ULTRA COMPACT MAGNET SYSTEM The Intera 1.5 T features a revolutionary ultra-compact,
actively shielded, superconducting magnet ideally suited to mobile use. The extremely lightweight magnet
has two superconducting coil sets: the inner set produces the main magnetic field and the outer set
reduces the external fringe field of the magnet to a minimum enabling the system to travel at field. Both
coil sets are electrically connected in series for fail-safe operation. A superconducting main field
compensation function corrects for field variations induced by moving objects close to the magnet
allowing maximum flexibility in siting the trailer. High magnetic field homogeneity, achieved through
passive shimming, ensures excellent image quality with a 53 cm field of view. With the patient in the
magnet, this can be further improved by the dynamic FOV shimming technique. The magnet has typical
helium consumption between 0.03 l/hr and 0.1 l/hr, depending upon transportation conditions.
HIGH PERFORMANCE PULSAR GRADIENT STSYEM The Intera Pulsar Pulsar gradient system
offers a gradient amplitude of 33 mT/m with a slew rate of 80 T/m/s for highest temporal resolution and
short scan times. This gradient system is the ideal platform for all imaging needs providing the ultimate in
power and flexibility.
The actively shielded, water-cooled gradient system provides accurate spatial encoding of the MR signals
over the entire 53cm field of view and minimizes eddy currents in the metal shields of the magnet. As a
result, it provides high-resolution imaging and full flexibility in all three gradient axes, both independently
and simultaneously, thus enabling orthogonal, oblique and double oblique imaging.
With a gradient strength of 33 mT/m (each axis: x, y and z), the Pulsar gradient system provides the ideal
platform for all imaging needs. It ensures improved overall image quality by means of short Echo Times
(TE) and echo-spacing, and increased signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). They enable high-resolution imaging
using small fields of view (FOV) and thin slice acquisitions with 100% duty cycle.
The non-resonant, state of the art water-cooled gradient amplifier technology allows flexible generation of
any type of gradient waveform (trapezoids, sinusoids and combinations thereof) for all imaging modes at
maximum slew rates.
SofTone is Philips' unique gradient acoustic noise reduction technology. It reduces gradient noise by
30dB(A) - this is experienced by the patient as a noise reduction of 86%! This allows you to communicate
more easily with patients in true two-way communication.

The system automatically combines the data measured with each individual coil element into one final
image. A dedicated software algorithm optimizes the homogeneity of the images. Two coils can be
connected simultaneously allowing ultimate flexibility in patient set and minimizing scan time for extended
coverage exams.
COMPREHENSIVE COIL SET All Intera RF coils provide signal transfer without degradation: built-in
preamplifiers in all receiver coils and, in all coil elements for Synergy and SENSE coils, ensure that the
received RF signal is immediately boosted to a level that prevents degradation of the SNR. It also
eliminates the need for matching the RF coils prior to a scan. Tuning for all rigid coils is fixed; for all
flexible coils it is fully automated and takes only a few seconds. Dedicated preset procedures are
available for all coils.
The following coils are included in the system:
Quadrature Body Coil.
Quadrature Head Coil.
Synergy Head/Neck Coil
SENSE Body Coil

ScanTools ScanTools is the clinical imaging package, which provides versatile and extensive imaging
capabilities, embedded in an easy and flexible user interface. ScanTools includes five clinical packages
of optimized sequences and protocols for Neuro, Ortho, Body, Angio, and Cardiac, as well as patient
administration, acquisition, viewing, processing, connectivity, data storage and hardcopy functionality.
User Interface Intera systems are designed for maximal patient throughput. This is demonstrated by
the extremely fast scan definition capability, supported by anatomically oriented present procedures for all
imaging sequences, in combination with an easy to use graphical user interface. The MR parameter sets
of the preset procedures have been carefully established and clinically tested to achieve optimal image
quality in the shortest time. All parameters can be changed in fine increments, thus providing high
flexibility in the parameter space.

AutoSurvey accelerates setup procedure and streamlines examinations.

AutoView gives a snapshot view of the images as they are reconstructed.
FreeStyle PlanScan provides fast, easy and accurate setup of new scans. It allows graphical
definition for a new scan on orthogonal views for 3D.
ScanList: pre-planning of multiple scans can be automatically performed, thus enhancing
throughput and saving operator time.
RepeatScan enables copying of all examination parameters from any previous scan to a new
acquisition
TimeSave increases patient throughput by automatic reduction and skipping of preparation
phases.
The InfoPage shows an extensive list of resulting scan parameters including relative signal
level, voxel size, and bandwidth.

Imaging Techniques ScanTools provides a wide array of imaging techniques to facilitate all MR
studies.

Single Slice, Multiple Single Slice, Multiple Slice, and 3D volume acquisitions with matrix
sizes up to 1024x1024 (freely selectable). Slices of a scan can be divided over multiple
stacks, each with its won orientation, angulations, and number of slices.
The 3D k-space shutter provides a reduction in scan time of about 25% without significantly
affecting the SNR.
Multi-chunk 3D divides the 3D volume into several sub-volumes or chunks, which are
acquired in an optimized timing sequence. In MRA, this feature (MOTSA) allows the
acquisition of multiple thin 3D volumes to combine the advantages of both 3D and 2D inflow
techniques providing an increased signal intensity of slowly flowing blood. Multistack 3D
allows acquisition of multiple, freely positionable 3D stacks.
Spin Echo (SE) and Modified Spin Echo (MSE) with DAVE (Dual Asymmetric Variable Echo)
to optimize contrast in both echoes independently in a multiple echo scan.
Inversion Recovery techniques with flexible inversion times for general T1, T2 and proton
density-weighted contrast as well as STIR, providing fat suppressed images.
Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) is an Inversion Recovery method in which the
Inversion Time is chosen in such a way that the signals of fluids (water, CSF) is zero. The
method is available in SE and TSE mode and in both T1- and T2 weighting.
Fast Field Echo and T1 and T2 enhances FFE with spoiling techniques.
Balanced FFE provides good T2- weighted contrast between fluids with a long T2 (like blood
or CSF) and surrounding tissues with a shorter T2.
Turbo Field Echo (TFE) provides a short acquisition time in gradient echo imaging. Flip angle
sweep results in improved SNR and better contrast. Prior to each slice, a user-selected
prepulse can be applied with a user-defined delay time for contrast manipulation. TFE can
be used for motion-free abdominal imaging or to record contrast media wash-in and washout.

Dynamic imaging in combination with all imaging methods. Easy set up by time or scans.
Turbo Spin Echo (TSE) provides a considerable reduction in acquisition times in T1, PD and
T2 weighted imaging, while greater T2 weighting can also be obtained. Applications are in
neuro, orthopedic and abdominal areas. Multislice Multi-echo TSE allows acquisition of up to
32 echoes per slice. Turbo Spin Echo is expanded with single shot TSE, allowing Turbofactors of up to 256, thus improving spatial coverage and image quality as well as speeding
up acquisions. Dual Inversion Recovery with two inversion pulses can be used for
suppression of three tissues. This allows, for example, white matter only imaging or gray
matter only imaging.
Turbo-Sense combines the strength of an ultra-fast imaging method (TSE) and a
revolutionary scan acceleration technique (SENSE), improving imaging speed and/or quality
in all applications. Scan times are dramatically shortened by using signal from individual
channels of a phased-array coil. Turbo-Sense also improves quality in single shot studies,
and allows higher resolution studies in the same scan time.
Echo Planar Imaging (EPI) for ultra fast acquisitions. Single and Multi shot EPI is available in
FFE-EPI, SE-EPI and IR-EPI. EPI can be applied in both single and multiple slice mode in
any orientation.
The combination with prepulses for contrast manipulation and aft
suppression enhances the diagnostic range.
Magnetization Transfer Contrast (MTC) is an important mechanism for the manipulation of
image contrast in tissues of the brain, liver, or muscles. Applications provide increased
contrast of vessels versus background tissue in MRA images or contrast manipulation to
enhance lesion conspicuity in neuro imaging or cartilage highlighting in musculoskeletal
imaging. Selection of on- and off-resonance MT effects depending on area of interest.
Combinable with all imaging techniques.
SPIR (Spectral Pre-saturation with Inversion Recovery) yields fat suppressed imagines.
Dual Inversion Recovery with two inversion pulses for suppression of two tissues, resulting in
e.g. white matter or gray matter only imaging (white matter only imaging by suppression of
both gray matter and CSF gray matter only imaging by suppression of both white matter and
CSF).
Contrast enhanced MRA studies can be performed with 2D and 3D FFE and TFE techniques
with short TE and TR.
Inflow is an MR Angiography techniques using FFE or TFE techniques in combination with
traveling REST slabs for vessel selection, flow compensation to avoid phase dispersion, and
partial echo. RF spoiling provides optimal background suppression. Short TEs (well below
4 ms) for reduced flow artifact. Advanced Gated Inflow is a combination of cardiac gating
and the inflow technique, to suppress artifacts from retrograde flow and pulsations. Dual
gated inflow is a combination of cardiac gating and the inflow technique, to suppress artifacts
from retrograde flow and pulsations. Dual gated inflow acquisitions to combine systolic and
diastolic information into one scan.
Tilted Optimized Non-Saturated Excitation (TONE) reduces downstream saturation of
inflowing blood in 3D acquired MRA scans. In TONE the excitation flip angle varies linearly
over the excited chunk. It improves the visualization of distal vessels in 3D.
Phase Contrast Angiography (PCA), 2D and 3D, for depiction of the smallest vessels without
any background signal, PCA achieves complete suppression of stationary tissues permitting
depiction of very small vessels containing slowly flowing blood. Retrospective Gated 2D PCA
(cine) allows 2D PCA multi-phase acquisitions for blood or CSF flow evaluation. Advanced
Gated Phase Contrast Angiography is available to suppress artifacts from retrograde flow
and pulsation.
SofTone controls and substantially reduces the gradient acoustic noise. SofTone uses a
combination of hardware and software to realize acoustic noise reductions of up to 30dB.

performs an automatic coil sensitivity based uniformity correction.
Selectable fat shift direction for minimization of susceptibility and fax artifacts.
Flow-Adjusted Gradient (FLAG) waveforms, flow compensation, provide effective
suppression of artifacts induced by blood or CSF flow.
REST (Regional Saturation) to suppress artifacts due to e.g. inflowing blood, or peristaltic
motion by RF saturation. The REST slabs can be chosen parallel, perpendicular, or freely
positioned in relation to the imaged planes and can be double-angulated.
Shared REST improves inflow suppression in gradient echo sequences.
Fold over Suppression enables imaging without back-folding of the anatomic areas outside
the field of view. This results in artifact reduction without increasing the scan time.
Peripheral Pulse triggering to reduce artifacts caused by blood or CSF pulsations.
Respiratory Triggering to synchronize acquisitions with the patients respiratory cycle.
PEAR (Phased Encoded Artifact Reduction) to reduce artifacts from respiratory motion
without increasing scan-time.
SMART averaging to reduce artifacts from respiratory motion.
Manual-start for use in breath hold acquisitions and dynamic studies controlled from panel on
magnet housing, or operators console.

Viewing and Processing An extensive range of image viewing and processing functions are available
which enhance the diagnostic capabilities and patient throughput. All these functions can be performed in
parallel and with direct mouse actions:

Window width/level, zoom, pan, rotate, mirror for easier viewing of the results.
Image annotation with text, arrows, and lines.
Image Arithmetic: addition and subtraction of any scan or dynamic.
Distance and angle measurements, profile or histogram display and X-Y coordinate
calculation.
Regions of Interest (ROI) are used in various processing functions. ROIs can have square,
rectangular, circular, elliptical or irregular shapes. The ROI area, volume, mean, and
standard deviation values can be displayed.
Time Intensity Diagram: Enables analysis of time-dependent behavior of tissue after
administration of a contrast agent. Regions can be defined for generation of intensity curves
as a function of time.

imagines such as MIPs, contrast agent perfusion or cardiac multiphase image series.
Interactive Real-Time MPR (Multi-Planar Reformatting) function allows interactive planning of
reformatted stacks for post-examination optimization of the presentation of the diagnostic
information.
Interactive Real Time MIP (Maximum/Minimum Intensity Projection) produces MR
Angiography, Myelography and MRCP images. Interactive manipulation of orientation and
angulation provides a direct feedback of the projection.
PicturePlus improves image quality through noise smoothing and edge enhancement.

1024 MB Reconstruction Memory The 1024 Mbyte reconstructed memory option consists of an
additional 1024 Mbyte memory module for the reconstruction and a software key to enable the use of the
module. The additional memory provides significantly improved reconstruction speed for large data sets,
e.g. resulting from Mobi-Trak or Presto examinations, or when synergy coils are used.
Bolustrak MR Angiography is the fastest growing application in MR. Gyroscan Intera advances
contrast enhanced MRA even further with an innovative package called BolusTrak. With BolusTrak, the
