I am currently a Data Scientist in the financial industry working on applying machine learning and data
mining techniques to credit card fraud prevention. I'm interested in statistics, mathematics, machine learning
(theoretical and applied), and related problems in fraud prevention, credit risk, homeland security, and
healthcare.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Data Scientist
Brighterion, Inc. - San Francisco, CA - January 2014 to Present
Responsibilities
- Monitored our fraud detection/prediction models for our major clients such as MasterCard, alerting them of
major shifts in behaviors and trends.
- Developed rule-generation systems to supplement fraud models.
- Prototyped (in Python) and implemented (in Java) various machine learning algorithms such as neural
networks, decision trees, random forests, and boosting.
- Presented results to our clients, informed them of new fraud trends, decline strategies by various banks, and
other behaviors which could affect model performance.
Accomplishments
- I re-built our existing rules-creation system, allowing it to be faster, more accurate, and to have it present
results in a more intuitive format.
- Implemented machine learning algorithms (decision trees, boosting, multi-layer neural networks) in Java to
add to our server-side machine-learning tools.
- Re-developed some of our tools in Java which were originally lengthy SQL/bash scripts, greatly simplifying
our data processing pipelines.
- Interfacing with Oracle databases using the Java JDBC, I developed server-side code which processed large
tables, trained machine learning models, and displayed visualizations and graphics of model performance.
Skills Used
My work involves a fair amount of Java programming, SQL/bash scripting, and research using Python and
its associated ML/data analysis libraries and tools, such as Scikit-Learn, Pandas, and Numpy. I have also
demoed products to our clients, presented our models to business leaders, and helped devise fraud prevention
strategies.

Undergraduate Researcher
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

- Berkeley, CA - February 2012 to December 2013

Responsibilities
Analyzed data collected from the LUX dark matter detector located in Lead, South Dakota. Constructed
algorithms related to position reconstruction and conducted simulations.
Accomplishments
I studied the effect that a "ripple effect" on a liquid surface would have on light being refracted through it. I
also improved our position reconstruction algorithms and gave limits on errors based on simulated data. In

addition, I studied how hypothetical "WIMP" particles would interact with various materials through collisions,
as part of an effort to better postulate a complete set of experiments that would be necessary to rule out a
majority of WIMP model parameters.
Skills Used
I used Matlab and Python extensively in my work, but it also required knowledge of C++ and a data analysis
framework known as ROOT which was developed at CERN.

San Diego Mesa College - San Diego, CA - August 2009 to June 2011
Responsibilities
Tutored students in every math and physics class offered at the school (lower division since it was a two year
college).
Accomplishments
Helped many students succeed in their study of mathematics and the physical sciences.
