GILGIT - BALTISTAN
HISTORY & PEOPLE
The region has a rich history and
was previously ruled by several
small states, like Hunza, Gilgit,
Punial, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar
and Khaplu. The part of the
region has been governed under
Kashmir as well. It was
commonly believed that people
of Hunza were descendants of
the Greeks who came as the
soldiers of Alexander; however,
recent research says that most
of the population belongs to
various aboriginal people and are
the descendants of Indo-Iranian
tribes.
LANGUAGE & RELIGION
The population consists of many
diverse linguistic, ethnic and
religious groups. The most
famous languages of the region
