, it is much easier to read,
although chapter four reads like superstition.
Konx Om Pax, by Aleister Crowley: Empty Headed Athenians
laments the frustration of trying to teach anything to those with a herd
animal mentality.
The Wake World is obviously about the relationship between the
aspirant and the Holy Guardian Angel. Whenever you see Adonai in
Aleister Crowleys writings, he is referencing the Angel. This is also a
Qabalistic journey. I had earlier written that it was a Qabalistic/Tarot
journey up the Tree of Life, and that it read like a sort of Alice in
Wonderland kind of story.
Ali Sloper supposedly reflects on the Jones-Crowley
collaboration as they put together the AA. But most of it reads like
7
some kind of inside joke. You may find a few gems in it, but Im not
sure its worth the effort.
Thien Tao This seems to be both a parody, and a treatise on the
equilibrium of all things.
The Stone of Abiegnus This reads like a debate among
different types of atheists and agnostics. I am most drawn to the final
verse, The Poet.
The Book of Lies, by Aleister Crowley: I know enough about
Qabalah, Tarot, Astrology and Eastern Thought to understand most of
what Crowley is saying here. But is he saying anything new, or is he
trying to prove how clever he is?
It becomes more of a game of Oh, I know what hes talking about
now, and less a matter of Oh, he just said something utterly brilliant
that Ive never heard of before.
Anyone coming to Konx Om Pax and The Book of Lies for magical
instruction is going to be disappointed. There is nothing practical here;
there is nothing that someone can actually use (with very few
exceptions).
I would be much more impressed by direct, simple instructions,
uncluttered by cuteness; offering actual information that a student can
use.
But that will, of course, come later.
777, by Aleister Crowley: This is just an incredible cross reference.
I can tell that it will be handy for all kinds of things, such as charting the
gods names for an Egyptian pentagram ritual.
8
feels like its reaching out to me and then suddenly it all makes sense
to me in a way that reaches far deeper than the reasoning faculty of my
surface brain. This is really quite incredible. I havent felt this way for a
very long time.
The Equinox I(1)2: An Account of AA I can see why
Crowley liked this, why he saw great promise in this; why he sought for
such a thing it has the potential to be very inspirational.
Liber Libr I have always liked this; it is a lovely piece of
writing. Its just wonderful, and needs to be constantly reread.
Liber E vel Exercitiorum This is excellent. This is what Ive
been waiting for. What took him so long? Its interesting that we begin
with Yoga rather than Magick. At least he mentions Tarot decks. This is
something to figuratively sink our teeth into!
The Chymical Jousting of Brother Perardula I can tell this is
well-written, but I must learn more alchemy to fully appreciate it.
The Soldier and the Hunchback: ! and ? This is a great piece of
analytical writing, and great advice to the aspirant: have healthy
skepticism and have all facts prove themselves, but dont be silly!
The Temple of Solomon the King I had read this introduction
before. I really really enjoy this. The things this intro discusses, and the
way it discusses them is just perfect. It is a magnum opus all by itself.
John St. John I could wish that Crowley spent less time talking
2In order to save space, only Equinox items that are part of the Crowley Curriculum will
be reviewed.
10
about his diet and more time talking and doing the actual work.
Having had some exposure to heightened states of consciousness, I
understand the euphoria of the last couple days of this working.
The Equinox I(2): Liber O vel Manus et Sagitt The simplicity
and directness of this is just wonderful. This is what Ive been waiting
for.
A Handbook of Geomancy There are apparently blinds in these
instructions.
A Note on Genesis (Allen Bennett) This is absolutely quite
brilliant, but should be considered as for a very advanced student.
Postcards to Probationers These are ingenious little
encapsulations, and worth returning to time and again ... though I
daresay some are a bit long to fit on a postcard.
The Temple of Solomon the King This installment was good.
But it would have been better to give synopses of the rituals, including
the part where actual instruction was imparted; plus he completely
overlooked the Knowledge Lectures. Instead, my interest is drawn to
what Crowley studied before joining the Golden Dawn: Alchemy, The
Spritual Guide, The Cherubic Wanderer, The Arbatel, The Seven
Mysterious Orisons, Key of Solomon and other grimoires, Qabalah, The
Book of Concealed Mystery, Knorr von Rosenroth, and The Book of the
Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage.
The Equinox I(3): Graduum Montis Abiegni the syllabus of the
Grades. All the vague allusions to things the reader of The Equinox has
not seen serve no purpose whatsoever.
11
Aha! I know a lot of people like this; but really Crowleys time
would have been better spent writing straight forward instructions, rather
than this contrived allegory ... and it goes on and on and on.
The Temple of Solomon the King This is really quite dry, and
the installment in The Equinox I(1) was so promising ... Ive gotten to
the end of this, and Im a little bit more kindly disposed about this
installment.
I really dont see where this wordy mess
has much to offer. It seems hard to read these lines with much emotion.
The Equinox I(4): Liber Jugorum Speech, Action, Thought! I
understand the need for self-control but these steps seem a little extreme.
Someone using these practices today could very well get locked up.
Things have changed since 1910.
Liber A vel Armorum To create these according to instruction,
one would need, at any length, some very serious blacksmithing skills.
The Temple of Solomon the King An interesting section, but I
had already read much on Yoga, written on it too, so that much of this
was repetition ... I find John St. John and this installment of The
Temple of Solomon the King to be quite interesting. I, too, have
encountered atmospherics. This is an interesting package en toto.
The High History of Good Sir Palamedes ... Its all about the
journey. This also relates to the Angel. We search and search for him/her,
but the Angel is right there within us 3 ... I think this really is one of
Crowleys better pieces.
3This was written before I read Crowleys final thoughts on the process in Magick
Without Tears.
12
4I maintain that Aleister Crowley was the stenographer of The Book of the Law. But all
the other Holy Books are merely very personal automatic writing, and are not in the
same class with The Book of the Law, and are hard to decipher without Crowleys own
commentary.

magical ritual, but it must be done that way, and not just as a religious
service.
The Voice of the Silence/The Two Paths/The Seven Portals
Crowleys comments on Blavatsky: from Crowleys end, if youve
already read everything else he wrote on Yoga, this is nothing new. From
Blavatskys end: She was willing to make things up way too much!
Blavatsky was either doing automatic writing or she was on some sort of
hyper-creative overdrive! 6
If nothing else, I hope youre saying to yourselves, Well, I can do
better than this, and that youll do just that.
I know I seemed impatient with Crowley, and I was. I wanted
hardcore magical instruction, and didnt feel I was getting it until I
tackled the much-diluted Equinox.
You might be wondering, that if I was so unhappy with what I was
reading, why did I stick with the Curriculum. My only answer can be
that I had a calling and that I had the Certainty of Nuit7 that I must tackle
this work. Once I started The Work my doubts and concerns ceased. I
just knew that I had to do it, I knew it had to be done.
6I freely admit that, for works not covered in this section, I was content to read the
synopses from Mr. Eshelmans book.

that seeing the Brady Bunch means two things, that the BB is my deep
unconscious symbol of mundanity, normality, the family circle as I grew
up with the concept of, and that it got that way because I spent too much
of my time watching pop culture tv in the 60s. What a waste of a good
adolescence. Not my fault, parents are supposed to guide and teach
kids. Messed up my expectations too. At least now I know I gotta get a
broader definition and classical version of mundanity going. But it just
goes to show you that, while your life experiences are your gnosis,
practically any of your life experiences can end up being an important
part of your own personal gnosis.
Prior to this event, and after beginning to read diligently thru 418
for some time, I started seeing 418s following me around all over town,
wherever I went. 418 on license plates (the most visible when driving),
418s on the clock (seems I still manage to somehow intuitively or
strangely otherwise look at the clock when its 4:18 in the afternoon)
whether at home or on the computer at work or on the phone display at
work or anywhere and am usually not awake at 4:18 in the blessed a.m.
One of these 418s made itself all too clear at one point while I
was trying to ignore all this 418 activity. I had parked downtown to go
to the civic center for something, and was a block or so away and could
not see the front of the civic center from where I parked. As I rounded
the corner toward the front of the civic center where they have the huge
electronic word display of recent events and ticket information, a
marquee-I guess its still called- there displayed on the largest clock in
town, was the time. 4:18. Well, I couldnt very well ignore that large
and intrusive message, could I.
Liber 418 is Crowleys only liber which gave me such a personal
gnosis-interactive feedback self-referential reaction when read before
falling into the hypnogogic state just before sleep. Why, is not for me to
24
ask, but I do. Suffice it to say, life is not normal when in bed with
Crowley .

Allie Crow
Allie Crow, Allie Crow;
What were you told so long ago?
Were you afraid at every word?
Did you shudder at what you heard?
Three hours time was all it took
As you wrote down that famous book.
When wars began and cities fell,
Was it the work of Nuits spell?
Aiwaz words, spoken clear and precise, did speak of
Nuits command, as a word to the wise, did tell of
Hadits potential, as infinite of size, did harbinger
Ra-Hoor-Khuit, always master of dice, did seize the old on
fling it far, fling it fast,
til it became a part of the past.
Old men wonder what revealed their lies,
as the world flounders and old faiths die.
Wars and destruction: chaos rains down
as from the ruins the Babe cries for his crown!

+ The conjuration was done one for each Good Angel: czns, ToTt, Sias,
fmnd
* Names used were:
ORO-IBAH-AOZPI
BATAIVAH
6 Seniors of Air: HIPOTGA (Saturn), AAOZAIF (Jupiter), HABIORO (Mars),
AHAOZPI (Venus), AVTOTAR (Mercury), HTMORDA (Luna)
Calvary Cross Angels: IDIOGO, Ardza
------------------------------------------------Given that this was the 2nd time I was performing this, and my
condition is a rather chronic one, I added a single-letter from the
vertical-line of the Calvary Cross for each Good Angel. So the names
called were:
czons
ToiTt
Sigas
fmond
The same technique can be applied to the previous ritual posted or to
any other sub-quadrant of the other watchtowers.
This is an alternate version of a Healing ritual I wrote sometime back. I
did this for a number of reasons:
31
1) The first version was a success. However, after a week or so, the
swelling in my foot returned. Whilst the pain was almost completely
gone and remains so, my other respiratory symptoms returned. I could
have repeated the ritual again (as was even suggest but the Tablet of
Union spirit EHNB), however I decided to try something different.
2) There are different variations of the uses of the Angels of the various
sub-quadrants. In the hierarchy posted by Sharash on
http://hermetic.com/enochia/enochian_hierarchy.html , it indicated
that the Water sub-quadrants were associated with Medicine and the
healing of disease, in the original Dee material, it indicated that the AIR
of AIR subquadrant was used. I have done 2 versions and over the next
week, I shall compare and contrast the differences between both.
3) I should point out that I had done this particular version of the ritual
(AIR of AIR) before the previous ritual I had posted, but my results were
less than satisfactory. I am repeating it but with a difference of adding a
letter from the vertical line of the Calvary Cross (Have indicated at the
bottom of the ritual).
