EXCITING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES


The New-Born Screening for Child Survival Sickle Cell Disease Project (NBS) has received funding from
Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) to establish a New-Born Screening programme (NBS) to
identify children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) at birth. The NBS programme has exciting employment
opportunities for highly motivated and result-driven professionals interested in working in the health sector.
The duty station for all these positions is Dar es Salaam.
LABORATORY TECHNICIANS (3 POSTS)
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the job holder is responsible for processing of the laboratory
samples received and ensuring they meet the set criteria.
Specific Responsibilities

Performs daily QC runs on all laboratory tests/procedures.

Performs testing of all relevant tests for the projects

Documentation of daily operation, recalibration, preventive maintenance service and repair of the
machines/analyzers in the operational, reagent, calibration, maintenance and corrective action logs

Troubleshoot any technical faults of the machine using operator's guide manual and report to the
laboratory supervisor in case the problem persists

Analyze samples/panels received for external quality control program and submit them within deadline

Checking and recording all the laboratory results before validation/verification by a laboratory
supervisor/lab director or designee

Archive all the source documents after testing in the appropriate files

Prepare summary reports of the machines/analyzers at the end of every month

Ensures proper repository of specimens as per study protocol

Responsible for the daily operation and handling of all data queries, all upgrades and exporting
regarding the LDMS.

Receives reagents, test kits, controls, calibrators stored for testing

Ensures proper storage of perishable supplies in the storage room

Documentation such as temperature monitoring charts, maintenance logs of freezers/fridges

Ensures proper repository of specimens as per study protocol

Responsible for the daily operation and handling of all data queries, all upgrades and exporting
regarding the LDMS.

Receives, registers, records and logs in specimens in lab registers/computer program.

Ensures specimen rejection criteria are followed

Key Qualifications

A minimum degree in BSc in Medical Laboratory or equivalent

A minimum of Two (2) years working experience in Clinical laboratory

Knowledge of current laboratory facilities and best practices in lab operations, methods, equipment,
materials and ability to perform standardized biological, chemical, and microbiological examinations
independently.

Advanced understanding of Good Clinical Laboratory Practise (GCLPs), regulatory/ accreditation


agency requirements and lab based Quality Management System (QMS).

Excellent Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications.

Good communicator with patients, co-workers, junior and senior staff.

DATA ENTRY CLERK (4 POSTS)


Reporting to the Data Manager, the position holder will be responsible for error free input of gathered data
into the set database
Specific Responsibilities

CRFs checking for completeness and accuracy.

Record any incompleteness and inaccuracies in the data query register

Prepares source data for computer entry by compiling and sorting information; establishing entry
priorities

Enters data by inputting alphabetic and numeric information on keyboard or optical scanner according
to screen format

Maintains data entry requirements by following data program techniques and procedures

Maintain a Data query register that lists any blanks, inaccuracies, or discrepancies on forms.

Present the query register to Data Manager for action.

Orderly file all the CRF and safely and securely store them in filing cabinet after entry everyday

Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed

Any other duties that might be assigned by the Data Manager

Key Qualifications

A prospective candidate for the post should possess a minimum Diploma of Secretarial Work OR
Proven 5 Years experience as a Data Entry Clerk in a research environment
A Diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent from a recognized institution
OR Bachelors of Sociology would be an added advantage.
Minimum typing speed of 35wppm.

Relevant work experience

This post requires a candidate with at least 3 year experience

INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN (1 POST)


Reporting to the ICT Manager, the position holder will be responsible to ensure the NBS ICT systems and
services are operating at a level that supports the NBS objectives
Specific Responsibilities

Perform repairs and planned preventative maintenance on NBS systems and services

Maintain and update the equipment inventory (including stored faulty equipment) by adding
information on the status of equipment, maintenance history, where known, routine
maintenance requirements and expected timing of replacement of all NBS ICT equipment.

Liaise with suppliers and or the procurement unit on the supply of ICT equipment.

Maintain the following critical NBS systems


o

Email system

Document storage and retrieval system

Issue Tracking system

Data management system

Lab information system

All office and clinic workstations

Backend server hardware.

Training of staff on the use of NBS ICT.

Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for the IT department.

Any other duties that might be assigned by the IT Manager

Key Qualifications

Diploma in Computer Science or other related field.

Bachelors Degree or Masters in Computer Science or related field

Other professional ICT certifications are an added advantage.

Managing windows workstations

Managing linux servers.

MEDICAL OFFICER (3 POSTS)

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, the Medical Officer is responsible for clinical care to SCD patients
and clinical data collection.
Specific Responsibilities
Health Care:

Supervise all activities pertaining to NBS at the allotted site

Enable the Nursing Officer in the labour wards to conduct NBS successfully by ensuring that all
required consumables are present

Countercheck with the Nursing Officer in charge that activities are continuing and tackle any
hindrances to NBS

Provide healthcare to SCD patients at outpatient clinic and for inpatient in wards.

Attend departmental clinical meetings and presentations.

Presentations of summary of patients admitted in the ward during the week.

Organizing post clinic team meetings and facilitating them in absence of the CC

Giving daily or weekly report to the CC and report on progress and barriers faced during our daily
activities.

To attend patients calls from clinical helpline.

Write and maintain duty rosters of clinical staff for daily rotation and through weekends and public
holidays and for special duties at the clinic.

Also monitors the clinical inventory of furniture and equipment at the site and immediately report
on the breakage or loss

Clinical Data collection:

Participate in clinical surveillance of screened neonates which involves filling in case report forms
(CRF) with clinical and laboratory information, specimen collection and storage.

Maintain program log books, files and review completed patient forms.

Calling patients who are lost to follow up and performing verbal autopsy from families for patients
who have died.

Schedule and attend regular program meetings to discuss progress and problems with other
members and gives ideas on how to improve systems of data collection, participants care and
follow up.

Teaching and training

Provide continuing medical education (CME) to program, and hospital staff.

Provide support for academic and hospital activities e.g. clinical examinations.

In bringing about public awareness about the sickle cell disease, you will be expected to be
engaged in public awareness campaigns.

Key Qualifications

Degree in Doctor of Medicine.

Other professional certifications in areas of medicine and public health are an advantage.

Minimum of One (1) Year Clinical experience

Experience in a research setting is highly desirable

NURSING OFFICER (1 POST)


Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, the Nurse Officer is responsible for clinical care to SCD patients and
clinical data collection.
Specific Responsibilities

Give health education to SCD patients , parents and guardians


Perform pretest counseling to SCD patients , parents and guardians
Supervising and assisting mothers in labour,
Participate in DBS collection and storage for NBS screening
Participate in filing of NBS CRF s
Perform post test counseling to SCD patients , parents and guardians
Supervise proper vital sign measurements and recording for SCD patients
Supervise proper anthropometric and measurement recording for SCD patients
Organization of Outpatient clinics for SCD patients
Participate in major ward rounds and ensure all orders by the doctors are executed
Attend clinical meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Key Qualification(s)

Degree in Nursing, Midwifery or relevant qualification(s)
