Heat Pump
Sizes 024, 036, 048, and 060

The 38EYX 50 Hertz Outdoor

Sections of Split-System Heat Pumps
are designed for quiet, reliable heating
during the winter and cooling during
the summer with Puron refrigerant.
These heat pump systems provide
economy of operation through energy
conservation when used with
components designated by the
manufacturer. The 38EYX recovers
heat for indoor comfort from outdoor
air during the heating season and, by
automatically reversing the
refrigerant system, remove indoor
heat and excess humidity during the
cooling season.

AVAILABLE OPTIONS
Electrical Range The 024 size unit
is available in 230V, single phase. The
036, 048, and 060 sizes are 400V,
three phase.
Size Range The 38EYX is
available in nominal sizes 024, 036,
048, and 060 to meet the needs of
residential and light commercial
applications.
Puron, the environmentally sound
refrigerantThe 38EYX uses Puron,
the environmentally sound refrigerant
that provides homeowners with
additional peace of mind because
Puron has zero ozone-depletion
potential.
In addition, thanks to the performance
advantage of Puron, the 38EYX is
extremely efficient. Maximum
performance and efficiency are made
possible through the use of the FX4C
fan coils, which are custom made for
Puron applications.

Form 38EYX-C3PD

Puron refrigerant also protects

homeowners against the future cost of
service from the potentially increased
cost of servicing units using R-22 as it
is phased out.
Compressor The 38EYX features a
scroll compressor. These compressors
are specially designed for Puron
applications, with its thicker shell and
an anti-reverse rotation device in scroll
compressors for superior reliability and
quiet operation. In addition, each
compressor is mounted on rubber
isolators for additional sound reduction.
For improved serviceability, all models
are equipped with a compressor
terminal plug. Continuous operation is
approved down to 34C in the heating
mode and down to 13C in the cooling
mode.
Built-in-Reliability Components
Includes a suction-tube accumulator
that reduces the amount of liquid
refrigerant that reaches the
compressor; high pressure switch to
prevent excessive pressure build-up;
low-pressure switch to stop the
compressor if refrigerant charge is
lost; crankcase heater on 036-060 units
to keep compressor oil warm and free
of refrigerant for maximum lubricity;
internal compressor relief valve for
high-pressure protection.
3-Phase Monitor Board Control
board that monitors the electrical

phase and prevents compressor

operation if wired incorrectly.
Discharge Silencer Minimizes low
frequency sound and pressure
pulsation generated by compressor
discharge gas.
Defrost Control Board
Incorporates a defrost relay, defrost
timer, and low-voltage terminations.
The defrost control is a time and
temperature initiation/termination
control which includes 4 fieldselectable (DIP switch) time periods of
30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The
control includes built-in 5-minute
compressor delay for short cycle
protection. This control also includes a
field-selectable (DIP switch) Quiet
Shift mode, which if selected, maintains
quiet operation during defrost.
Weather-Protective Cabinet The
cabinet is constructed with galvanized,
prepainted steel, providing each unit
with a finish that will last for many
years.
All screws on cabinet exterior are
coated for a long-lasting rust-resistant,
quality appearance.

and is designed for optimum heat

transfer and corrosion protection. The
vertical air discharge carries the sound
and air up and away from adjacent
patio areas and foliage. Coils can be
cleaned with a common garden hose.
External Service Valves Both
service valves are brass, front seating
type. Valves are externally located
so refrigerant tube connections can
be made quickly and easily. Each
valve has a service port for ease of
checking operating refrigerant
pressures. The 38EYX has sweat field
connections.
Sound Hood All sizes have a
compressor sound hood for noise
attenuation.
Safety The design and construction
are in compliance with European
standards to bear the CE Mark.
Operating Range Minimum

* Detailed cooling capacities are based on indoor and outdoor unit at the same elevation per ARI standard 210/240-94. If additional tubing length
and/or indoor unit is located above outdoor unit, a slight variation in capacity may occur.
Total and sensible capacities are net capacities. Blower motor heat has been subtracted.
Sensible capacities shown are based on 27C entering air at the indoor coil. For sensible capacities at other than 27C, deduct 245 kW per 480
L/S of indoor coil air for each degree below 27C, or add 245 kW per 480 L/S of indoor coil air per degree above 27C.
** System kW is total of indoor and outdoor unit kilowatts.

Sensible heat capacity (kw)
1. Gross capacities shown do not include a deduction for evaporator fan motor heat.
2. Contact Carrier for cooling capacities at conditions other than shown in table.
3. Direct interpolation is permissible. Do not extrapolate.
4. SHC is based on 26.7C temperature of air entering the indoor unit. At any other temperature, correct the SHC read from the table of cooling
capacities as follows:
Corrected SHCKW = SHC + [1.23 x 103 x (1-BF) x (Cdb-26.7) x L/s]
Observe the rule of signs. Above 26.7C, SHC correction will be positive; add it to SHC. Below 26.7C, SHC correction will be negative; subtract it
from SHC.
5. Formula:
Cldb = Cedb

SHCkW
1.23 x 10 3 x (L/s)

Leaving wet bulb = wet bulb temperature corresponding to enthalpy of air leaving coil (hlwb).
hlwb = hewb

TCkW
1.20 x 10 3 x (L/s)

Where hewb is enthalpy of air entering evaporator coil (kJ/kg).

Accessory Kits Description Suggested and Required Use

1. Disconnect Kit
The kit is used to disconnect electrical power to the fan coil so service or maintenance may be performed safely.
SUGGESTED USE: All (Consult local code).
2. Downflow Base Kit
This kit is designed to provide a 1-in. minimum clearance between unit discharge plenum, ductwork, and combustible materials. It also provides a gap free
seal with the floor.
REQUIRED USE: This kit can be used whenever fan coils are used in downflow applications and local code requires a metal base for the unit.
3. Downflow Conversion Kit
Fan coils are shipped from the factory for upflow or horizontal-left applications. Downflow conversion kits provide proper condensate water drainage and
support for the coil when used in downflow applications. Separate kits are available for slope coils and A-coils.
REQUIRED USE: This kit must be used whenever fan coils are used in downflow applications.
4. Fan Coil Filter
The kit consists of 12 fan coil framed filters. These filters collect large dust particles from the return air entering the fan coil and prevents them from
collecting on the coil. This process helps to keep the coil clean, which increases heat transfer and in turn the efficiency of the system.
SUGGESTED USE: To replace filters in FX4C fan coils.
5. Condensate Drain Trap Kit
This kit consists of 50 PVC condensate traps. Each trap is pre-formed and ready for field installation. This deep trap helps the system make and hold
proper condensate flow even during blower initiation.
SUGGESTED USE: All FX4C fan coils.
6. Downflow/Horizontal Conversion Gasket Kit
This kit provides the proper gasketing of units when applied in either a Downflow or Horizontal application.

Estimated Fan Sound Power (in decibels 10E-12 watts) is calculated in accordance with procedure described in ASHRAE 1987
HVAC Systems and Applications Handbook, Chapter 52, Sound and Vibration Control, using the Specific Sound Power
Level approach.
ACCURACY:
This is a prediction method, based on an accepted method which has demonstrated satisfactory results in field applications.
However, field test results may generate sound pressure values which differ from these predicted values, as the current state
of the art in determining sound power varies in accuracy from 0.2 db in mid-range (250 to 4000 Hz bands) to 3 to 4 db in 125
and 8000 Hz bands and up to 6 to 8 db in 63 Hz band.
MINOR CHANGES: Use for estimating sound power at other conditions of airflow and external static pressure.
