Introduction
Thoughoftenconflatedwithcolonialismmoregenerally,settlercolonialismisadistinctimperialformation.Bothcolonialism
andsettlercolonialismarepremisedonexogenousdomination,butonlysettercolonialismseekstoreplacetheoriginal
populationofthecolonizedterritorywithanewsocietyofsettlers(usuallyfromthecolonialmetropole).Thisnewsocietyneeds
land,andsosettlercolonialismdependsprimarilyonaccesstoterritory.Thisisachievedbyvariousmeans,eitherthrough
treatieswithindigenousinhabitantsorsimplybytakingpossession.Britain,forexample,implementedthedoctrineofterra
nullius(landbelongingtonoone)toclaimsovereigntyoverAustralia.Theentirecontinentwastherebydeclaredlegally
uninhabited,despitemillenniaofAboriginaloccupation.Inthelate1980s,duringtheheydayofpostcolonialtheory,some
scholarsstartedtocriticizewidespread,generalizeduseofthetermpostcolonialawordtheyconsideredproblematic.They
arguedthatinasettlersocietylikeAustraliaortheUnitedStates,colonialismcouldnotbedescribedortheorizedinthepast
tensetherewasnopostcolonial.Intheseplaces,thestatemaintainedacolonialrelationshipwiththeindigenouspeoples
(andwascomplicitintheirongoingdispossession).Followingtheseinitialcritiques,scholarsinanthropologyandrelated
disciplines(particularlyIndigenousstudies)setaboutanalyticallydisentanglingsettlercolonialismfromcolonialismwhile
developingnew,dedicatedtheoreticalframeworksforsettlercolonialstudies.Eventually,settlercolonialstudiesemergedasa
distinctfieldofscholarlyinquiry.Anincreasinglyexpansiveliteraturenowfocusesontheideological,structural,discursive,
social,andpoliticalparticularitiesofsettlerstates.Asthisworkemphasizes,settlercolonialismispremisedonoccupationand
theeliminationofthenativepopulation,whilecolonialismisprimarilyaboutconquest.Intheoftcitedwordsofoneinfluential
scholar,settlercolonialismisastructureratherthananevent(seeWolfe1999,citedunderGeneralOverview).Inthissense,
settlercolonialismdoesnotreallyeverend.Thisinsighthasshapednewtheorizingofpoliticaltemporalitiesandtheirrolein
projectsofdomination.Astheseworksindicate,settlercolonialtheoryisincreasinglymadeuseofbyanthropologistsworking
outsideofsettlercolonialcontexts.Indeed,settlercolonialanalysisdrawsutilityfromidentifyingconnectionsamongotherwise
disparateseemingexperiencesofdispossession(seeOtherSettlerColonies).Moreover,sincethestudyofsettlementisthe
studyofanongoingphenomenon,itincludesselfreflexivityaboutracism,capitalism,andthenormsofacademicknowledge.
Ananthropologicalapproachtosettlercolonialismmightbedefinedbyattentiontothepoliticsofknowledgeproductionin
anthropology.Alliancewithindigenouspeoplesandattentionto(andindeedprioritizationof)indigenousscholarshipand
experienceiscentraltothisfield.Anoteonterminology:thereisnowidespreadconsensusregardingthecapitalizationofthe
wordIndigenous.Usagevariesdependingoncontextandinvolvesimportantculturalandpoliticalconsiderations.Forthe
purposesofthisarticle,IwillcapitalizeIndigenouswhenusingitaspartofapropernameofapeople(e.g.,Indigenous
